The recipe for a successful sports car is simple: great looks, great name, and a vocal engine.
VW's Scirocco replacement had gorgeous styling and an Italian-sounding name. But the supercharged G60 engine was a disappointment. Slower than the Scirocco 16V it replaced, the new-technology four-cylinder Corrado G60 didn't find many fans.
Resurrecting an engine design pioneered by Lancia in 1922, VW created the VR6 - originally called the RV6 internally, which was a 2.8-liter 15-degree narrow-angle V6/straight-six hybrid that fit in the place of the previous four-cylinder.
The original 12-valve VR6 is one of the best-sounding engines in a production car; combining the smooth, sultry sound of a straight-six with a wookie warble and none of a V-6's harshness.
It was a revelation then and now - and combined with Mk3 GTI suspension components, the Corrado SLC cleaned the floor of the supercoupe class in every performance metric.
Including price. It was easily the most expensive car in its class, which meant slow sales. Which is the fourth and final recipe in creating a special collector's car.

I love the Corrado VR6 so much, a few years ago I found one with a manual and only 35k miles on it and it looked and ran like it was brand new. Then when I took it in for service, to give it a complete checkup, my mechanic wrecked it. 😣 His insurance wanted to total it over body and suspension damage, because many of the panels were nearly impossible to find, but he did the right thing and fixed it all himself out of his own pocket. The good news is the paint work on these from the factory is horrible, true orange peel delite, so it gave us the opportunity to strip it down completely and give it a gorgeous 12-stage paint job in the original Mystic Blue, plus we replaced the brakes with Brembo red caliper 6-pots in the front and 4s in the back, and upgraded to adjustable MacPherson struts and dampers. I still drive it today and it's just as fun as the day I got it.

I owned a Mk3 VR6 GTI in high-school that was built to a 2.9l, had a cam, and a tune. It also had a full Borla exhaust header to tailpipe. It was also the premier trim level so it had very nice leather interior. I miss that car all the time. Dynod just under 200whp and sounded SO nice. Coolest sounding car I've ever owned. And man what a rev happy little motor the VR6 is! I'll definitely own another one day. I'd love to put a turbo on one. From what I've researched online they really wake up with boost.

The VR6 is an underrated automotive masterpiece. The exhaust note is phenomenal, especially in the 3.2l flavor. I was in the community for many years, and knew a couple people who had a Scirocco & Corrado VR6 units on the west coast. Beautiful lines they have. It's great you did a piece on them. They are deserving of being championed more in the community as a whole.

„VR“ not only is a combination on V and R Type, it also stands for „Versetzte Reihe“. Later on, 2 of those VR blocks in 4-cylinder version were combined in the first W-8 by putting the VR in another V alignment. Even if later turbocharged V6 and VR6 were much more responsive and agile, the W8 was a nice masterpiece of engine engineering.

On the yellow 1 i did the stage 3 kit, smaller pully, cam, chip & a few more upgrades. It made an extra 30 hp or so. Such a fun car. I wish i never sold any of them. I miss them dearly. Once upon a time I had a '92 SLC. It was payment for building a website for a b-i-l. I loved that car. It was my daily driver, even when I was traveling all over CA as a real estate appraiser. It received adoring comments very often. But, the VR6 was so finicky and the parts harder and harder to come by (some I could still find through VW Mexico, some I had to buy from Germany ~ there weren't many sitting in wrecking yards where I lived) that I eventually had to sell it. Door handles would break on the regular, replacing one coolant o-ring would cause the next to fail within a couple weeks, the spoiler stopped activating every time it was supposed to, then the water pump failed. Yet, I was thrilled that mine didn't fall to the dreaded sun roof failure. Until it did when a potential buyer was checking it out. It still holds a place in my heart as one of my favorite cars ever.
@billbradley6380
@billbradley6380 Жыл бұрын
I still have an SLC and had to replace those parts that break you mentioned plus a few more. I did the sunroof (what a pita) and the spoiler myself by going through diy posts on VW websites, mainly vwvortex. Another problem I had which is common is the abs system failing. I recently had a shop remove and replace it with a regular brake booster/master cylinder. It's very difficult to find any parts at a junkyard but there are a lot more companies/websites now that sell and even make parts, finding cheap parts is a different story altogether lol.

That Corrado surprised many mustangs, old school muscle cars, vettes just about anything was sweating if they took it lightly. It was bone stock. Sure wish I still had that car. '92 - 94 the SLC was the king coupe, for sure. By the end of 94 though the next gen Probe GT was coming out, and the 2nd gen Diamond Star (GSX/Talon AWD) cars were launched with Acura eventually producing the Type R Integra... the Corrado's performance edge was over. I started with a Canary Yellow Corrado G60 as a junior in college. 2 weeks after hitting campus with it, my homeboy "P-Dub", who I played with on CAU's Tennis Team, drove a Burgundy MK2 GTI on it's last leg, and he went and got a Tornado Red Corrado G60 immediately. And we became known in Atlanta, GA as "The Corrado Boys", with my cousin who drove a lime green and black Rabbit, donning me with the nickname, the "Corrado Kid". P-Dub and I ran into several guys with Corrado G60s in the city, another with a Canary Yellow G60, one with a Black G60, and one of P-Dub's buddies Tony got a Burgundy G60 Automatic. It had an S button for sport driving which Tony named, his "Superman" button 😉. One time we rode from Atlanta to a college party at West Georgia College in Carrollton, GA I-20 West. Past Six Flags it became a 3-lane highway and we had 3 Corrados stretched across all 3 lanes riding side-by-side going about 80mph dominating the road son!!!! The visual was EPIC! This was the start of our beloved Corrado Club in Atlanta. And every Friday afternoon, before we'd meetup with the Club, P-Dub and I would hand wash & Turtle Wax our Corrados to perfection! Vacuum and armor all the interior, Windex the windows, all while blasting one of our late 80s early 90s mixtape cassettes that we would dub the night before. And we always put 2 fresh coats of silicone on the tires, AKA "Lipstick"😁!! We took pride in keeping our rides "Showroom Ready" and we hit the streets and highways HARD! Too many times out guys in Ford Mustang 5.0s and Turbo Mitsubishi Eclipses always wanted to race on the highway and we ALWAYS embarrassed them and left them in our dust 🔥🔥🔥🔥!!!! My G60 came with black Enkei wheels, and I found some new wheels in a European Car Magazine, the 16" Brother Procast chrome tri-blades and had to get them. So I ran into some folks on campus marketing new credit cards and I got my first card there. I purchased the wheels and tires with that card and was, as we say, "Dope Boy Fresh" with my Canary Yellow Corrado G60 on 16" chrome Borbet Procast tri-blade wheels! After a couple years I upgraded to a Emerald Metallic Green VR6 and led our Corrado Club with it. Our college experience was EVERYTHING and the VW Corrado was an intricate part of those glory days!!!! And we're discussing getting our hands on yet another Corrado in the near future. "The Corrado Boys shall ride again!😂

What tends to be forgotten is that it had nearly the same torque as the VR6, but because it had a supercharger it had much more torque available down low. I had a G60, but it was anything but slow. In Europe many owners had a smaller pulley and a chip for their G60, most of those cars were around the same bhp as the VR6. And in keeping with what was available, some of us went for the 16Vg60 head swap. 250hp right off the bat. the G60 doesn't get the credit it deserves, IMHO.

This is such a great, well researched piece on a car I love. Have owned four Corrado's over the years, and even been to the factory where they were made a number of times... on that subject, VW claimed the Corrado was an in-house design... but it was not of course, and was styled and designed (and of course built!) by Karmann Coachworks in Osnabruck. The 0-60 time was improved on the VR6 not just from the performance of the motor but the gearing, as the VR6 could hit 60MPH in 2nd gear, which the G60 could not....
