STUPID Power In A Light Levergun - Rossi 454 Casull

Ok so I watched this video a 100 times..😂😂 I found one up here in Canada and bought it. It accepts and cycles factory 45 colt no problem. I shot some 454 Casual factory loads and holy mother of pearl what a hammer. My shoulder cries every time I pull it out. I just say "suck it up princess" lol. After the range I come home, get in the tub carefully, out liquid heat on my shoulder and 72 hours later I feel better. My rotator cuff injury makes a difficult range session but the smile makes it better. I'm going to hunt deer with 45 colt this coming fall. I'll also go moose hunting with the Casull bullets. It’s funny that this video came out now. I have the same exact gun and just two days ago I took it to the range and I was shooting HSM 325 grain bear loads. The two gentlemen next to me wanted to know what I was shooting and Why flame was coming out the barrel after each shot. I let them shoot it and they both said never again. LOL

@@TargetSuite I'm guessing one could probably do better than a lot of "revolver" factory loads. Develop some stuff with longer burn rate powders that perhaps reach lower max pressure but burn longer, and achieve similar velocity without the sharp recoil peak. It's a theory.

@@TargetSuite and Kip: In Alaska, the .454 Casull is used in handgun revolvers as a brown bear deterrent. I'll take the Rossi R92 any day over a Ruger Redhawk for this purpose. Living in Canada, the handgun revolver was never an option, the only choice being a long gun---at the lower end being a .45-70 Government lever rifle or 30-06 (200 gr) semi-automatic rifle.

This is actually the only Rossi firearm I own. I was adamantly against Rossi lever guns, but I was so intrigued by the 454 chamber that I had to get one. I have to say I have been thoroughly impressed by it. A bit of a disclaimer though. I sent mine out to a gunsmith to have the action tuned and the any kinks worked out before I ever even put a round through it. Its a dream of mine to have a Marlin 1894 chambered in 454. Come on Ruger make my dreams come true

I have owned a M92 in 454 for 10 years and love it. It has accounted for a half dozen deer at various ranges shooting hand loaded 250gr Hornady XTP pushed by a charge of IMR 4227. Yes, it is downloaded quite a bit but with the 20" barrel those XTP's almost make 1700fps, never had a whitetail take more than 3 steps after being hit. My favorite load is a 200gr Lee RN/FP bullet I cast myself and powder coat pushed by 10gr of Unique or CFE Pistol for about 1200 fps, light recoil and just a ball to shoot, cheap too. $10/100 to load and accurate out to 50 yards for chasing cans. As for quality I have both the 454 and it's little brother in 38/357, fit and finish is excellent and accuracy is spot on, no complaints from me.

I have had mine for several years. I reload with Hornady 300 grain XTP and taken 4 white tail doe and 1 white tail buck, 10 plus hogs and a dozen plus axis doe with mine here in Texas. I used it back in my home state of Wyoming to take one cow elk. As for the 45 Colt, I have had “fair” luck with the Hornady Flex Tip leaving the 45 Colt cases full length. I did smooth out the side gate as mine was a little sharp, install a saddle ring, Mag tube spring and feeder. Removed the rear sight and installed a scout base with the Vortex 2-7x32mm scout scope. I miss shooting her with open sights, but my aging eyes like the scope and taking accurate shots out to 200 yards is more than doable. Great video!

Never hunted exotics or elk but I've far exceeded your results on white tail bucks, does, and hogs with my 45 year old Marlin 30-30 with a 6 power scope. Longest one shot kills were 197yds on an 8 point and 254yds on a 200lb plus boar. I'm not bragging about the gun. I'll just take luck over skill any day.🤠👍

I gave my brother in law a few over the years and he gave me a Winchester Model 94AE centennial carbine in 30-30 about 15 years ago. I hunted the Wind Rivers in Wyoming with it for an entire elk season. I could not find a bull, but I took a cow elk with her at 224 yards with a 160 grain factory loaded Hornady Leverevolution round and she dropped right where I hit her. I need to take that old gal back out. That cow was the only big game animal I have taken with it. The guy who was with me could not believe you could take an elk at that range with a 30-30. I to will take as much luck as i can… lol. I still smile about that hunt. Keep yours running and good luck!

Back in '01, I got a Rossi m92 on a job at TVA, I went to a shop in Memphis and bought 5 toys. One was a Rossi M92 in .45 Colt. I got some 300 gr. Buffalo Bore +p. Holy High Hell! In a 5 and a half pound rifle that black and blue me halfway to my waist from the bench in only 10 rounds. That gun was brutal with the narrow steel buttplate they had back on the 00`s. I still loved it! I am in the market for a 1879 in .500 Smith!

I have had a Rossi .454 casull for several years. The Magtech 280 gr. FMC-Flat are a great round for hogs. With proper shot placement they don't get up after one round. The Hornady 300 gr. XTP is a great round also and it has some great expansion out of the rifle or pistol. Everyone that has shot the Rossi .454 casull is amazed at the recoil. I enjoyed the video. You don't see very many on the Rossi .454.

I have the Rossi. 357 stainless in 20" myself. Thinking about taking it to Texas where my Son lives and doing some hog hunting. I have just purchased some underwood 180grain black cherry hard cast flat nose, also have Black Talon 180grain and of course some standard Fiocci 158 grain fully jacketed hollow points to try out. Not sure which would be the best, but im most curious regarding the black talons and what they end up doing to the hog. Im thinking those underwood hard cast will just penetrate completely through and not certain if the energy will really transfer to the wound cavity like the expanding hollow point Talons . Any thoughts?

Interesting. I have a Rossi 92 .454 that has cycled every 45 Colt I've tried. In fact it was my go to rifle for Cowboy Action Shooting for 3 or 4 yrs when I first started going to competitions.

I own both the Rossi 454 & the 45C. I also own a Ruger SRH that shoots both. I never considered putting a 45c in the 454 because I like my 454, and I’m not an idiot, I’m an Armorer and I understand why I shouldn’t. The Ruger reminds me of this after I shoot 45C and clean it thereafter. My hyper-performance motorcycle or BMW will both “run” on 87 octane, but again… I’ll wait to try the 45C in my 454 after the zombies come and it’s my only option left…

Thats interesting, I cannot get my Rossi to cycle with 45 colt loaded with the same 240 grain bullet. It will chamber, but not cycle, due to the different length of the brass.

The possibility of giving my chamber a good cleaning and having something that doesn't lag all of that far behind a 4570 would be interesting also

The temptation is always to compare it to the .45-70, but the .45-70 was designed for 405 gr. and 500 gr. bullets. Neither of which would work through the 1892 action. There is a better comparison...the .45-90. The .45-90 was designed as an "express cartridge" to offer higher velocity for (relatively) longer range hunting. It was designed to fire a 300 gr. bullet with 90 grains of blackpowder in the much larger and heavier Model 1886 rifle. The factory loads at the time produced 1300 fps. with the 300 gr. bullet. Modern powders can increase that to 1600 fps in original Model 1886 rifles with smokeless rated barrels (and higher in modern made 1886 reproductions) So...long story short...what you have there is a .45-90, with modern loads, in a Model 1892 action. And that ain't bad! I find recoil to be life affirming. 😜

@@TargetSuite The .45-70 is a better known commodity to compare to. Overall, it is probably not a fair comparison, an old 1886 to a new 1892, because original Model 1892s couldn't handle the pressures of the .454 Casull, and modern 1886s (like the ones from Miroku) can outperform anything that fits through the 1892 action. There being no free lunch, it does this at the cost of rifle weight, gobs of powder and recoil. But it is interesting that modern materials and propellents allow us to do things with much smaller "packages" than they could 100 years ago. And if the .45-90 was adequate for any game in North America back then...the .454 Casull could meet that standard now.

I have bears in my area. Ordered one of these through Bass Pro Shops two years ago. Took three months for it to come in. .45 Colt cycles poorly, but with some fidgeting can get it to work. .454 rounds are perfect. Kicks like a mule, but love the power!

I always thought that the .454 having that magazine tube loading feature was that the cartridge was too big for the loading gate. Glad to see that you can, in fact, load them the "old fashioned way". I commented on a .357 Rossi video that a certain Buffalo Bore 180 grain .357 magnum bullet would make a good hog stopper. I think I've found one that would remove any doubt!!! Great video George ! Love the lever actions! Of course the 454 Casull is a very awesome cartridge! I’m not sure why it was not chambered in the 1895 Marlin as I believe it would have been quite at home there. I think sometimes it’s thought of as a wildcat yet or even ten or fifteen years ago when it should have been looked upon more in the light of cutting edge for it’s time. Dick Casull was quite a legendary pioneer of experimentation! Again very enjoyable!

Buck Elliot and others did 454 Levergun tests back in the 80's. They tried Win 1894 BB, Marlin 336 actions, etc and the Marlin failed in 20 rounds, wouldn't lock up safely. Paco Kelly has good write ups on 45 Colt in Leverguns, where he loads 45 Colt in Win 1892 to 50,000psi. Big Horn Armory also made a beefed-up, hybrid 1886/1892 action that is incredibly robust and chambered in 454, 460, and 500S&W

Buck Elliot was a psuedonym, the actual gentleman passed away a few years ago. He did end up building a 454 levergun from scratch from a modified 1886 action sometime around 2007-2009.

I think the recoil of those pistol calibers is somewhat deceptive, because my little 5 pound Rossi 92 and 44 magnum with a 300 grain bullet is very brutal, even compared to that sharp sweater 530 grain bullet at 2140 feet a second which produces 78 foot pounds. It has a lot sharper recoil pulse

I shoot 180 grain 44 mag out of a 4lb .410 single shot shotgun,, and the recoil is softer than a .410 slug round. The .444 Marlins, on the other hand, would like to crack shoulder bones.

People that have never messed around with, hunted with lever guns, do not know what they are missing. I have 22LR, 357mag, 44mag, and 30-30 lever guns. Never had a 454, but open to new experiences for sure. I find myself using the 44mag the most. I harvest hogs from the ranch for the deep freeze regularly. That 44mag does what it is supposed to do, no drama, bang flop.

Got one & love it. One of the most underrated medium - big game hunting rifle / cartridge packages around! Hand loading 250gr hard cast lead rnfp into the 45 colt will function flawlessly. Hammers everything it hits. I did a diy action slick up job & works just fine . To be honest I have found full power loads completely not necessary & just put unnecessary recoil on the rifle it’s self. 250 - 300 gr hard cast @ 44 magnum pressure levels are more then adequate . Nothing stop’s those hard cast & the .452 diameter bullets definitely do the job .

I think I'm with you. If I had one of these for myself I would rarely shoot high energy rounds. That 300 grain hardcast from Buffalo Bore will work Magic on any animal I would ever see . . . times two😉 But a lighter load will do the trick on our Southern deer and Hogs for sure. @@TargetSuite mate I have found no jacketed 300gr bullets hold together . They still kill amazingly, but the bullets technically fail. I bought 400 of those xtp's & they work like varmint bullets. Once I shoot off those xtp's I'll just use hard cast. I've down loaded with 11grs of trailboss & 250gr hard cast rnfp , for 1100 fps And you will not recover them. They just truck on through everything & whack the trees in the background. 2 x 45 cal holes through & through & pump fat squirts of blood. That load is barely subsonic & basically no recoil. I think those same 250gr , 270 or even 300gr hard cast at 1550 - 1650 fps will work fantastic with mild recoil. I'm so confident in there ability that I'll do a top end water buffalo, donkey & pig hunt & only take the Rossi 454 & hard cast. Awesome video mate & I subbed btw.

A great looking gun. Been thinking for a long time now and a model 92 is about all I need as a house gun. Here's hoping I get lucky next year and can find a Rossi like this. Good power at short range with .45 Colt and can switch to the high power stuff if needed for longer ranges(Elmer Keith said a good reason for all the power of .41 and .44 was for use by police at a roadblock - one well placed hit in the engine and a car wasn't going far).

@@TargetSuite Very informative AND ENTERTAINING nice job. The way those water jugs exploded/disintegrated WOW it was like you were standing 1 foot away from you are right THAT 454 is a beast. Did any of the rounds put a dent in the steel? This must be an improved version as a friend of mine has one or maybe had I think he sold it because it had a steel butt plate at least this one has a rubber one. One thing to think about George that 454 in a shorter case has the same saami spec as a 460Magnum 😮😮

I was just looking at some ballistic info for the 444 Marlin and the muzzle velocity for the Hornady 265 gr. FTX is 2325 FPS compared to 2122 FPS in the ammo you tested. That’s pretty interesting and impressive!

I've owned two Rossi's ,and that was enough for me. Admittendly, they came from the firm before the current owners (Taurus?)bought it. But both were junk, and it soured me on all Rossi's. But the .454 in and of itself really isn't as scary as it's portrayed out to be. Frankly, it hinges on the design of the gun, and your body proportions, as well as your shooting posture. My .454 Taurus Raging Bull is a handful, but not really at all punishing. My Ruger Super Blackhawk, (Bisley) is great fun for .45 Colt, but not fun at all with .454 Casul. The trigger guard will peel the skin off your first knuckles. You have to wear shooting gloves! But if I could suggest a simple improvement for this new Rossi lever action, it would be to add a larger trigger loop. The one as shipped is way too small for gloved hand, especially in cold weather.

The current owner and manufacturer of all Rossi (and Taurus) guns is CBC. They're this large international company that also owns Magtech and S&B. From what I've heard, the quality control of Rossi has become significantly better since CBC makes them (since 2015/16). I never owned a pre-CBC Rossi, but I own a .357 mag R92 manufactured by CBC and it is absolutely fine for its price. It shoots really well, the trigger is good and it functions nicely. Of course it's not as luxurious as a Winchester or Marlin, but it was half the price, so that's absolutely okay. My only complaint would be the loading gate which is extremely stiff, so it's not fun to load. I'll have to do something about it at some point.

my one year old .44 mag stainless is great! I compared it to my brothers .38/40 go Winchester 92 and its really decent except for the Brazilian hardwood stock. it cycles smooth and it's tight.i expected to have to take it apart and smooth the parts like I have heard others do but it seemed pretty good from the start. The excellent "Rossi" arms factory in southern Brazil was bought by the factory in the same region, "Taurus". And it's surprising that they keep their tradition of quality in this brutal Caliber 454 Casull. Remembering that the south of Brazil, a region larger than Germany and Poland, is populated by descendants of Germans and Italians from northern Italy, Veneto, of strong Germanic origin.

The Lee Reloading Manual 2nd ed. has a bunch of subsonic data for the 454 using Trail Boss. Might be some fun rounds to shoot in that which feel like 45 Colt, but will cycle OK. Some others are pretty light supers, around 44 Magnum levels. A 240gr at 1200 wouldn't be too bad. Either way, probably want a Limbsaver on that thing.

Seeing the speed with which that light rifle backed into your shoulder emphasized the notion that .454 Casull is not unlike .45-70. Worst recoil bruise I ever got was from a full size 1886 with a notably curved ‘rifle’ style steel butt plate. Hope that the pad on that much lighter Rossi .454 protected your shoulder from the Rossi’s obvious hard quick punch.

You really described it well it is a hard and quick punch. I have that 1886 with the curved steel butt plate. Standing up it's okay to shoot even with +P ammo. But shooting it from the bench . . . UGGGHHH!

I used to own a Rossi 454. Shooting a Garrett Alaskan load will shake your soul and trying to keep ahold of the forearm from barrel whip is hard. 300+gr 45 Colt +P loads out of the Rossi 45 Colt I have now penetrate almost as much as the 454 loads did. Cheaper every time you shoot and still heavy enough recoil to get your attention.

You are spot on about the 45 Colt plus p. I wouldn't call the 454 Casull a gimmick, but it does shoot both 45 Colt plus P or otherwise and the much more powerful 454 round. Frankly, if it wasn't for KZbin I wouldn't have bought the one I did last week. You'll see that one on the channel here fairly soon.

I just bought that gun and while I haven't fired it yet. I cycled 10 454 Casull through it and then loaded 10 45 LC and cycled them through it just fine.

So based on those recoil numbers, the 240gr handloads are about dead even with a relatively lightweight or hotter loaded 30-06. The Buffalo Bore 325s are about dead even with a 7mm rem mag. Or factory loaded (anemic) 300gr sp 45-70 in a marlin 1895. All in all, very very impressive. I couldn't find one of these to save my life back when I bought my 16" rossi 44 mag carbine. I love that little 44 mag though. Not complaining a bit.

I've been seeking one of these for a while too. Hard to find and even harder at a reasonable price. This was a great demonstration on recoil. It cleared up a lot. It basically comes down to the obvious Newtonian 3rd law. But why would anyone buy a 454 and not expect to feel recoil? That would be like buying a Bugatti and expecting good gas mileage.

I just picked up a brand new manufactured Rossi R92 in 454 yesterday. Currently have an R92 Trapper in 45 Colt, and was hoping the 454 would cycle my 45 stuff. Today, I ran several of my 45 C handloads through the 454, all the way from 250 gr. cowboy style cast, to 275 gr cast with a LFN ogive, to 280 gr. WFN hard cast with a huge flat meplat at 1700 fps. ALL fed and functioned perfectly...I'm happy. Edit...interestingly, my model does not have the loading port in the mag tube. It's a conventional system as found on my 45 Colt model with no threaded in end cap.

Just picked up a brand new Rossi in 454 Casull. I absolutely Love it. Mine is different than the one you show. Mine does not have the screw in magazine tube it just has the standard loading tube from the Kings gate. I wonder when they changed them back from the design you show. Great video. I am loading Missouri Bullet company 300 grain hard cast RNFP.

I'm so glad you did this, George. It would be interesting to compare the Buffalo Bore's offerings in .45 Colt and .454 Casull. If only Rossi made a run of these today but with a Limbsaver pad instead. Then again, I think I'd rather go with the heavier offering from BHA's Model 90A if money were no object. But money is an object, so I think I'll stick with my wimpy .45 Colt with those insane (but safe) loads from Buffalo Bore. But if Rossi were to make another batch... :)))

My daughter picked up a 16 in. version for a song and dance unfired. Within 100 rounds of .454 the stock cracked at the wrist. So I got her an American Black Walnut stock and a metal strap buttplate. Should see how great the gun looks now. So pretty you could kiss it. And that little tiny gun is the most powerful in its weight at under 6 lbs.

The 454 Casull is a monster. I have one and it performs amazingly well with what ammo I can find-which is extremely limited. Great round but unfortunately very expensive. And in pistol form, a Hand Cannon. Be prepared. Personally, I think this cartridge would do great in a 24" barrel.

I recall years ago reading an article on a couple Ruger # 3s chambered in the 454. If I recall correctly one was a wildcat round where the .454 was necked down to .22 cal. I found them very interesting.

Hi George, that is one hard hitting thumper. And in more than one way! Hope you iced your shoulder down after shooting that. Ammo for that thing is crazy,and I thought my 357 mag ammo was high. The 454 sure makes short work of targets of opportunity.

I just picked up a R 92 this weekend in .44 mag 20” barrel and blue finish I have very few rounds through it less than 20 due to bad weather. With 240 gr bullets it is a little snappy but that is to be expected in a light rifle with a steel butt plate. The Rossi really impressed me with fit and action smoothness I went with Rossi for two reasons weight and price it was hands down lighter and cheaper than the competitors I have seen a lot of older videos of poor quality of fit and function but most 2 year old and newer said quality was better. The only thing I found of poor quality was the safety which is tiny and loosely fit and can hang up on bolt in both directions. I got this rifle as a light alternative to my bold rifles and will deal with recoil to carry less weight. Shawn

These are going for $1,800 - $2,000 on gunbroker... INSANITY ! however... There's a few 20" barreled versions & 16.5" barreled versions in 44 magnum, that are much more affordable, but only about 70% as cool. Talk about a perfect heavily wooded brush rifle. Sub 7lbs loaded ~ 36" total length (16.5") ~ 39.5" (20") And will throw big bullets with ballistics far out performing ballistics on the box (in 44 mag). The 454 Casull will just compound that performance. 2000fps + with a 240gr+ bullet will be devastating in the woods on anything These are about 1lb - 1.5lb lighter than my much beloved Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70.

Finding just standard caliber hunting ammo on the shelves in local gun shops or even retail stores locally is extremely hard, yet you can find ALMOST find the classic hunting ammo in case lots from certain online resale "jobber" companies. Manufacturers need to re-think their marketing policies in the interest of the end users. Just my humble opinion.

Part of the cost of ammo (and the so-called component shortages) is the massive shipping of armaments and ammo to Ukraine. I don't know about Rossi from before the early 90's. I had a 62a with a octagon barrel and it was cool as all get out. My buddy owns that one now. I bought a 16 inch 357 92 right after you got yours. I love racing my buddies at the speed games with that against their mall ninja versions of ar's and ak's. I can smoke them by 19-20 seconds and still hit a clay pigeon at 100 yds. (If it is holding still). The sights are tough for me to get the little chunks, as the .38 loads are starting to wounder a bit at that distance, and my eyes are not 30 years old anymore.

i have had that same rifle of about 10 years or so and for 45 colt loads i use 255 gn semi wad cutters they cycle nicely and is easily my favorite gun i own. the cowboy loads from armscor work very well but i normally load my own

Maybe even export to US only. The only Rossis I find in Germany are the R92 in .357 and .44, either 20" or 24" octagon barrel. That's it. I need to ask the importer if they can get the 16" barrel versions, but I'm afraid they're gonna say it will have a lead time of 24 months and also cost extra.

I dunno, I've liked Rossi /Taurus since the Judge (I have a *good* one:), and a 92 in 357 which pretty much solves my truck rifle issues, I live on a ranch:) OTOH, I have a couple of 12 gauge's (pump, and semi-auto) that will throw down a lot more power than your 454 for a helluva lot less money, more versatile too i.e. birds, up to grizzlies....Seeing as you can buy 12 gauge slug shells for around 50 cents each, or a bit less, these days, I don't know exactly where the rossi casull is supposed to fit? Darned pretty gun though:) However, there's damned few things on the planet that a 400 to 500, hell even up to 690 grain slug out of scattergun, won't put to sleep in a damned hurry, of course you might be spending more 'quality' time with your local chiro:) (bout same recoil as a .375 H&H:) Oh, one last thing, with good sights, i'm good out to 125 yds or so, and if I'm careful, a ways beyond that. I had one until several years ago. It fed every .45 class Ic I ever put through it. I have 2 Rossi 92’s in .357, a 20” and a 24” octagon barrel, a 20” .44 mag, and a Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70, with the .454 between the .44 mag and the 45-70, I didn’t really see a need for it. I’ve been regretting selling it since then. Fun, and soft recoil compared to the 45-70 with the HSM bear loads with 430 grain +p loads , which the Marlin loves and shoots best with.

I have tried shooting the .454 Casull, the .500 S&W, the .444 Rhino and .375 Winchester in large framed revolvers and based upon my size they were all too much for me. The .44 mag is the largest pistol round I have been able to handle so over the years I have built up a good sized collection of them mostly SAA copies. Two Ruger Super Blackhawks, one Red Hawk, one S&W Classic Hunter one 6" 629, 3 EAA Bounty Hunters and one Taylor's Cattleman. In lever guns one Winchester Trapper, one Marlin and one Rossie. I think the .454 is good medicine but I want a pistol I can handle in the same caliber as my carbine or rifle in the Rossie's case (20" stainless), the other 2 are 16". If I lived in Alaska then the .454 would be an option I would consider but would probably stick with the 45-70 as you can get that dang near everywhere up there. Thanks for the video, nice job.

I've got the Casull in a Ruger SRH and I love it. I reload so I can afford to shoot it, then it's just a few pennies more than an ACP. Wonderful cartridge, and I like the fact that the guns are smaller than say the .460Smith and the 500Smith. The Ruger SRH in .454 Casull is easy to holster on your hip, the .460Smith is not.

I bought my 92 back in the 80s, and being a stickler for originality, my rifle is chambered for 44-40, since the original winchester was never chambered in 45 colt, and 44 magnum didn't exist back then. I have truly enjoyed shooting this rifle for the many years, that I have owned it. Though many have claimed that the early Rossi's suffered from quality problems, mine has never had a problem with the thousands of rounds that I have fired through it, and some of my handloads were a bit warm, if you know what I mean. I do not believe that 44-40 has been available from Rossi for quite some time, but I have sure enjoyed mine. My rifle also does not have the ugly manual safety on top of the bolt, that are now required on the current offerings.

I have an R92 with 16" barrel in .480 Ruger...I bought it some 10 years ago and had never heard of that caliber...the guy at the shop said there wasn't a creature walking the continent of North America that this rifle couldn't take down...I live in Appalachia and at the time coyotes were becoming more aggressive in our neighborhood...It's a nifty little carbine and makes for handy dandy Jeep gun...

If you can find some of the .452 diameter 395gr WFN gas check bullets that have been made from time to time, or source a die to cast them yourself, you can make a 454 Casull load that rivals or exceeds the power of the standard 45-70. Add in the fact that a given length magazine tube will hold a greater number of 454 rounds than 45-70 rounds, and with the Rossi 92, you will have what is perhaps the ultimate light-weight, big-bore lever action repeater.

I have one of the rare R92 in .480 Ruger. 325 grain Hornady XTP is the standard and most common round. Buffalo Bore makes a 410 grain hard cast. Talk about beast!

@@TargetSuite I doubt it thumps any more than the Casull! Pretty comparable. The .480 Ruger never became very popular, which is a shame as it has a sort of “round” recoil. It is not as sharp as one might imagine. I have no problem hitting with the R92 or accompanying Ruger Super RedHawk in the same caliber. Ammo is unfortunately unable to be located these days, for the most part.

I like shooting leverguns for several reasons one of which is typically lower recoil . Out of the seven leverguns in five different calibers (non of which are rimfire) the only one with objectionable recoil is the .444 marlin . The 45-70 marlins are pussycats .

I love this Rifle, Have one in blued . My favourite. I don't consider it to be too big in recoil. It is OK with colt 45 but only with longer bullets 250gr , 200grn you have to give a little help into barrel. Favourite factory round - Magtech 260gr jfn. Favourite hand load 32grn blue dot (full case compressed) with 185gr sierra jhp for a velocity of 2600fps 😊. Put a Lyman front site on and solder a 7/32" nut into middle of buck horn . Idea to screw in different apertures. But nut makes perfect ghost ring. Happy shooting

I bought a Rossi.357 mag a dozen years ago mainly because I have the dies for pistol reloads, sweet rifle using H110... oh btw I'm in France.

I enjoyed the video. I have a stainless Rossi 92 chambered in 454 Casull. Everyone here in Indiana wanted the .45 Colt version even though the Casull will chamber and shoot that caliber. The only difference between the one I have and the one in the video is the sights.....mine are tru-glow (or something like it). I purchased mine over a decade ago and there was a lot of Internet hand-wringing over pressure concerns back then. I have seen any actual photographic evidence the Rossi 92 454 Casull has ever kaboomed!

It's 10 months later from my last post. I have both a SS 20" 454 and a SS 20" 357, I bought the 357 because the rifles are so nice and I wanted to save a few bucks and stop beating myself up. My rifle was also sensitive about cycling the 45 Colt rounds but being primarily a handloader I bought some no name 250gr soft points and I passed them through a cannular tool from pacific Tool & Die I had and long loaded them for proper cycling. I know, kind of defeats the point of the 45 Colt and I am still searching for a cheap bullet that will work. If it's out there I'll find it.

I have shot every hand cannon made. 500 S&W Mag, Desert Eagle 50 cal, 44 Mag, you name it. The one I vowed never to touch again was the 454 Casull. Stupid power doesn't quite do it justice, but it will suffice. My hand was numb for an hour. Never had any pistol hurt that much.

George, this is close to my ideal rifle, just needs a shorter barrel. I had one years ago, a 16" stainless in .454, but I had to send it back as the machining on the receiver was horrendous and it separated case heads on the Hornady factory ammo I tested in it. 300 grain XTP-mag@1,950 fps and 240@ 2,315fps. that thing was wild, and it seems the 16" is no longer made. hope springs eternal, though!

I have shot 45 Colts for ever. Got i to the Rugers and Marlins so I could load them hotter. Took countless deer and hogs. But got ta worry about these hotter loads getting into my weaker 45 Colts. So I looked for a 454. Then a carbine 454. I stoped all hot 45 Colts and used the 454 light data that nearly duplicated my heavy 45 Colt loads. I was in love!! My carbine was a single shot. Ill be looking for one of these!!

I liked subbed and notified. I saw this video and it reminded me to start trying to find one of these again. A few years ago finding a Rossi was like trying to find ""God"" . And you keep saying how hard they are to find now years later. My dealer will find one if they are making them still. We'll see. I have some big hairy ,ugly animals that frequent our home. They like breaking small trees and limbs off trees to warn us when we venture to close. I don't know though. Rossi is not known for reliable firearms I sure as heck do not need another weapon. Makes me blush every time my wife reminds me of just ""how many "" I have. I have an Armstrong Beowulf I bought. The real deal cost a lot more than the knockoffs, but again "reliable "" is everything to me. I bought the factory 10 shot mags, their ammo, and she is reliable. You said in your video it was jamming on the 45's so honesty is a virtue. Would you trust your life to it????? Peace.

A year or so ago I helped a friend sell nearly 200 Winchester model 94 lever action rifles. None were the older models and none of those Winchester rifles were of better quality than the two Rossi model 92 Puma models that I owned. Some of the Winchesters were as good but none better.

I have a Rossi 44 Mag with a 16" barrel and a steel but plate. It hurts, esp if you are trying to shoot off of a bench. It is definitely a handy hog, truck, ATV gun. I have had it for about 9-10 years and can't complain about the quality. Nice balance in the hand but hurts more than my Blackhawk to shoot with the same load. I guess I am just a wimp. 😳

I'm still keeping my eye out for one to pair with a Ruger Alaskan 454. that 92 may feed fine with 45 Colt if you load LBT-style bullets (lots of bullet out of the case with a long, gentle ogive and large meplat like the cast bullets in that Buffalo Bore ammo). I know that's what I needed in 38 Special cases for my wife's 357 Mag Rossi 92. All the jacketed bullets I tried, from 125 grain through 180, either didn't feed at all or at least not smoothly, but the 158 grain bullets I cast from the Lee RNFP mould feed slicker'n snake snot on a glass doorknob.

​@@jakegandy1173 I'd jump all over a Marlin if it became available, but I actually prefer the Rossi '92s over the Henry guns for accuracy, weight, and smoothness of action (after I've polished them up).
