Planting taros here on Niue is a lifestyle for most families. It is our staple food. Children help by working alongside their parents and learning at the same time. This is how the torch of knowledge is being passed on from generation to generation.
Most weekends and some weekdays the families would tend their taro plantations. It is a lifestyle for most Niueans living on Niue, just like how it is in other Pacific Islands.
There are lots of taro varieties and each has their own unique characteristics such as taste, texture, longevity in the ground, growth factors, external environmental factors and so forth. There is so much to learn, understand and appreciate about taro farming.
