I remember a few years ago when cities started to just stop prosecuting thefts like these, and people laughed when others said that the stores will eventually leave if they see enough theft. Well it's happening, and now those same people who laughed are freaking out that their local grocery store is shutting down. This in NYC is not an isolated incident. Portland, San Francisco, other major cities who voted and chose this path are facing similar issues.

If you do not hold these thieves accountable, they will move from business to business taking and stealing. As one business closes, they will go to the next business and so on and so forth until there will not be any businesses open. I have lived through the 70s,80s,90s and early 2000s and never saw this type of foolishness and never saw accountability and responsibility this low in our society. This is unbelievable !!!

First of all, Target is opening 6 new stores in NYC soon, according to their web site. One of them is in Harlem, the same neighborhood as this store that is closing. Business Insider also wrote an article showing that other Targets in NYC have higher shoplifting rates, yet they're not being closed. This is propaganda. NYC crime is much lower than it was in the early 2000s, 90s, 80s, and 70s.

You are right, of course, but WILL "holding them accountable" change anything?. The Laws have always relied on the Social Contract, when you and I were young, everyone UNDERSTOOD, even the thieves, that it is wrong to steal each others stuff. They FELT guilt, you could MAKE them feel accountable. However, the culture itself has changed to the point that the music, TV, movies, Public Discourse, everything, is twisted. People commit SERIOUS crimes and immediately start talking nonsense . . . and not because THEY thought up the nonsense, they absorb it in all the "sub-culture" films and music and TV. You CAN'T hold someone to account if their mental geography interprets everything you do as directed against them with prejudice. The sort of people who shoplift, do NOT consider the rest of society has the right to stop them anymore. You CAN'T hold them to account because they don't think they are doing wrong, because of the (sub) culture that permeates their lives. It is made perfectly clear in the associated (sub) culture of "Graffiti", they have just declared their damaging public property, and other peoples property, is "Art". And will literally scream in your face that you are denying them their "right" to practice their "art" and actually feel aggrieved WITH YOU when you call the police, or clean their damage away from your home. They can NOT be "held to account" because they have a different story dominating their heads.

The powers are LETTING it happen, so that we the people are willing to have to have their smart phone scanned (and eventually their hands or forehead) to even get into the store. They will say identification of customers and automatic digital payment is the only way to prevent the very theft that they brought about by the intentionally overly lenient policies.

I used to work at target within their loss prevention department. Insurance does not cover theft/shrinkage and a lot of products at target are IOU’s from vendors. So basically the vendor pays target to stock and Target pays the vendor from the sale. If items get stolen before it’s sold, Target owes the vendor the full amount.

This is all by design to help push for online shopping that these companies are dumping money into, to decrease retailers overhead cost, reduce workforce, reduced shrinkage, tracking products to each individuals, collecting/selling more data, etc. The writing was on the wall when they allowed for the minimum wage to be increased. I'm a former New Yorker now living in Albuquerque, and the Walmart here also closed one of their stores due to theft. The interesting thing is that Walmart store closing was in an area also considered under served. Theft causing closing of stores, particularly in major cities, has become a national problem. The short-term thinking of thieves are destroying neighborhoods.

I suggest looking further into it, any time a corporation tells you something, assume they're lying. They care about profits, period. So if their stores aren't doing well sales wise, are they going to admit that to the stockholders, the board members and the public at large? Of course not. Truth is, Target isn't doing well for a lot of reasons. I go into this target in Manhattan and the one in the Bronx regularly, and they are almost always empty. Why aren't malls dying being blamed on "theft"? Amazon is killing traditional brick and mortar stores and Target is looking for a scapegoat that exonerates them of any problems. Was Blockbuster also closing and going bankrupt because of theft? Or was there something deeper at play there? Think about it.

its not being taken more seriously because that is exactly what the people in these states (in this example, NY), voted for. Same thing in california. They decriminalized drugs, and for a while all the druggies and hippies loved it. Now you watch a townhall and you see everyone begging for more police , begging to take drugs away. Begging for their lives. people are getting murdered , od , raped, left to rot. You give people "more freedom" there will always be some people that abuse the shit out of it. I hope all this makes people realize how necessary law enforcement and strict enforcement is for our country. if you live in one of these places get out and get to a sanctuary state somewhere in the south like florida or texas. You can live in a major democratic run city which is still 10x better run then new york, cali, illinois, etc.

a few days ago i was having a conversation with someone who has the mindset that "if i see someone stealing, no i didn't" we were talking about essentials, baby food, diapers, toilet paper etc. She believed it didn't matter, that the company makes millions, so these $20 items don't matter. I tried explaining that it may not hurt the company as a whole, but it hurts the local stores and employees. If a store isn't making plan, they cut hours, they start cutting hours for the part timers first, so someone who works 20-30 hours a week could now only be working 10-20 which is money they likely need. They start getting rid of positions, they do what they can to bring in profit to keep the store running. All she took from that was "they're punishing employees for things out of their control" and it just makes me so sad knowing she was so desperately trying to justify and run around from the fact that theft is hurting the local employees. Target closing is a direct result of the "i didnt see anything" mindset.

However, there is encouraging news - for the first time since the pandemic, retail theft has begun to decline in Manhattan. Year to date, petit larcenies are down 8 percent and robberies are down 5 percent, and comparing the first quarter of 2023 to 2022, retail theft complaints are down 11 percent. While we have more work to do, we believe our partnership with the NYPD and mayor's office, and 5-point plan developed with the Small Business Alliance, is beginning to turn the tide.” I also wouldn't blame them for not prosecuting theft. Our jail systems are almost completely full and there is already limited space for violent offenders.

I saw the same kind of problem in San Francisco downtown, where shops are closing down because of the theft. One of the reasons why it happened was they made the law saying that less than $900 of shop lifting is not charged as a serious crime in California. The reason top executives are not demanding punishment and prosecution of criminals is because each of these top executives have what's known as a 'golden parachute retirement package' which means as long as the top executives do not break the law they will receive enough money to easily retire and even allow their children to easily retire. This means even if the company files for bankruptcy and completely closes all doors those top executives still receive their 'golden parachute retirement package'.... the top executives have no reason to save these big companies from collapsing.
