Mike- love your VW content. your comments about Canada are way off. Sounds like you are talking about Canadian Retailing as it was 30 years ago. Retailing is a competitive business in Canada as it is in the USA. Canada’s main challenge is we have a geographic area bigger than the US with 1/10 the population. Critical mass is hard to achieve outside major Canadian cities. Canadian Tire is a successful retailer in Canada as is Costco a US based company that operates successfully in Canada. Amazon delivers to my door with 48 hours at competitive prices. Target stores in Canada were terrible nothing like the USA Target stores. Canada is a very different country with a different history than the US. We don’t want to be American we want to be Canadians- no judgement we just have different perspectives. Trump has declared economic war on us for no real reason. His tariffs will hurt both Americans and Canadians- for what purpose? We can achieve much more together. Unfortunately the current US administration operates on a we win you lose mentality. I guess that works well in NY Real-estate- not so much in International relations.

all I know is what I see. I am not saying I agree with all this stuff but I do see what is not fair. It is very one sided. We have TD banks and Scotia banks here in the US now. No American banks In Canada. Listen objectively.

I think my point was that there is probably a way to make a compromise. And that would probably be require that the Canadians let down some of their. Canadian first laws that would make it more fair for trading between the US and Canada which I think both countries would benefit from. some of those laws are making products much more expensive to the Canadian consumer. Which I do understand about the geographic area of Canada. How large it is. Believe me. if the Canadian businesses were forced to do a more competitive business. It would benefit their GDP as well which at the same time would make a more fair a trade agreement with the US.. just my opinion from looking at both sides of the fence. I do have a great deal of experience and relationships with people in Canada. @@glenzwickerjr9098

@@Mikefngarageiirc, Vance released a statement I think either this morning or last night, stating that they had been in the talks with the Canadian gov after the election They wanted us to increase our defence budget from 1% to 5% of our GDP, and deploy more troops along our border. From my understanding, the Canadian gov said no and apparently that’s the reason we’re being hit with the high tariffs, which I expect will go up even more (I think Trump said up to 50%) if we don’t do anything until the US admin gets what they want I’d like to think that these measures are to strong arm us into doing what the states would like, and would (hopefully) go away once things get resolved, but we’ll have to see I think there’s been a month pause on the tariffs on Mexico while the two countries are entering into negotiations

@@Mikefngarage Here is some info from the Financial Post today "Domestic banks, led by the Royal Bank of Canada, dominate the Canadian market, but U.S. banks already have a presence in the country. For example, J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. employs 600 people with teams in Calgary, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver, according to its website. Similarly, Citibank Inc. in 2019 celebrated 100 years in Canada. U.S. banks are also members of the Canadian Bankers Association, which represents more than 60 banks. The CBA said U.S. banks make up half of all foreign banking assets in Canada, with 16 subsidiaries and branches worth around $113 billion in assets. These banks provide financial services, such as corporate and commercial lending, treasury services, credit card products, investment banking and mortgage financing, it said".

Let's be real, American businesses are no different than the Canadians in a "First Economy". Companies will never lower their profit margins. Even with tax cuts we didnt see companies go out and say "because of corp tax cuts your prices are going down!" Once we give profit on their high prices they know they can charge anything they want. So its wishful thinking, only thing that can offset this is higher wages. But we all know how far we've come in wages.
@Mikefngarage7 күн бұрын
the corporate tax cuts in themselves maybe not but the competition created by more companies getting in the game absolutely will create price wars and lower pricing. Competition is the only way to stop corporate greed. feed the animal.

Last week a company spending $5-10 million on AI took out $1 Trillion in market valuation in one day. An overreaction. Now again, I believe those with strong political opinions are over-doing it. Some do not know some of the actual facts around the specifics with these tariffs. Firstly, Canada the EU and even to an extent the UK impose many tarrifs on U.S. items that we do not on theirs. Then, there are total outright bans where they will not allow certain goods like automobiles, agriculture at all to be imported from the U.S.. On top of that, some countries actually block certain sectors of our businesses to open up in thier countries (Banking in Canada). Just because something has been going on for sometime doesn't make it right. And this does not even consider the lackluster response from our southern and northern neighbors on cited factors why the tariffs are being imposed on them. On the flip side, the items from those specific countries w/ tarifs will initially go up in price, but usually not as much as the tariff. This will cause the market & consumers to adapt in different ways over time. Some ppl will pay the higher costs, while others will switch to a similar product made in a different origin. As time continues, businesses in other origins will actually see an opportunity to replace the products w/ thier offerings at a much more competitive price compared to the initial increase.
@Mikefngarage7 күн бұрын
all good realistic points. This might bring us all to more free trade. Even though I love our neighbors to the north at the same time I want them to flourish. The only way they can do that is if they bring down all those Canadian first rules and this will make their companies compete globally which is what made America great in the beginning. The management style of trump is a bit abrupt and I may not agree with that just like Mr Keppler but it is effective.

Last time Trump was in the "Oval Window office" a lot of production started to creep back into the US and with it came an improvement in quality. Canada? With Trudeau on the way out, and a likely swing back to right wing government in due course, I'm sure there will be deals done regarding the tariffs. Here in NZ some initial panic from our left-wing biased media reporting soon gave way to some assurance from our current Trump-friendly government. The mood here is generally positive with regards our US relationship. The tariffs are mainly aimed at the CCP and much of the rest is collateral. Trump knows damn well he can't be seen to be singling out China without being accused of escalating WW3 (something he doesn't want). So everyone outside the US gets a tariff by default and then they can negotiate and get a reprieve or a deal.
@Mikefngarage7 күн бұрын
Yes sir....I really think Canada will be better once a deal is cut. He has said he would be looking at them. I just hope it is sooner than later. That Tariff will kill canada if it goes 4 years. I just did some calculations and it seems to me that a 10% increase in wholesale results in an equal percentage increase in resale. If you wholesale price is currently 1 dollar and the wholesaler doubles his money. 1x2= retail 2 dollars Tarif increases wholesale by 10% Wholesaler still doubles his money so 1.1x2= retail 2.2 dollars This results in the same increase in price for the consumer as adding 10% to the 2 dollar retail price. The taxman just makes les profit by taxing wholesale, the consumer still pays the same in the end.
@Mikefngarage7 күн бұрын
not a whole 10%. they would have the same dollar amount of markup at a lesser markup. Can still make a similar profit amount at less markup.
@freddyhat97966 күн бұрын
@@Mikefngarage i just hope there's also a carrot to go along with the tarrif stick. if you want to discourage import you need a system that stimulates domestic manufacturing at the same time by subsidising and tax cuts to make it work.
