Honestly anything that you over collect is overwhelming. My closet feels this way. The best thing I did to help with this is use the kon mari method to decide what to keep and then it's easier to appreciate what you have. Variety is great!! Too many options is paralysing.

Right on!!! I'm loosely doing this method as well to identify what to keep and what to donate. It's a satisfying process

When I first got into terot and oracle I experienced buying frenzy and fomo. Ive since become more careful in my purchasing practices. Thst being said, I'm definitely a collector and admitting this to myself has made me feel better. I don't collect to necessarily use them all as intended, I collect as some people would collect art or action figures. I look through my cards quite frequently and appreciate the art. I do use several of my decks and I definitely have my favorites to read and my favorites to just have. The great thing about collecting decks is that they don't expire therefore there is no reason for me to declutter. I also don't want to risk getting rid of decks that may gain monetary value in the future and thats a good investment to have. What I would suggest is to take the decks you want to declutter and just box them up and put them away; out of sight, out of mind. You may want to revisit those decks in six months or even a year. I know many readers that have made several repurchases of decks they previously declutteted.

Thanks for sharing, this was interesting to read ! I've never considered myself a tarot collector. I own a few decks that are OOP and somewhat valuable and those deck I will be keeping indeed :p I do have a box filled with decks I want to declutter. It's quite a useful technique because I have saved some decks from being rehomed over time haha it's not easy to get rid of stuff ! I've rehomed soo many decks and have never regretted it nor have I ever repurchased any of them.i do agree that sometimes I click with a deck only months after purchasing it!

This has been an ongoing challenge for me, I am mastering it. I think about my decks like my inner circle of friends, I am selective about what I allow in and only choose the ones that I connect with regularly. "Beautiful Artwork" is not enough grounds for me to keep or purchase a deck. I can appreciate artwork without having the need for it in my collection. My decks have a designated spot. I refuse to upgrade the size or shape of my shelf to accommodate for more decks. If I want a new deck, it needs to fight for a spot on my shelf. So for me that means I need to reflect on which deck am I going to let go of in order the the new deck to find a special place on the shelf. I don't have FOMO for independently created decks either, I don't go looking for them so I don't have a fear of missing out.

I have the same criteria as you: I only allow myself to fill a shelf with decks, if I want a new deck then I have some left over, if I don't want to get rid of any then I don't need the new one. I do the same with books, but with more shelves 😂

Ive been deepening my relation with my favorite decks lately and have been super picky when adding new ones. I relate so much when you say that your decks are like being part of your inner friend circle!! I'm also experiencing something similar now :) thank you!

The "new" trend as you call it is like this for everything people collect. I find it depressing. I used to read tarots years ago. I stopped but I kept my decks. My interest has been revived very recently. I am looking for my decks and books and I will slowly go back to it. I have been away from all the trends. The only more "recent" deck I had bought during my break years is the Raven's prophecy. I love the striking art work. I recently went to a huge bookshop in France. The profusion of tarot decks and oracles shocked me. I could not believe it. There is literally an oracle for everything! It is just too much and so many of them are so uninspiring and uninspired. I am waiting to see the Scoobidoo tarot. Considering there is a Heavy metal tarot deck and a Disney villains deck, everything is possible! I bet it will be great fun (not sure it could be used for readings but who knows!). I bought a deck for the artwork because the art book of this artist is far too big and I don't have much space. Not planning to use it for readings. I will reconnect with my older decks. They are waiting to be used again. I collect dolls and the same thing is happening. The incessant hauls and unboxings, what dolls are supposed to be "cool", the completionist trend etc It is not about the love of dolls or tarot decks. It is about consumerism and clever marketing. Very sad really. It is just binge consumerism. It is interesting to observe at least.

Hey1 Nice to see you back! :) A few of my decks were impulse buys. I know I have the soul of a collector. I try not to push too much pressure on myself. I am happy to have them, my decks serve me when it's time. But I understand the overwhelming feeling, I had it in the past and decluttered a part of my collection to feel better. Now I can say that every deck in my collection has its place. And being persuaded that the decks that are meant for you are going to find their way naturally towards you is a very useful belief. C'est cool de te voir de nouveau active sur KZbin. J'aime beaucoup tes vidées :)

Words of wisdom from an old woman😆- There is no perfect deck. There is no perfect partner. You decide what your deal breakers are, and that eliminates a lot. You decide what you would want, or prefer, and (much harder) what is GOOD for you, and you stick with that. You spend time trying to become deeply acquainted. You accept there will be things you don't like. You already know they're not "deal-breakers," so you get real honest with yourself and decide you will/won't accept what you don't like, but more important- WHY don't you like it? Is it about you, or them? Spend a lot of time bonding, and you might just discover that those things don't bother you after all, and there is even more to like than you first realized. Works with decks and partners. Good luck. ❤

With a few exceptions (the decks I keep for research purposes, like The Sola Busca, the Marseilles deck, the Wirth deck, etc) I don't keep decks I don't use. I bought a few decks, sight unseen, from online sources ...and it turned out they didn't work for me. So I gave them away. I still cull my decks from time to time. I currently own and use about 30 decks, and several of them are duplicates of each other. (Some are modified versions, but I've kept the original, and some are mini-decks, etc.) I love having a bit of a variety to choose from, to match my tarot mood, or to give people I read for a choice. But if they don't get used, they get dumped. And I rarely buy a new deck. I think deck 'collecting' like any other thing can get out of hand-and sometimes it seems like deck collecting can be a procrastination device for not really learning anything new about tarot or practicing tarot.

'if they dont get used, they get dumped' !! hahaa I love that! I have a hard time getting rid of things, I will keep this moto in mind for my next declutter! My goal is to reduce to about 30 decks as well, over time. I think this would be a ideal number to avoid overwhelm but also have variety in my collection. and wow, I've never thought about collecting in that way... that it encourages procrastination and doesn't allow us to go deep with tarot or learn something new.. I will be reflecting about this. thank you so much for sharing!! you made several points that were helpful to me

By the way, I am a very big thrifter too. Thrifting is fantastic but it can also be a curse (space!). I have never bought anything on Amazon believe it or not. I boycott Amazon with a passion! I sometimes buy second hand dolls on Ebay but I tend to do it more and more rarely. Thrifting is my weakness... and my delight too! 😉

Honestly, if you buy indie decks there is no problem. Usually we prints our decks localy (as I do) and our financial benefits only serves for us to live (paying our bills and our food :) If everybody stop buying our decks we will just be out of work. So yes, if you like our work, please suport us buying our decks.
