100% correct. For years, I worked for a large industrial corporation based in NC whose playbook revolved around closing their US manufacturing facilities, first moving them to Mexico, then to China, then to India, solely to avoid higher wages, unions, stricter environmental regulations, etc. And any revenues they generated outside the US tended to remain outside the US to avoid paying repatriation taxes. That in turn fueled even further investments in manufacturing outside the US. And this president-elect thinks he’s going to change that via tariffs?!?!? Yeah good luck. And people, brace for hyperinflation like you’ve never seen before.

And when Trump changed the tax code to allow companies to bring their profits back into the US at a much lower rate, telling people that they would invest in the US and create jobs, what did those companies do? The largest stock buybacks in history (something that became legal under Reagan). The companies only started investing in America when they got giant tax breaks for doing so, from Biden’s various acts (Infrastructure, Chips, IRA).

I've been saying this same thing but people act like there isn't a reason we shipped manufacturing overseas. Cheap goods and even cheaper labor. Businesses are going to increase the amounts on goods and services by little drips and drops BEFORE inauguration, offer an alleged discount or sale or whatever other illusion, then they'll raise the good or service beyond the tariff amount. Why, you ask? In part because it is an opportunity to raise amounts with a generally accepted excuse. But the reason it'll be over the tariff amount they pay is because everyone's goods and services will be higher, even for other vendors to purchase. @ This is a discussion about import tariffs, not corporate tax, but let’s follow your premise of these to concepts being “the same.” If a corporate tax rate is determined, it is evenly applied across all corporations at that rate based on their earnings. A tariff, on the other hand, has an unequal impact across corporations based on how much of their business relies on imported materials or finished goods. Some corporations import nothing, in which case there will be no tariff effect on their business. Some corporations import complete finished goods (like a fully-built iPhone) , meaning the tariff expense is applied to 100% of their COGS. Some corporations import only certain raw materials/components for a product (like tires) that are mixed with domestically sourced materials and produced with domestic labor and machinery (to build a complete car)….meaning that the tariff would only apply to some tiny percentage of the total cost of their finished goods. So, no, it’s not the same.

@@jasonjackson4555 the reason I made the corporate tax argument is that the argument was that Trump would be worse for the economy than kamala. That was kamala proposal. It doesn't have to be that way. But it's not financially viable if we expect the profit margins we've seen in the last 20 years. Ford was pinned "king of the automobile industry" because they made it 8 years without going under 1% profit. McDonalds became a national franchise with 7% expected profit margins. It's just that investors are so greedy that they don't believe in anything that cant be short-selled

@@kaingatesUnfortunately that's how capitalism naturally evolves with less regulations. The investors take over and the investors don't want just some of the money, they want ALL of the money. Let's not forget that the "free market" is a competition and as any competition there is always a handful of winners (or even just one) and orders of magnitudes more of losers. And all the investors care about is winning (aka having the biggest amount of money), regardless of who they leave behind to do so. So that's why regulations exist, so that there is at least a bit going to the people that aren't at the top of the competition.

In addition, wages are rising, inflation is under better control than in many other countries, and immigration is being effectively managed. Covid already caused import cost to go up because international shipping skyrocketed after covid and has never gone back to anywhere close to what it was like pre covid.

Retailers will pass that on. If a business operates on a 50% markup. And they have a product that costs them 120.00 20% tariff included. That item will be marked up accordingly by the retailer..say Walmart according to that retailers markup. So if an item is 100.00 and a 20% tariff is applied once it hits US land then the retailer will mark it up by what ever there mark up is. If it is 50% then the mark up will be 60.00. so now the consumer pays 120.00plus 60.00 that being 180.00 If the item is imported with no tariffs that is 100.00 and the retailer applies that same 50% mark up the cost to the consumer is 150.00 150.00to 180.00 and the consumer pays the difference.some to the government as hidden taxes and the balance to the retailer.

Raising tariffs is ridiculously stupid. Working to bring manufacturing back to the U.S., in an intelligent way, would be wonderful. We are too reliant on China for our goods… (which is incredibly dangerous)… and, IMHO, I believe that is one of the reasons America has gotten into such trouble. People NEED something to do… to have pride in their work… and to understand the value of work on their mental and physical health. With more and more technology taking work away from human beings, I truly worry for us… and the world. 😕 But human beings most often do not do anything proactively. The worst has to happen before we will get off our butts and fix what is going wrong.🤦🏻♀️ Our first chore now, however, is to save our country and the rights of its citizens, by voting for a SANE person.💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙

Outside of the "understanding tariffs" debate, I do think we should start the discussion about why we just accepted that consumers are the only ones who have to eat the increased costs. This isn't normal and businesses used to be expected to eat more the loss than the "outpricing certain customers"-meta we've been in since Reagan. See I'm not against an import tax; popular products manufactured outside of the US should and need to be taxed higher than normal products (because that's money *out* of the local economic pool meaning less government spending) but the increased pricing during an inflation crisis doesn't sound like sound policy-making.

Should also be noted that if there is say a 3% tariff imposed on imported goods, the importer is not going to simply charge the customer an extra 3%. The importer has to do extra work in accounting for that tax so is therefore going to charge the customer more to maintain their profit, ie a 3% tariff will most likely result in the customer paying 5-8% more than had there been no tariff or tariff increase.
