I think part of the problem some people have with the suit name of Challenges is that in everyday speech we often use the word "challenge" as a softer euphemism for "problem." In the forest, a challenge may test you, hone your skills, teach a crucial lesson, or bring a setback. They aren't always pleasant, for sure! But that's part of the Journey. Oh, and the Keeper of Visions and I had a long discussion about him appearing in his fish form, and he really insisted. Who am I to argue? :-)

I think the word challenge also has a much more negative association in the US compared to other English speaking cultures. Its also interesting how our own experiences shape and mold the meaning of a word too. Having been often referred to as "challenging" in a negative way in many aspects of my life probably skews my interpretation of the word. Still, though, the swords are about more than challenges, in any way you look at the word.

@@ModernMetaphysicae Renaming suits is, well, challenging! In my first deck, Full Moon Dreams, I went with Air. For the Victorian Fairy Tarot, I used seasons for the suits, and Swords became Winter. For Mystical Cats Tarot, I went back to Air, though the suit was called Sky. I'm curious -- what would you have named this suit in this deck? (I appreciate the discussion!)

​@@lunaeaweatherstone7906 I actually adore decks that use the seasons as suits. It is very challenging I bet, ha! The biggest disconnect for me is that the Swords for me represent our thoughts, our ideals, our beliefs and the intangible concept of balancing your mind and your heart. it is why I always take issue with the wrote interpretation of the 3 of swords as heartache or heartbreak, a very cups association, unless you look at it as a balance of emotion and logic and the perspective that perhaps in your mind that feeling is more than what is actually honestly there, I often liken it to teenage crushes, you THINK you are in love, but really you are not in love, you just very much want to be. To stay in line with the theme of the deck I might have titled suit as the suite of 'dreams' or 'illusions' alluding to those intangibles thought based ideologies. Though, probably too close to 'Visions' so I would actually rename that suit to 'wishes', since I like to idealize the concept that wishes always come from the heart. :) Don't get me wrong I don't personally think 'challenges' is bad, it just does not resonate with my tarot practice as much as I want it to, because I love me some fairy tale fantasy worlds and this deck is SO SO SO very close to my idealized deck in this genre. My biggest stumbling point with the deck really is the inconsistency within the kings of the court - specifically the Keeper of Visions P.S. Sorry if butchered your name, as someone with a super tricky name I know how that is all too well! Also, as a creator, thank you so much for taking time to interact with me, and the community!! @@ModernMetaphysicae I appreciate your thoughts! As part of that tarot community myself, I know all too well that it's impossible to absolutely please every person with every card every time. For me, creating a tarot deck is a chance to offer a new way of interpreting the classic card meanings -- that's the fun part! As for the Keeper of Visions, well .... I knew he was a shapeshifter, like the Weaver, and I wanted to emphasize the idea of compassionate detachment, coolness, and diving deep below the surface. Perhaps the best way to interact with him is to shapeshift yourself too! Enter his watery realm to seek his wisdom.

Challenges don't have to be bad things, they can be opportunities. I love the welcoming foresty green cast of this deck. Makes me want to walk in the woods and read with it under a tree.

I love this deck so much! I will admit that I would prefer a human figure for the king of cups but the way I reconciled the fish in my head is thinking about The Once and Future King (one of my favorite books) and the lesson that the future king Arthur learns when he’s transformed into a fish which is all about the value of compassion and the evils of power without compassion, which really makes it work for a king of cups I think. Awesome review!

Yes, I totally that about that reference too, its not that I dislike that hes a fish, I just dislike that there is not continuity between all the court cards. :) It would have been cool to maybe see all the kings as animals of the forest like they have ascended to a higher state of being.

I have been working with this deck for 2 years. It's really the deck that brought me back to tarot after years hiatus. I adore the Keeper of Visions. I often think of how salmon fight the current to get to their breeding grounds. I see the current as the surface level emotions, and The Keeper in this case is diving below the chaos of what's happening on the surface to calmer waters and getting to the heart of where the surface level emotions are coming from in order to make it to where he wants to be.

Would it help at all if you considered the story of Cerridwen vs Taliesin? When I saw that magic fish as the Keeper of Visions, the story of shapeshifting opponents immediately came to mind and the initial strangeness of the image just washed away. Perhaps this impression was teed up by the image of the shapeshifting Weaver of Visions immediately before it. In any case, examining the Keeper for clues as to what he was about, it was like that magic salmon had winked at me, despite his complete lack of eyelids! So I was charmed into accepting him the way he wanted to be seen, despite my awkward hesitations of him not conforming to my expectations of his species orientation. :)

I am very familiar with Welsh mythos, though I don't think this was intentional design. As an artist, and tarot reader, I like my decks to have uniformity and continuity across the story that is Tarot in both art and theme. As I have stated before, its not that I think it bad, it just does not vibe for me, and as much as I really love the rest of the deck, this puts a bit of a wrench in the system for me in my opinion.

Beautiful walk-through of this deck, it has become one of my favorites as well. I thought the same thing with that King of Cups, he's so jarring as he's the only one in the deck like that. I got this deck right when it came out and I love it to pieces. It just gives me vibes from my favorite stories and books from childhood like Grimm’s, Wind In The Willows, and The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe. The art is beautiful. I am with you on the fish king though. That one really did feel out of place and I always find myself thinking it’s an ace at first glance since they are all animals. Overall though I’m loving it and I’ll be using it for my fairytale and tarot series soon so I think it will be perfect. Thanks so much for the walkthrough and review. They are always A+. 😺❤️❤️❤️

I see the Weaver of Visions and as a being that is a woman out of water and a fish in water as apposed to half woman half fish in water which could mean the Keeper of Visions can do the same but is depicted in his fish form.

I agree! The Keeper of Visions (King of Cups) is a bit ill-suited for this deck. But it gives the reader something to ponder on the standout significance of this particular card. The energy is pagan fairytale-ish which I greatly welcome. I received the deck six weeks ago and just now getting to it. I picked this deck up a couple months ago and love it. It’s very easy to read. I love the fairytale like feeling. Definitely helps me touch my childhood. The Keeper of Visions is by far the most peculiar card in the deck.

Couple of things... First of all thanks for the gorgeous review 🙏💞 I usually don't care for background music cause it drowns out the video maker but yours is perfectly done Secondly, you referred to the 7 of boons as 7 of cups, but its actually the 7 of pentacles, so can u explain the card to me... As usually 7 of pentacles is guy standing assessing what he had grown but this 7 of boons is 7 doors in a tree.. I'm confused 😭 I only ordered this deck last night, hoping to have it during the week 💞😍💖
