I worked at what was a major well known department store back in the late 70s. Nothing has changed. Prices would be increased about a month before Black Friday, then the “sale” prices would kick in. Those sale prices were regular retail before the temporary increase. Difference is we didn’t have the internet to price check, we had the big printed flyers in newspapers for black Friday and the holiday season. I don’t miss working retail one little bit! But it taught me a lot of lessons. Like, don’t shop these big sales, whether in-store or online. Do your homework on things you need and on your holiday shopping list.

It’s always been a good idea to watch prices and have a target in mind; then you’ll know if a price is really a deal. In my case, prices on everything I was considering dropped a week in advance, so my Black Friday shopping was done by the Saturday before… and none of them ever went lower. Is it me, or does it feel like entitlement to outright expect or demand an extra discount on Black Friday?

FYI, if you ever shop at stores advertising a liquidation sale, wait until the sale is at least 50-70% to buy anything as that's usually the threshold where you're actually getting a deal from the usual store prices. How you ask? That's a good question; any store going out of business or liquidating products, removes all sales and discounts on the items and sets the price at actual MSRP. So if the store typically sells a $100 MSRP item for $80 and then has sales on the item regularly for $60, the store eliminates all of that and then the liquidation sale starts at a 25% discount on everything. That item you used to get for $60 is now "on sale" for $75. Do people fall for it? All the time. I worked for a company that closed a store and hired a liquidation firm to help. The store we closed did the equivalent of 3 months of sales/profit in 1 weekend. The liquidation lasted 2 months and only the final week were things actually discounted.

Same with Amazon. I watched the prices of gifts. After all the hype of Black Friday and cyber Monday ended. The prices are the exact same. I feel like Black Friday hasn't really actually been good for a long time. They just bloat the price a few weeks before and then cut it and then after Black Friday it's a "christmas sale". As some one who worked for target for the better part of a decade it has to do with how the computer processes ads. That week there's 3 ads the pre, the black Friday, and the post with the weekly ads usually rotating sunday/Monday. The reason the second sign is there is in the event a black Friday doorbuster doesn't sell out it carries onto the sat ad, which you'd see if they showed the bottom left corner with the effective signage date. Usually there is other stuff added for that ad along the lines of buy so much get a gift card for so much cause they're not sure what will be left over and still wanna have a sale. New ad, new signs. Girl making the video is just doesn't show that part, not saying right or wrong but when I worked there we usually did exactly this cause it's easier to pull all the black signs from the front than to swap them, making for faster turnover. And when you set 3 ads in 4 days ya do what ya gotta do.
@mattcoldiron58697 ай бұрын
And for anyone saying it's fraudulent technically it's not it's just a processing quirk. The real problem yall should have is the fact that the doorbuster are generally specially ordered products with lower specs. Everybody loves the idea of owning a 70 inch TV and forgets to look at the fact that it's 1080p instead of 4k or that it's made by a brand with quality control issues. Honestly there's a reason all that stuff is cheap

We get home and I’m telling my husband that I suspected they raised the price for this so called sale bc the ones I bought at the first shoe store were “$28”. Long story short at home I realize it’s a new sticker covering the original price so I take it off and there it is. It’s original price of $22 😄 they raised the price to $28 and the others half off but if you do the math you are paying still paying $22 😂 so you aren’t getting anything half off you are just getting “tricked” to buy two instead of one.

If it has been on sale that whole time, it wouldn't be a black friday deal. Wouldn't it?

And now they will make it mandatory policy to remove all other promotional signs before placing any exclusive sales prices. That way in their minds what consumer doesn't know, won't hurt them. They think most retail shoppers are stupid.

Yeah this is going on for probably since Black Friday ever started. When I worked in retail like that our lowest prices were actually during the summer when everybody was on vacation. It's just a marketing scheme that's it. Everybody during the summer doesn't think about buying TVs or baseball bats or gloves or ProForm treadmills. Or ellipticals. They think it's the holiday when they're cheapest. So funny

A practical approach is to buy when you need, so called deals happen all through the year. For e.g every product in Costco is on sale at least 4 times a year.
@elecaire90947 ай бұрын
That's just like Kohl's where they have the lowest prices of the season 78 times a year

My mother worked at Kmart in the 70s. They use to put their crockpots in the sale paper. They were not on sale but they would sell out. In Kmart case they never said it was a sale, people thought it was on sale because it was in the sale paper. My mother said they didn't sell many crackpots when they were not in the sale paper.

Actually saw prices change on Amazon for specific items I was looking at, lots of small items dropping $5-10 bucks, but bought altogether there was a decent discount.

Even playstation did this on their store. "Black friday" deals popped up that were literally the same price that they were a month ago.

Did the same thing at footlocker just add in some other stuff that was selling from the store room. That's why its always best to price watch a few months before black Friday.

The stores usually raise prices before a big sale, then sell the items at regular price the day of the sale.
@creativeexpletives7 ай бұрын
Not a new thing, it happens every year but I'm sure people are this stupid not to realise it. To get a deal, you keep tracking the price several months in advance and then pull the trigger on BF, only if you're really getting a deal.

Historically, many "deals" for black friday weren't really great in the first place. Now, they just offer them earlier to offset the annoying rush so that we don't have as many traffic jams and people trampling over each other, ironically, right after Thanksgiving. Personally, the realization that our country has been dumb over consumerism is a good thing. It's how the middle class keeps itself mid.

Best Buy keeps extending the Sale date. And they show the original price more than double of the Sale price. It was last year's TV model, and the original price was never that much.

Grocery stores do it too. They have a everyday price that has margins way higher than normal, then the "sale" price is their normal margin price.

I peeped this too everywhere. I noticed the price change was less than $5 on most items if that. They think they’re slick but it’s obvious we all notice the math ain’t mathing. Hopefully price sales stats drop far enough for stores to see that we’re catching on.

I have worked at target. The sales signs begind the black friday deals are for the day after black friday in case of any of that same product in stock. Its easier for the floor managers to just take the sign off and provides more time in other areas of the store. I cant speak for other stores though but think smarter not harder!

Having worked for several "box stores" they all do this, or the other tactic is to slowly make items up during the year so it and then mark it down to Black Friday at the original price.
