I was blessed to meet both of these giants twice after Mahavishnu Orchestra shows in Detroit. Both were incredibly humble and blissed out that these teenagers dug their music and were searching for answers like they were. Little did anyone know Narada would become the mega produce that he is. Unforgettable!

YES - the guy is a superb name-dropper & creditor of the greats - and his discography introduces people to Surman, Coryell, Cobham, Shankar, Jan Hammer, deFrancesco and look what became of Narada - JM brought back Elvin Jones for After The Rain and it is beautifully played (despite a bit chorussy guitar tone)

No Mr. McLaughlin, the version of Zawinul's original arrangement of "In A Silent Way" was not on Weather Report's Black Market album in 1976. It was recorded in 1970 on Joe Zawinul's record simply tiled "Zawinul."

Hi Narada, I don't know if The Warriors have any kind of future gig, but just want you to know that was a very spiritual, happy, joyous time.....thank you. The Stones are gone, don't know if members are all still around. I heard a recent Live Album from the Palo Alto Stone..............great music! Hope you are feeling well and ready to keep the music going. Be well.

Narada you are one of my favorite Drummers and wowie! loved the entrance you did with some your time with Mahavishnu. That part were you come in on Lila's Dance midway after the Blues thing gave me chills (One of the best drum entrances ever imo) and more chills with the violins and the band afterwords. What an amazing tune, it was at times two tunes playing at the same time. Narada you seem to listen to the whole band becuse you have such great interplay in your playing.

Yes Narada had more to his playing....was something playing through him?.... Many drummers had power but there was something different about Narada. His drumming behind luc-ponty and mahavishnu's blistering solos...words fail

"You gotta form your own band, John." Thank god for Miles! Wonderful conversation with MJM. He's always a delight to listen to because you learn a lot about many things, especially contemporary Jazz history. On the point about Sufism being the mystical school of Islam, this is incorrect. There were mystics who existed long before the advent of Islam in many parts of the world. When Islam spread violently where people were forced to convert, the mystics continued their practices in secret but, over time, outwardly took on some of the Islamic characteristics. Unfortunately, even today, they are not considered true Muslims by the majority Sunni.

Interesting comments on discipleship (mellows with age). Shaktipat initiation is in the tradition of Siddha Yoga and JM got the special attention from his guru which helped create the intensity of the first Mahavishnu band. A rare manifestation for a western band which inspired many people including myself.

What John says about sense of wonder is important. We can never lose it. I get a lot of my sense of wonder from listening to and playing music, mostly jazz, and from reading and writing science fiction. I start every day listening to jazz as I eat my breakfast and enjoy a nice cup of coffee. For me, it makes a very big difference how I start the day, and I'm not a morning person. But we all have to get the day started and make sure we have a good one. It's worth it. I often start the day listening to Chick Corea's My Spanish Heart or The Leprechaun.

I listened to the entire interview hallelujah! Enjoyed the story time and history Mahavishnu John McLaughlin shared and there is gong to be a part 2!! Narada enthusiasm was spot on the ground breaking amazing fusion of Rock, Jazz and Indian music John did with amazing musicians and brought it to the world. One of the many things i liked about John is his creative musicality be it electric or acoustic, with emotion and high energy! John could, did, does were others could not make music out of effects that that was way out there and with the help of great Musicians like Narada made it Rock, the tune "Miles Out" is and example of that joy.

Coolest thing is he realised’ that without Sri Chinmoy , he would not be what he is today’ ...that is how he changed the world’ as Narada told him: By being a devoted instrument . God is the only force that can bring change into this world. Hence Mahavishnu’s humility.

At approximately 19:00; McLaughlin seems to be confusing the band VSOP, 1976-1979, with Tony Williams, Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, and Wayne Shorter, with Tony Williams's 1980's quintet which was signed to Blue Note Records (VSOP was not signed to Blue Note Records). William's 80's quintet featured Wallace Roney on trumpet, Billy Pierce on tenor saxophone, Mulgrew Miller on piano, and for the majority of the quintet's existence, Ira Coleman on double bass. Charnett Moffett and Robert Hurst had both preceded Coleman on bass however. There was also "A Tribute To Miles" record and tour in 1992-94 which featured Williams, Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, and Wallace Roney on trumpet. McLaughlin is conflating some combination of these various bands and records.

IN FAIRNESS this guest does have to come back - since JM now needs to shout out people like Trilok Gary, Ranjit, Etienne, Coryell, Corea, Jaco, Beck, collaborations - the Parker-tribute Cherokee with cordless acoustic in front of big band (minus Doc) on The Tonight Show - plus that underrated One Truth Band (which performed tracks from Electric Guitarist, plus any Mahavishnu material with ease & with better FOH sound - in fact the best I've ever heard.))

Has there been a part 2 yet? I would love to hear more about those early days of creating the Mahavishnu group.. those first two albums changed my musical direction….. I heard “Birds of Fire” in concert at Rhode Island uni in March 1973, just a month before I left the USA to move to London, UK, to establish my music career! Totally inspired me! (PS I’m still here in UK, still pumping out the film scores and albums!! 😎)

@@peterbaione1014 It's the most fascinating phenomenon I witness all the time. How someone can be so advanced in one field, yet so clueless in another. I think it might be prevalent in high achievement types because these types generally have an obsessive element to their characters. This is what gives them the laser like focus to achieve such high functionality. The downside is that they can ignore the reality outside of their specialisation.
