Child malnutrition in India is very high despite rapid economic growth and also the world's largest early childhood development program. However, motivating childcare workers with performance incentives and empowering mothers with information can bring about an improvement in child health. Child malnutrition is significantly reduced in the short-term and the effect is sustained even after the removal of performance incentives.
Prakarsh Singh is Assistant Professor of Economics at Amherst College, Massachusetts. He completed his Ph.D. in Economics from the London School of Economics in 2011. He has an MRes. and a BSc. in Economics also from the London School of Economics. His main area of research is the impact of performance pay to caregivers on child malnutrition in India. He has carried out four field experiments in association with state governments in India, targeting child undernutrition in Chandigarh (twice), West Bengal, and Punjab. He has received research grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (twice), DFID, UNU-WIDER, Fordham University, and several state governments in India (Punjab, West Bengal, Chandigarh, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan).
