I can honestly say it's the game I've played the most over the last 10-12 years or so (despite at least 2 failed attempts to get "into" it). The Steam version is so much easier to digest! A true masterpiece, no wonder it's featured in the Museum of Modern Art.

Dwarf fortress is most certainly a simulator in its own class, an Its a game that will in its own right be timeless, ill start with one story, a roc appeared in my fortress he was hulking but a bit of a coward, had a really low kill count mostly killing those who tried coming to hunt him, he was silly trying to sneak into my tower under construction and got caught in a cage trap, now he is a loyal pet, looking over his physique, history and mentality especially having a poor singing voice, I named him kronk from emperors new groove because he is a big dumb loveable sweetheart, even if he is a huge murder bird

It's somewhere between difficult and impossible to start playing Dwarf Fortress without a kind and patient friend sitting over your shoulder offering guidance. Pretty cool to get that from Toady himself!

I remember a dark time with with my fortress. We were a place of plenty bountiful produce and even more booze. We freely gave it to our neighbors the good humans. Until too many elves and humans drank all our booze and we had to shut down the tavern. But we allowed the human paladins to continue praising our patron god around a hundred. For the past couple years the humans had been sending thief after thief to take our artifacts all of them killed by our 12 warriors (the ones that didn’t flee). But when one thief killed a single fisher dwarf they had gone too far. Thus the great war of racial cleansing began not a single human was spared from our fortress. (Fortunately I hadn’t gelded any of the dogs and they ripped the armored humans to shreds filling our cathedral with bones that took years to dump down the trash shoot with how few dwarves remained. 24 survied from around 74 but only 14 survived their wounds. After that the remaining humans were expelled from our ranks (mainly for their safety) and the fortress forever remained closed from any outsiders. That was so crazy cleaning up all the bodies miasma flooded everywhere much of the fortress was blocked off for weeks and many of the psyches of the dwarves that survived were permanently altered from the events. I was shocked I never even gave any orders to kill the humans they just got really pissed.

Nah. I certainly noticed it but for the purposes of the interview it was beneficial to let everyone see the dwarves and animals simply milling about and if anything went wrong that would be good for the show and give Tarn an opportunity to explain a game system.

Do you recall when trees started being more than just a single tile? I've been trying to fathom which version I first encountered. It certainly wasn't pre Z-levels (introduced in 0.28) but not sure if it was 0.31 or 0.34 when trees also started to span multiple Z-levels (and produce FAR more wood).

with all due respect, dwarf fortress isnt a game that everyone with the means to run it knows about, and if you ask me, that means that its not widespread enough. the idea that there are people still out there who have never heard of or delved into this gem of a game causes me physical pain that should be remedied at all costs
