I have no intentions of reviewing these two tents side by side sorry..I am not big in knots I am afraid and should know more but generally just use a climbing figure of 8 for strength and reliability on guylines.. Always well considered observations/reviews from someone who walks the walk so know's what does and does not work, or knows the limitations of certain designs and features. Keep them coming. Great review, Tom! The fact that so many KZbinrs complimented your video is a testament to your excellent work. If you had to choose only one tent between this one and the Scarp 1 Ultra, which would you choose?

Hi thank you for the comment. I'd still take the Scarp as it's strong having more poles and supporting rods and enough space.. But when the one person design of the ArcDome comes out that would be a harder decision.. best wishes Tom

It's great to see new fabrics on tents. Silnylon has been around for many, many years and it has its cons. But at the same time it's proven to be very reliable ompared to many newer fabrics. Wonder how durable ultra tnt is compared to a good silnylon. Time will tell, I guess. Thanks for sharing, getting second thoughts on getting the Hilleberg Unna now :D

The inside door is unacceptable. Too low, it must go all the way to the top. I can’t sit in the tent with my feet outside down in a snow ditch were the vestibule is for winter cooking and shoe changing.

I hold your Unna review in high regards. Would you take this or the Unna? They aren’t exactly the same tents, but do have overlapping use cases. Thoughts?

I would take this one.. Its bigger inside and in the vestibules..It has two vestibules.. just as strong and much lighter, better ventilation, and feels next generation with the fabric.... I hope this helps.. best wishes Tom

Personally I'd trust Unna more than this. It can also be double poled with 10mm poles. The pole sleeves on Unna also seem better thought out.

Hey Tom this is definitely an interesting tent and I think it may end up a polarising one. I had my name on the list for one but having seen it up close it won’t suit my needs; that’s not to say of course it will do a great job for many other peoples. What I do like - the weight, the space, the vent supports. What I don’t like - the gap in the pole sleeve, the inner door is too small, the lack of a door tensioning band (I think I’m right in saying), no corner guy out points ( I prefer a traditional design on this), the lack of supplied guy lines ( miserable by TT) , the large flat panels in wind and considering all this, the price. Great idea with the rings on the guy lines. As you know Samaya employ this method and it really does seem to function incredibly well for the reasons you have outlined. Tents are so subjective based on specific use so it’s good to see new fabrics and designs. So for this I do applaud TT.

Hi Gary, thank you for your detailed comment.. The gap in the pole sleeve is actually ok IMO.. Even when manufactures make it continuous I have found its still a sticking point where poles cross and you still have to free it up.. The fact that it is open makes it very easy to do so.. No door tensioning band.... I am not sure its an issue in freestanding tents but it might help with tension issues on the fabric... Tarp Tarp definitely control their costs but even so I know that my Silnylon Scarp even including crossing poles was close to £300 cheaper than a Hilleberg Akto.. and the TNT one still couple of hundred lower... The lack of guy lines is a well known point on Tarp tents but personally I like selecting the actual cord and attaching it myself as just something fun to spec up your tent... BUT as you know I really like Tarp tents and have gone off Hilleberg as my camping needs have changed and Tarp tent particularly in the form of the Scarps suit my needs better.. best wishes and thank you once again for this detailed thoughtful comment.. I admire your dedication to camping. Nowadays , I get sidetracked with other outdoor pursuits. In winter in particular I find camping difficult due to the amount of time you have to spend in the tent. You are also willing to try out a variety of new tents and designs, I prefer to just use tried and tested tents for peace of mind. No intentions to buy another tent as have 3, the Soulo BL, Anjan 2 and AKto, but would buy another Soulo or Akto if it was made from the sail cloth on this tent.

Tom, could I ask your advice? I’m looking for a second tent to use in the uk, primarily for me but with the option of camping with another person (usually a child) through all seasons. Is there any reason to consider a hilleberg Unna over this? This seems lighter, more space for 2 people, vestibules, potentially just as strong. Would you even think about getting a hilleberg over an ArcDome for uk wild camping? Any advice much appreciated.

Hi thank you for the comment... Yes I have tested the Unna and while I liked it at the time I definitely prefer the ArcDome 2.... Probably as strong but way lighter, more spacious, two proper vestibules etc and cutting edge fabrics.. While Hilleberg tents are really good I have sold every one of mine and don't regret it one bit.. Hilleberg are not pushing forward with tent design.. They think they don't need to but I think very differently.. best wishes Tom

Pack size would be about 20 percent larger than an Unna.. But it's a bigger tent with two workable vestibules.. Best wishes Tom

Hey Tom, it'd be interesting to get thoughts on fly material strength & different fabrics, especially in the context of high winds. We're seeing UL tents with thinner & thinner materials. I've rarely seen fly's rip, with poles & pegs being the primary cause for catastrophic failures, has this been your observation?

Hi yes I agree it's usually pole failures... But some manufacturers are being very customer led and in the quest for light weight and packability fabric used is getting thinner and weaker . @@TOMHEANEY100 that would be useful. I’m 6’3” in height but after some careful measurements my “sleeping length” is actually more like 6’7”. Sleeping on my back my feet relax at slight angles meaning my toes never point to the ceiling, this results in adding a couple of inches. I usually sleep on my side, almost in the recovery position with one leg straight, again this increases a few inches. this is where the real world internal length of a tent is very important. Anyway, i enjoy your vids so keep them coming.

Great review, doesn’t sound like you are going to be a fan of the x dome when it comes out with its hub pole set and sil poly fly😂. I’d still love to see you test it, it looks ideal for what I want normally from a tent but would still appreciate your view on its limits.

Thanks for the response, that’s a shame but I understand why you are taking this approach to the pending x dome. I’m hoping it’s going to be ideal for long distance hikes in the spring to early autumn months. I’m still to settle on a winter/possible poor weather tent, I currently have a terra nova pioneer two and am considering getting the scarp 1 to reduce a bit of weight but just don’t like the pack size of it.

This author's Ultra delaminated. It also absorbs some water; not as much as Nylon, but way more than DCF. It was waterproof until it delaminated, then it was as waterproof as bug-netting. This TarpTent is 2-person at 54oz, while Durston is 1.5-person, but only 34oz. And this Durston is Polyester, not yet DCF. One can only imagine how light Durston's DCF version will be? And it's a huge 1.5-person (two-wall); big enough to bring the whole backpack inside (or a dog). Big vestibule too. Neither Tarptent nor Durston is long enough for this author (6'5"), but Durston's end-angles are steeper. For example, Mr Heaney showed his toes touching the (single-wall?) end without a bag/quilt; imagine 5" more vertical inches of insulation collecting condensation?
