In this video I share movement strategies and tips to reduce low back stress while washing dishes. Washing dishes in standing involves an extension stress to lower back, thus, learning movement strategies to counteract extension stress can be helpful.
My name is Taro Iwamoto. I am a Feldenkrais practitioner and movement expert. On my KZbin channel I share videos of Feldenkrais based mindful movement, tips and strategies to improve your functions and life!
Movement is vital to your health. Improving your movement therefore means improving your health and life. 3 key things are: 1) Daily movement practice to improve movement quality (MOVE WELL) 2) Incorporate good movement into daily activities (MOVE WELL AND MORE) 3) Awareness and mindfulness of your movement and lifestyle (MINDFUL MOVEMENT)

Another miracle! I cant believe I never knew about Horse Stance before. My dishes were very dirty, now I can wash them no problem AND use this at my new job when bending over the counter. Taro, I hope you make billions of dollars but the way you teach movement is priceless! I am tearing up my disability application because after about 6 to 8 weeks of doing at least 2 or 3 videos a day..I feel movement like never before. I can work like a normal person AND use this to prevent injury in the future.

Hi Taro, I wanted to follow up with you about the comment I left on facebook about how the information in this video was going to change my life. It has! About half an hour ago, I set the intention to wash all of my dishes by the end of the day. I estimated that it would take 4 or 5 sessions, with a lot of resistance in between each one, and would be done by the time I go to bed tonight. Instead, the *entire* project was complete in one fell swoop! 30 minutes in, I was done! I don't think I've ever been able to wash dishes for 30 minutes without pain. Thank you so much!

Hey, Taro. Great topic to bring attenition to. Something I do is open the cabinet below the sink and step one foot on the shelf. It is not as high as your bench, but does "take a load off" the lower back. Alternate legs.

God will bless you so much for helping so many people with these real life applications of pleasureable and flexible movement for things we have to do every day and do cause pain so much. My pain with dishes is the neck, from looking down-hinging back.

I sprained my lower back 2 days ago, 16 Oct 2021 while rummaging things from a low cupboard. I am now walking like a peacock! Today, 18 Oct it is better but I am not able to sit for too long. I will keep in mind this video. I am a housewife and stand for long hours too.

I've noticed shoppers in the grocery store will lift one leg, resting that foot on a bar of a shopping cart when waiting in line for the cashier. In addition, they usually will shift the weight of their upper body onto their arms that are on the cart's handle bar. It doesn't look attractive so I try to avoid that stance, but it may have its benefits.

Hi Taro thank you for the tips! Is it important also the positions of the ankles? Maybe that bending a little the ankles as the knees could help the movements of washing the dishes with a happy back?
@TaroIwamoto
@TaroIwamoto 4 жыл бұрын
That's a good observation! No one size fits all, so I would experiment with ankle positions and see how you feel and make adjustments and continue to experiment and explore and I am sure you will find a good movement strategy that works great for you!

Hi Taro you mentioned if there were any requests...would you be able to show us movements that are standing movements as most movements are done on the floor and I don't really have the space available...unless on a bed. I have low back pain (almost continual) and the clenched glute hip to go with it...crossing my fingers you have (or will make) some standing videos soon! thanks

I am experiencing this challenge - but I am needing to lean to a table - thus a bit lower. Then I have chat with a student about their art. This extension pain is exactly what is happening. I will try the feet not parallel. Are there any other words of wisdom?

Anterior
@TaroIwamoto
@TaroIwamoto 3 жыл бұрын
@@plumber10771 my guess is that anterior pelvic tilt bias is probably not related to bow leg. Have you always been bow legged? or is it something that has developed over the years? If latter, sounds to me it's related to knee osteoarthritis, degenerative changes in articular surface of knee joints, which changes the angle of tibia/fibula, causing you to walk on outer edges of feet. In this case, you cannot directly change the knee joints, but you can influence what happens to your knees by working relationship between knees and the rest of your body, and you can work from the top down (head-torso-legs) as well as from the ground up (feet-legs-torso-head). This is a bit difficult to explain in writing, but you may try some of the videos in my Improve Shoulder&Neck playlist.

grow to 6'6" tall then try telling me about posture at the 90cm/35inch kitchen sink. asians have no idea. a far better use for that step-stool would be to kneel on it. the best solution is not to squat, but to spread your legs out to the side, knees locked, halfway to doing the splits. couldnt do it at his sink though, as its built into a corner, a thoughtless design. again, asians have no idea what its like to be tall
@TaroIwamoto
@TaroIwamoto 2 жыл бұрын
good point. i wish I could grow a few more inches at least though. I'm 5'6'', and every time I go back to Japan, stand at their standard kitchen, it makes me think how uncomfortable it might be for tall people standing at their low sink, much lower than American's standard ones. So I cannot imagine how difficult it is for people like you. Thanks for adding your perspective. I realize there are many things that I'm not aware, so it's helpful for me to hear opinions like yours. Thanks!
@Ghryst
@Ghryst 2 жыл бұрын
sure @@TaroIwamoto, and dont take it personally, my comments is purely statistical. ive seen some very tall individual asians - theres always exceptions to every rule. another tip is - when i worked in commercial kitchens as a youngster, i would lower onto my left-foots' toes, knee-down, almost kneeling, then rest my right knee on the back of my left ankle, so i effectively kneeling on the back on my heel. that helped a lot. pretty sure its not an OHS approved position though lol
