Tarawera Ultramarathon 100 miler/165.2km with 5,470m elevation gain
Rotorua, New Zealand - 13/14 February 2021
A little insight into the high and lows of my first 100 miler including all 15 aid stations. Unfortunately, footage captured in the latter part is greatly reduced and I think you’ll appreciate why.
Finishing stats: 32:35:05 | 96th out of 152 finishers | 42 DNF and 29 DNS
The pounamu/greenstone is unique to southern New Zealand and its carvings are important in Māori culture. The toki is associated with great mana (strength), power and honour. This particular toki blade is a symbol of strength and courage.
The race includes running along eight different lakes, the solitude of the Tarawera Forest, a boat ride across Lake Rotomahana, the waterfalls on the Tarawera Falls track, twists and turns on the Eastern Okataina track, running through the archaeological site of Buried Village, the towering redwoods, steam alongside the trail at Sulphur Point and finishing at the Lakefront Reserve in downtown Rotorua.
