It's funny, I was the opposite. I started with Tarja and (still) have a hard time transitioning to Floor. If I see a Tarja version I will always jump to that one.

"(...) it fits her vocals more". That's exactly the key to the songs. Tuomas had her voice in his mind writing the songs which is nothing more than natural. Anette struggled with Tarja's songs, Floor does a great job to make all songs her own (with smart adjustments). Most songs of her predecessors even get better as whole, but when it comes to really strong belting like in Slaying The Dreamer, Buenos Aires around the 04:00 mark it sounds great but still not as strong as Tarja's voice (also here as a whole this version got better, but just a little weaker around those specific notes). No shame as Tarja's voice was trained all her life for classical/opera style where Floor only trained those specific techniques for just a couple of years. She didn't fully cultivate that part of her voice.

this stage presence issue is a point that needs to be addressed..Tuomas had dominion over these matters and in the early years of NW Tuomas tried to paint Tarja as a dark mythical, stylish classical diva as a front woman and an elegant face of the band instructing her to act in that vein...as time wore on, his views changed and he let her become much more animated in her performances, complete with hair tossing and hip swinging..stage performance issues were one of the points of contention with Tuomas.....

Who really cares which is better... The fact is that Tuomas makes the songs and he makes them fit the singer they have at the moment. Tarja sang on like 5-6 albums. Floor has been only on 1... Even Annette was on two fully fledged Nightwish albums... There is no doubt any of the other singers would sound as good for their specific songs/albums... Even Annette has songs where she fits the bill perfectly! Stop comparing and keep on loving! If Nightwish hadn't had Annette, I don't think we would have ever heard Nightwish with Floor... And that would be a crime for all of us Nightwish fans, be you old (like me) or be you new...

Exactly. Their voices are different, but both amazing in their own way. Some Nightwish songs, imo, fit Tarja better, others fit better with Floor. Luckily there are many versions of a lot of songs, so you can hear both versions.

Yes! Some of the songs will just always be Tarja's. Highly recommend Bless the Child from End of an Era and The Siren from Taubertal Fest 2005. Tarja IS the siren and Marco is the perfect complement. Or, if you want to have some fun, Gethsemane (Helsinki 1999) which I think is from their first recorded performance.

Both women have great stage presence. I will say Floor may have stronger stage presence, but she also does something that really irritates me. She often sings over Marco's parts in the songs. it's my own issue of course, but I wanna hear Marco singing his parts as he always has. Tarja never sang over him, she would do back up when it came his turn. I also think Tarja and Marco's chemistry was much stronger on stage.

The stage presence is definitely different with each singer. With Tarja it was something that is really hard to explain. She commanded the crowd even while entering the stage. She had to barely work the crowd and it was quite magical. Even this video which was during a time that she had quite a bit of issues with her singing you can still see how the crowd is just magically at her grasp. She needed to barely move a finger and crowds would go wild. I feel like Anette brough the "band" into the live performances. With her the band started to smile a lot and have fun (though this did start happening a little bit after Marco joined). They were much more relaxed and less serious. Floor is somewhere in between these two as she is with her singing too.

Oh sure, there was no KZbin in Tarja's era, and that was almost 15 years ago she fronted Nightwish, so naturally by far reaction video people getting to know Nightwish now, get to know it with Floor. But there's still some veterans around, to whom that group does not look strange at all. This is a difficult song to sing, doesn't sound right with contemporary style vocals. And then there's a lot of almost shouting too.

I'm sorry I love Nightwish and I love Marko but I can not get with him singing on songs that Tapio Wilska has sang on which are 10th Man Down, Devil and The Deep Dark Ocean, and Pharaoh Sails To Orion. I do prefer the original versions alot better though that's just a matter of personal opinion, but I do think you should listen to those versions whether you react or just in your own time. Reguardless of that i do agree you should definitely get involved in the older stuff both Tarja and Annette(mainly studio versions for her) you'll end up loving the band even more than you already do

You can definitely tell that some of Nightwish's songs like this one are tailored with Tarja's voice in mind. If you fancy checking out another of my personal favourite bands, there is a band called "Lacuna Coil." I don't know how familiar you are with them. "Blood, Tears, Dust" or "Nothing Stands In Our Way" from "The 119 Show" are good ones to check out.

I think at this point we have to just admire the fact that Nightwish has been around for almost 24 years and over that time have had some truly world class vocalists singing these incredible songs :) The early songs were all written with Tarjas voice in mind so alot of them to me just sound right with Tarja, regardless of how good a job Floor does, and its a testament to Tarja that they had to recruit someone as amazing as Floor to take on her mantle. I personally also appreciate the fact that each of the Nightwish singers have all been different - different styles, different stage presence, different personalities, and each left their own unique mark on the band, and ultimately brought them to where they are today :) A Tarja-era nightwish song you might appreciate (that I dont think youve check out yet) is Over The Hills And Far Away, which is a cover of a Gary Moore song :)

Part of Tuomas' genius is writing songs that flawlessly mesh with his vocalists. It's why some songs like 10th Man Down, Amaranth, Nemo, etc sound slightly off with Floor's vocals, and its a testament to her range and abilities that she can perform them as well as she does. Tarja's stage presence improved over time. Though I think this is actually one of her best videos in terms of stage presence. That being said, floor completely dominate her in that area. I agree though that some of these Nightwish songs with Tarja's voice better than Floor's. I also like Dead Boy's Poem and Phantom of the opera better with Tarja.

The thing is just.. if you spend some attention to her timing.. towards the end of her membership in nightwish she began more and more to use the band as a kind of a platform for her performance.. She began to delay her timing, sometimes too much for my ears. .. Maybe a sign of the upcoming split off..? Gotta love both Floor and Tarja. Nightwish has been blessed to have had both of them. If you want a real shocker, check out "Sacrament of Wilderness" from the From Wishes to Eternity DVD. Pretty sure you can find it here on youtube... This one goes back to when Tarja was in the band...and BEFORE Marco joined😳. They looked REEEEEALLY young in that one (I believe it was recorded in 98 or 99 on the Wishmaster Tour).

You should check Tarja and Floor singing together. They did a live colabotation of Over the Hills and Far Away Also i think youd find really fun cheking one the fanmade "duets" of them singing the same Nightwish songs, there are a lot of them out there

I absolutely love the more epic sound the Tarja songs have. Floor makes Nightwish a harder type of metal band though, and I'm primarily a metal fan. The very best song Tuomas has ever written is, however, an Anette song ... so ... The End of an Era (with Tarja) is one of the best concert DVDs ever. Floor also have some of the greatest recorded live performances ever !! An additional problem of pitting them against each other, is that Nightwish has steadily become a better band throughout the years. When they started out with Tarja they weren't at their best.

You can react to Tarja’s song ‘Dead Promises’ From her new album ‘In The Raw’ ;-) Or ‘Supremacy’ from live DVD Act2 There is so many songs from her solo career to react :) You can check it if you want :) It will be great :-)

Totally agree. Dead Promises is great. Supremacy is a fun cool cover from Muse. And one of my personal favorite is from her second album, What Lies Beneath, which is Dark Star. So many great songs from her solo career to choose from.
