The theme of this episode is our cast having to step out of their comfort zone. It starts in a minor way with Picard needing to give the kids a tour and Geordie being reluctant to sing. When the disaster hits, Troi takes command. Riker is forced to solve the engineering problem while Data is disabled. Worf delivers the baby. Picard rescues the kids. Even Beverly and Geordie are primarily faced with physical challenges. The episode does a good job of weaving that central theme throughout the narrative.

What I like about the episode is that they brought almost all of the characters in situations, where their strengths and abilities were not very helpful, and they all had to overcome not only the challenges of their surroundings, but also their own inner challenges: Worf, the great warrior, delivering a baby. Picard, who was awkward with children and used to have crew to command for along time suddenly being on his own with three children. Troi, who never had any commanding experience suddenly being in charge - and so on. It was awesome, because every single one of them had to go through some character growth to manage the new situations.

The Cosmic String is a nice callback; Troi knows that one, obviously, so she tries to use it as a reference. 😄It's nice that rather than make her completely clueless they did show her trying to make logical deductions based on prior experience. These questions of rank Vs role, and how the chain of command isn't as simple as it might appear, are fun; inevitable, I suppose, in an organization as complex and multi-faceted as Starfleet.
@MrJerks934 күн бұрын
Right. The Duty officer is in charge until relieved. With her passing, it falls to rank and whomever can assume command. She's not really a line officer, but Star Trek has a long history of having non-Command division (e.g., Mr. Spock, Scotty, and Data) assume command.

I really like these kinda "starship down" episodes. Where the characters are on the ship, but have to go through sections of it we've never seen, or find ways to deal with the ship not being controllable. Or even just seeing the ship in a state we're not used to, or characters having to take on roles they're not used to. O'Brien is such a pro, though. He's the most experienced, most capable person on the bridge who absolutely SHOULD be in command. But he's just totally by the book, acknowledges who's in charge, gives his recommendations and gets on with his job without an ego. Despite being worried about his wife and no doubt thinking about that every second of the episode. Good guy O'Brien.

To be fair with the decompression of the cargo bay, even them having them hold on so tightly is overblown. Unless they were near the airlock, where there was a significant pressure differential on one side compared to the other, they would mostly just experience a rapid decrease in pressure (Not that this in of itself couldn't cause issues).

If you'll recall going all the way back to Encounter at Farpoint the series premiere, Councillor Troi was wearing the blue and black uniform skant (skirt) and it had her rank of two and a half pips of Lieutenant Commander. It was the only time up until now that she wore a standard uniform before first wearing that deep grey denim outfit for the rest of season one and then the unitard outfits since season two with the occasional blue dress on the bridge. Just like her, Doctor Crusher has a command rank as well and her's is full Commander. If you'll recall in Suddenly Human Jono (Jeremiah Rossa) asked Worf after Crusher ordered Jono to be confined until further notice why he took orders from a female. Worf replied, "she is my superior officer." Jono then says in his culture a woman can't command a man. Which Worf added, "you are human and as human, women can be anything a man can." Troi's a Lt Commander officer, but a non-line officer, which means an officer who isn't usually eligible for command. Normally only line officers would take command, even if a non-line officer outranks them, but in a situation where there aren't any line officers left, it then falls to non-line officers like her. Not to mention Geordi’s comment was wrong. The air would not be “sucked” from the cargo bay into space, it would be blown (an area of higher pressure into one with no pressure). It’s called explosive decompression for a reason. But it’s a common TV/Movie mistake troupe as well. On a similar vein, Dr. Crusher’s medical recommendation to Geordi is grossly inaccurate as well. They would want to exhale all the air from their lungs prior to all the air evacuating as the pressure difference would cause the air in your lungs to rapidly expand causing severe internal damage and would be extremely hazardous if not fatal. A delightful entertaining episode none the less.

Beverly and Geordi would not have been dessicated instantly. Also, of course they start to move before the doors close: They were only waiting for all the air to escape and the wind to die down, so they could let go of the ladder. When that happened, Geordi hit the button to put up the force field; the doors _could stay fully open at that point,_ and it would make no difference. If anything, the implausible part about that scene is that Geordi - an engineering genius - couldn't program the console to repressurize the deck, instead of having to press a button on another console.

@@ErikStronks Those are two very different scenarios. What Data and Riker needed to accomplish was to collate information and control multiple different systems, for which you would definitely need the Main Computer. Geordi, by contrast, was faced with two functioning consoles, each demonstrably capable of carrying out at least one specific task at the press of a button. As the most qualified engineer aboard (and possibly in the fleet), there would be hundreds of different ways he could get one console's buttons to activate the other console's buttons, instead of risking it all on being able to make it across the room in a vacuum. Even a _mechanical_ solution would be preferable. In fact, the very idea that Geordi could get locked in a room on the Enterprise (at least, without someone equally skilled intentionally keeping him in there) is ridiculous; but drama is drama, so I won't push it _that_ far.

Troi was there when the Ansata planted a bomb on the warp core in “The High Ground” and when the warp core of the Yamato destabilised in “Contagion” so I’d think anything going wrong with the warp core would be fairly obvious how serious it was without being told.

With the air pressure being normal, opening the hanger bay door wouldn’t just blow them into space. It would feel like a large gust of wind.. but the cargo bay would have to be under A LOT of pressure to lift an adult off their feet. And since the gravity is still on in the room, they wouldn’t have to hold on to anything.

This was the first episode of Trek I ever saw, and I think the only first-run of TNG. What makes it one of my favorites is that it's one of the few times that Trek focuses on the actual dangers of space travel itself.

In the Navy (or space fleet) the officers are divided into command officers and staff officers. A staff officer (doctor, counselor, specialist) would never be in command of a ship. Even if they were higher ranking.

In defense of Keiko’s pregnancy, we hadn’t seen her since the previous season so by the time the pregnancy was revealed in series “real time” it wasn’t that hard to accept.

While not explicitly spelled out (as far as I remember), Dr Crusher as the Chief Medical Officer on board the Enterprise held the rank of Commander, she periodically acts as OOD (Officer of the Deck) on the night shift but remains outside the normal command hierarchy at other times.

I'm JUST old enough to remember quite a few "disaster" movies in the late 70s, very similar premise, always interesting with all the different groups and their challenges.

I just wanna say I love the Beverly and Geordy stuff 'cause both of them are actually pretty nice and polite characters and while in the other groups there's this thread of leadership going through you can't point out any of the two to be "the leader" per se. They are probably not paired together often and I like that they did portrait this ... not awkwardness but politeness within the confines of a larger group you know what I'm saying?... Like in a large friend group there's always one where - outside of this group - you wouldn't really hang with that guy youknow. They didn't overplay it. They didn't underplay it, which I figure is not that easy to hit that chemistry. Two wonderful actors. Plus as a kid Geordy was my favorite and ... well everybody was in love with Beverly come on!...

Love this episode! Everyone gets a chance to shine--and those who have had lots of times to shine in the past even get to shine in new and interesting ways. I love how far Picard has come with dealing with children, and the reminder that Troi is a lieutenant commander. When was the last time we saw Troi in uniform, the pilot? That's probably the only time her pins were visible.

4:50 Think back to the pilot episode of TNG. Troi wore a variation of a Starfleet uniform with rank insignia on the collar. For some reason when the show went into production Gene Roddenberry decided she should wear something other than a uniform in character as Troi, but it was never really explained why.
@Markus117d5 күн бұрын
I think it's kinda obvious, imagine your a crew person or very junior officer, how would you feel confiding your innermost thoughts & feelings and talking about your problems to a senior officer in uniform? Rather than a more comfortable off duty informal setting?
@peterkoester73585 күн бұрын
@@Markus117d not sure how true that would be considering every other ship's counselor wears a uniform and - of course - the Jellico Rule. 🤐
@Markus117d5 күн бұрын
@peterkoester7358 Ahh, but how many other councillors do we see during the same time frame, becides Troi could have asked & granted permission to be more informally dressed.. Not saying it's the reason, but it certainly makes some sense. Well at least to me it does, lol..

I know we're not supposed to ponder "artificial gravity" too much in Trek (and indeed in most sci-fi opera)... but exactly where is that lift falling to? The "bottom" of the ship? 😂
@jonathandonley32995 күн бұрын
I guess it depends on where the turbolift was at the time. If it was in the primary hull, the bottom would be deck 16. If is was in the engineering section, then that would have been a much longer fall. Still, a 10 to 12 story fall would have been extremely hazardous, if not deadly.
@Musicita5 күн бұрын
I always wonder that when I see this episode and my only explanation is that for some reason the gravity plating affects the entire shaft and isn’t built into the turbo lift itself.
@silikon25 күн бұрын
@@Musicita I would have thought there's no gravity in the tubes at all because they would be pointlessly fighting it. It would have been a good spot for a dab of technobabble, like "the lift's accelerator thinger is jammed at full power". That even strikes me as pretty reasonable technobabble.
