a wet and windy night in the woods, I constructed an Adirondack tarp shelter, got a fire going and made a one pot camp stew, then hunkered down in some scary weather.

How I agree! I loathe it with a visceral passion! So much super video footage is ruined by the bizarre notion that infantile noises on musical instruments is an indispensable requirement for the viewers' enjoyment. Much of it is about as emotionally satisfactory as the sound of a vanload of grand pianos falling off a cliff. Please please You Tubers, stick with sounds of wildlife, the wind in the trees, rushing water, waves on a beach or rain and sleat on fly, the low crackle of a flickering campfire, even the crunch of snow and ice under your boots. Sounds of nature and a quiet, informative commentary, or sub titles let the landscape speak to us all. Don't obliterate the beauty of it's message with a raucous cacophony of inappropriate witless noise.

I have a suggestion for watering the dog. I have an old female boxer with similar water bowl issues. I was having problems keeping her hydrated properly when taking her fishing with me. I finally figured out she likes drinking water from a turkey baster. 🤔😆

I love to listen to the rain when people are out camping. I would much rather have a tent than a tarp. Your tarp is pretty big and should cover you and your dog for tonight. Hopefully the weather won't get too bad while your sleeping. Is it cold where your camping at? Be sure and stay warm ,you don't want to get hypothermia. Good luck and Stay Safe.

It never ceases to amaze me that in other parts of the world you can camp out on a pile of dead leaves and not be envenomated by the morning (by copperheads, scorpions, fireants or centipedes). It must be nice to be able to do this but it still gives me the creeps to watch folks do so!

Greets m8! I liked and subscribed. Some advice if may: Pitch a tarp according to location and expected conditions. The Addie is generally a good set up in fair conditions. I would have used a modified A-frame. Stake down the back and keep the front loose. That way you can pitch the front as a canopy or stake it down to keep out the rain. As a tip, you can pile all that leaf litter at the base of your tarp set up as a draft block and as a gutter.

Excellent video! Loved the vanishing act at the end, hehe. Thought you were being beamed up by Scotty! I have now built my own tarp shelter in the back garden with a basic wooden frame and a huge green tarp. I have a fire place with a heat reflector and wood storage. I cooked my first stew in a lovely Dutch oven the other week and slept over night in it with my Dog, Dolly. It rained all night but I just loved it. I am lucky enough to live out in the sticks surrounded by woodland and fields and my garden is big so well away from the house. I have friends with woods who have said I am welcome to camp in them but I am trying to pluck up courage to go do it. I know I will soon, with my trusty Dolly. I do love Tink!! x

Three things I learned about tarp camping: 1) Ditch whatever tarp you're using if it isn't a 12'x12' 2) Learn how to make a TyVek bathtub using stakes 3) Carry two tennis ball halves in the event you want to create a configuration using posts to protect the fabric

Thanks. Widowmakers? The wind is too strong for a large above ground fire? Perhaps a Dakota fire pit? One slip of that knife &...? Cold, wet, smokey shelter...live and learn while one can have fun. Miserable by choice...what if no choice...? The wisdom learned can pay off when the events happen like a check list one by one; some quickly in sequence, if not simultaneously. Enjoy the moments of leisure. Making lists to help as preps are made, so once out there not to lose train of thought. Have you thought about creating 2 walls of logs behind your fire; to stop the wind from blowing the smoke and ashes towards the inside of your shelter? I've seen that done on other videos. It helps with the smoke, and your wood burning up too fast. Just take 4 sticks and sharpen one end, to stick into the ground, for each wall. Then you take some logs and lay them between the 4 upright sticks. The 2 walls should create 2 sides of a triangle, with your fire in the middle of them. Should help protect your fire from 3 sides of possible wind.

Get a big rock and put it behind the fire that way you wont get the smoke blow in.. it will draw up and away. If you cant find a big rock then build a screen from two stakes either side and wood horizontal lengths,,, You we're doing my head in mate putting up with that smoke :).. Big Al from Australia :)

Dan,as ever a pleasure to watch you two. Kudos for staying out in that stormy weather buddy, looked and sounded harsh. Could tell by your eyes the smoke was a nightmare, but, isn't it always? I like my camping meals to have a bit of burned wood ash as a seasoning; gives it that woodsy flavoring. My dog never complained, and she is a picky eater. She especially likes trout cooked right over fire or on flat rocks with a wee bit of burn on the skin. She is a bit of a blanket hog so I got a large sleeping bag we share her against my back outside me inside. On winters night I cover her with my jacket and in two days we both smell like wet dog, but heck she is a great camping buddy. I often just trench around my ground cover and tarps sloping sides for water run off.; it doesn't take much depth and slope or time to ditch it out. Another and better way, is to bathtub interior by placing long 2- 4 inch diameter limbs under ground cloth along inside border; works great. That is for first four or 5 days, after eating wild birds and squirrel or rabbit she farts all night which makes me want to kick her out from shelter or tent, but then she never complains about smelling mine. What's a few farts among best friends. Great tarp camp film; may you and dog buddy have a good life, for wishing good day is to f'n short a wish. The Creator made 1 realy big mistake, he gave our dogs too short a life.
