What I love about this episode is that it wouldn't work nearly as well if it wasn't several seasons in, and once you've got a handle on all the characters. It makes seeing them knocked out of their comfort zones and persevering against their different obstacles all the more fun. It's a testament to how well-written they all are - including Ro and it's only her second appearance! - and rewarding for the fans who've stuck with the show to this point. A-Tier for me.

What I always appreciated about the predicament of this episode, was that when the ship hit the filament, everybody was out of their normal work place. Troi in command, O'Brien on the Bridge, Picard in the turbolift, Geordy and Beverly in the cargo bay, Wolf in Ten-Forward, Data and Riker crawling through the Jeffries tubes. Everyone was put in a situation where they would never be normally and made to handle it. The idea is a great one, and everyone executed it in a brilliant fashion.

As someone who grew up seeing the 1970s disaster flicks produced by Irwin Allen (Towering Inferno, Poseidon Adventure, Earthquake) in their first release, this is one of my favorite TNG eps that is just a fun romp. It does a great job of hitting all the disaster film tropes-unlikely people pairing up to survive, the pregnant woman goes into early labor, solve one problem only for another to arise, then the happy ending with smiles all around.

The theme of this episode is our cast having to step out of their comfort zone. It starts in a minor way with Picard needing to give the kids a tour and Geordie being reluctant to sing. When the disaster hits, Troi takes command. Riker is forced to solve the engineering problem while Data is disabled. Worf delivers the baby. Picard rescues the kids. Even Beverly and Geordie are primarily faced with physical challenges. The episode does a good job of weaving that central theme throughout the narrative.

What I like about the episode is that they brought almost all of the characters in situations, where their strengths and abilities were not very helpful, and they all had to overcome not only the challenges of their surroundings, but also their own inner challenges: Worf, the great warrior, delivering a baby. Picard, who was awkward with children and used to have crew to command for along time suddenly being on his own with three children. Troi, who never had any commanding experience suddenly being in charge - and so on. It was awesome, because every single one of them had to go through some character growth to manage the new situations.

The Cosmic String is a nice callback; Troi knows that one, obviously, so she tries to use it as a reference. 😄It's nice that rather than make her completely clueless they did show her trying to make logical deductions based on prior experience. These questions of rank Vs role, and how the chain of command isn't as simple as it might appear, are fun; inevitable, I suppose, in an organization as complex and multi-faceted as Starfleet.
@MrJerks93
@MrJerks93 4 күн бұрын
Right. The Duty officer is in charge until relieved. With her passing, it falls to rank and whomever can assume command. She's not really a line officer, but Star Trek has a long history of having non-Command division (e.g., Mr. Spock, Scotty, and Data) assume command.

38:35 The entire reason Keiko was the pregnant woman trapped in 10-Forward was precisely so it would be a character the audience would connect with! If it were some random crew member no one had ever seen before, the audience would not have cared whether she lived or died or what would happen to the baby. It had to be Keiko - unless you wanted Guinan trying to explain why she was suddenly pregnant!

I really like these kinda "starship down" episodes. Where the characters are on the ship, but have to go through sections of it we've never seen, or find ways to deal with the ship not being controllable. Or even just seeing the ship in a state we're not used to, or characters having to take on roles they're not used to. O'Brien is such a pro, though. He's the most experienced, most capable person on the bridge who absolutely SHOULD be in command. But he's just totally by the book, acknowledges who's in charge, gives his recommendations and gets on with his job without an ego. Despite being worried about his wife and no doubt thinking about that every second of the episode. Good guy O'Brien.

To be fair with the decompression of the cargo bay, even them having them hold on so tightly is overblown. Unless they were near the airlock, where there was a significant pressure differential on one side compared to the other, they would mostly just experience a rapid decrease in pressure (Not that this in of itself couldn't cause issues).

If you'll recall going all the way back to Encounter at Farpoint the series premiere, Councillor Troi was wearing the blue and black uniform skant (skirt) and it had her rank of two and a half pips of Lieutenant Commander. It was the only time up until now that she wore a standard uniform before first wearing that deep grey denim outfit for the rest of season one and then the unitard outfits since season two with the occasional blue dress on the bridge. Just like her, Doctor Crusher has a command rank as well and her's is full Commander. If you'll recall in Suddenly Human Jono (Jeremiah Rossa) asked Worf after Crusher ordered Jono to be confined until further notice why he took orders from a female. Worf replied, "she is my superior officer." Jono then says in his culture a woman can't command a man. Which Worf added, "you are human and as human, women can be anything a man can." Also is the school song The Laughing Vulcan and his dog based on Sybok? 😂

Troi's a Lt Commander officer, but a non-line officer, which means an officer who isn't usually eligible for command. Normally only line officers would take command, even if a non-line officer outranks them, but in a situation where there aren't any line officers left, it then falls to non-line officers like her. We have to assume that for some reason Ro isn't line, although normally her position would be. Might have been disqualified as a result of the court martial.

"You have the bridge Number One" etc. That didn't happen when the officer on duty got blown up. It's probably normal for the highest ranking officer to assume command. Avoiding spoilers, Troi seems to go out of her way to not be seen as an officer, but she is one, she's mentioned attending the academy (although what she did there is questionable) and she significantly outranks Ro. She could have given command to Ro, and probably would have if she didn't have such a snotty and callous attitude. I really liked that the episode didn't exaggerate the scene of the air being blown out too drastically. They did a little, but empty space doesn't have sucking power. It's just empty. There's a initial swoosh as the air evacuates, then you have no air. It's even a push that the barrels would be blown out, considering how heavy they were. People being pulled horizontally would just be Hollywood craziness. I do agree, though that it was a vignette that needed more tension.

Not to mention Geordi’s comment was wrong. The air would not be “sucked” from the cargo bay into space, it would be blown (an area of higher pressure into one with no pressure). It’s called explosive decompression for a reason. But it’s a common TV/Movie mistake troupe as well. On a similar vein, Dr. Crusher’s medical recommendation to Geordi is grossly inaccurate as well. They would want to exhale all the air from their lungs prior to all the air evacuating as the pressure difference would cause the air in your lungs to rapidly expand causing severe internal damage and would be extremely hazardous if not fatal. A delightful entertaining episode none the less.

Beverly and Geordi would not have been dessicated instantly. Also, of course they start to move before the doors close: They were only waiting for all the air to escape and the wind to die down, so they could let go of the ladder. When that happened, Geordi hit the button to put up the force field; the doors _could stay fully open at that point,_ and it would make no difference. If anything, the implausible part about that scene is that Geordi - an engineering genius - couldn't program the console to repressurize the deck, instead of having to press a button on another console.

@@ErikStronks Those are two very different scenarios. What Data and Riker needed to accomplish was to collate information and control multiple different systems, for which you would definitely need the Main Computer. As the most qualified engineer aboard (and possibly in the fleet), there would be hundreds of different ways he could get one console's buttons to activate the other console's buttons, instead of risking it all on being able to make it across the room in a vacuum. Even a _mechanical_ solution would be preferable. In fact, the very idea that Geordi could get locked in a room on the Enterprise (at least, without someone equally skilled intentionally keeping him in there) is ridiculous; but drama is drama, so I won't push it _that_ far.

A great ensemble episode. Something they will perfect with Deep Space Nine. You guys are going to love that show. The episode's director, Gabrielle Beaumont, died a few years ago. She had quite a resume. Picard only thinks he doesn't like children but would have he would have made a great father.

One of my favorite eps. 1) I love a good survival story, and we see not just everyone rising to the occasion but the ethos of “working together” under the assumption everyone else is doing the same, but 2) most all of the main cast are challenged with problems outside their comfort zones or domains of expertise. (And you kinda see the slight correlation between rank and responsibility, readiness, and lack of griping.)

The part that I always liked about this episode is that Picard starts with a couple of non-critical rooms in the ship. Then after everything they went through, not only does he want to continue the tour of the ship, but he is going to start with the battle bridge. The only thing that SHOULD have been in the episode is Troi "sensing" people in the drive section of the ship. Heck, she's in the unique position to actually lie!! " I can sense several people in the drive section, we have to believe that they are going to notice those monitors." Edit: The baby could not have been male... Keiko would have been like, "I'm going to name him Worf" Good ol' Worf O'Brien

I find it very hard to believe that someone who’s served in Starfleet for years aboard a starship as a senior officer, even the counsellor, wouldn’t know what a warp core breach means. I do like how Ro doesn’t know Troi even has a rank as she always wears the aerobics instructor leotards. 5:41 “Where?” If only Geordi had a thing on his face that could show him temperature differences….

@mb2000 I feel the opposite. It's quite unrealistic that all the officers seem to understand everything everytime. Maybe except of Picard who sometimes seems not to get the technobabble, thx to Stewart making a questionmark facial expression. In real life unless studied engineering noone in office will understand the engineering talk, even when all of you work at an engineering company.

@ I get that, and I certainly wouldn’t expect Troi to know all the ins and outs of how the ship works. But I’d think in general you’d get to be familiar with at least the basics, especially stuff that could lead to the ship exploding. Troi was there when the Ansata planted a bomb on the warp core in “The High Ground” and when the warp core of the Yamato destabilised in “Contagion” so I’d think anything going wrong with the warp core would be fairly obvious how serious it was without being told.

With the air pressure being normal, opening the hanger bay door wouldn’t just blow them into space. It would feel like a large gust of wind.. but the cargo bay would have to be under A LOT of pressure to lift an adult off their feet. And since the gravity is still on in the room, they wouldn’t have to hold on to anything.

In the Navy (or space fleet) the officers are divided into command officers and staff officers. A staff officer (doctor, counselor, specialist) would never be in command of a ship. Even if they were higher ranking.

I just wanna say I love the Beverly and Geordy stuff 'cause both of them are actually pretty nice and polite characters and while in the other groups there's this thread of leadership going through you can't point out any of the two to be "the leader" per se. They are probably not paired together often and I like that they did portrait this ... not awkwardness but politeness within the confines of a larger group you know what I'm saying?... Like in a large friend group there's always one where - outside of this group - you wouldn't really hang with that guy youknow. They didn't overplay it. They didn't underplay it, which I figure is not that easy to hit that chemistry. Two wonderful actors. Plus as a kid Geordy was my favorite and ... well everybody was in love with Beverly come on!...

I know we're not supposed to ponder "artificial gravity" too much in Trek (and indeed in most sci-fi opera)... but exactly where is that lift falling to? The "bottom" of the ship? 😂
@jonathandonley3299
@jonathandonley3299 5 күн бұрын
I guess it depends on where the turbolift was at the time. If it was in the primary hull, the bottom would be deck 16. If is was in the engineering section, then that would have been a much longer fall. Still, a 10 to 12 story fall would have been extremely hazardous, if not deadly.
@Musicita

I always wonder that when I see this episode and my only explanation is that for some reason the gravity plating affects the entire shaft and isn’t built into the turbo lift itself.
@silikon2

@@Musicita I would have thought there's no gravity in the tubes at all because they would be pointlessly fighting it. It would have been a good spot for a dab of technobabble, like "the lift's accelerator thinger is jammed at full power". That even strikes me as pretty reasonable technobabble.
