I watched this movie many years ago and was surprised that a work of this quality wasn't (and still isn't) better known. The two leads had great chemistry together --- wide-eyed, innocent little one, hungering for an epic story and a substitute father and a cynical, suicidal stuntman who are drawn together through storytelling.

I was slightly pretentious back then but I'm better for it. The Fall is one of my favourite films of all time. The cinematography is second to none. The message is meaningful and can be translated into my life. Beethoven's music emanates from my speakers regularly as a result of that amazing intro. Tears fell.

I'm forever telling people about this movie because it's the most beautiful movie I've ever seen. I found it by chance back in 2006 and gave it a go because I loved Lee Pace in Pushing Daisies and WOW. It's been in my heart every since.

For a while, I wondered why this film didn't pick up a lot of awards. But when you see it, you soon realise that the film's budget had been spent on making the film rather than promoting it, wining and dining critics etc. I'm glad Tarsem prioritised the spend as he did. How else could he have produced the steady stream of amazing images and the fine details evident in the props and costumes.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Not just that it has Whirling Dervishes, but also the incredible locations they filmed at - particularly those where they film from a great distance with the story taking place in the middle of this vast, incredibly beautiful, natural scenery. I saw this at a time of transition in my life, where I had to make some choices. Either give up or carry on. It touched me deeply, and along with Roy, I too fell in love with this little girl whose story was unfolding on the screen. While at a library, a couple was looking for videos to check out for the weekend, and when saw that The Fall was right there in front of them I stepped forward and told them how much I love this movie and how beautiful it is. They decided to check The Fall out for the weekend. Once they checked out, they left the library, but they returned because they had something they wanted me to know. They said that because I recommended this video because it was special to me and I wanted them to see it, that I was their Angel for that day and they gave me an Angel pin. I still have that pin in my safe, because it meant the world to me at the time.... the love they showed me was something I really needed-- even from a stranger. I meant so much. Even when a clerk in a store would smile and say "Good morning" I would think to myself that they have no idea how much that smile and those two words meant to me. These things are deeply important in life but we tend to take them for granted. So, I was their Angel that day, but in reality, they were mine, and they helped save me. So, just watching this video and remembering all of these things brought tears to my eyes as I tried to explain to my friend why this film is so special. I love Tarsem for taking the time, traveling the world, and going over-budget to deliver a masterpiece.

Ah, I’m so glad you have featured this, one of my favorite films of all time. Of note is that Tarsem wanted to film this beautiful locales as they were because he feared they would be gone or destroyed soon, so location seems very much a character in the film. Also interesting (and perhaps unethical) is that Lee Pace never let the little girl know that he could actually walk during the entire production. She only discovered he could when the film had just about wrapped. I have to say that I love the naturalness of the child in the film and the chemistry between Pace and her is unparalleled. These very quiet and intimate moments between them are so sincere. Just lovely performances all around.

I just watched the movie last night and man, what a spectacle. It was beautiful - visually, yes, but also just the growing relationship between the two main characters... and the way you get to see the depressing reality through the eyes of a child... I thought the girl who played Alexandria was incredible. And I loved the little details like them having trouble communicating at times, due to the language barrier.. it felt very realistic. This analysis allowed me to notice and appreciate a lot more nuance in the storytelling. Wonderful video, thank you.

Even though Tarsem is unfairly known to develop strong visual concepts in detriment of the stories, this movie is his greatest achievement so far because both elements are pretty much balanced comparing to previous and further movies and a TV show he directed. I dare saying I've watched this movie more than 20 times through the years being a new unique experience each one of them. There's so much passion, love and vision about how he wanna tell this story and about every single detail he wanted to achieve that is mesmerizing. Eiko Ishioka's costume design is much more than just exotic garment pieces but also a strong coherent element of narrative as well that translates perfectly what Tarsem had in mind. The wide shots and the perfectionism of cinematography puts storytelling into an epic proportion that both mature and young audience will be fascinated to watch. It's beautiful. Every single scene is a piece of art. One of my favorite movies, and one that trully deserved more attention at the time it was released. Loved your analysis, makes me wanna watch it again.

I remember my old 9th-grade art teacher putting this on towards the end of the year. I never did get to finish it. After a while, the name of this movie became hazier to me, and the only way I could remember it was one of the names of the locations, "Butterfly Reef."

Thank you for going in depth with the meaning of that final battle scene. I’ve never put this into words, but I often feel like Roy when he’s getting beaten at the end and starts to give in-with governor odious berating him the whole time, but it’s really Roy berating himself because he’s the one telling the story. It’s really what depression feels like. Like I’m destroying myself by seeing myself in the worst light, refusing to look at my circumstances with optimism, and imagining that others believe horrible things about me as well. This was an excellent exploration of this film, thank you for putting so much time & thought into it 💗

Great analysis. This is one of my all time favorite films. My only complaint is that Tarsem Singh does not direct more films. For those craving more, Singh also directed _The Cell_ (2000) which has a similar visual palate. A much, much darker story, however.

My favourite film of all time. I was in tears watching your presentation. Wow, so beautifully explained. The power of Narrative Counselling reaffirmed. The power of love as a factor in transforming suicidality and leading to healing from trauma. The movie took ten years to make (shot in 28 countries for four years), and nearly killed the genius director Tarsem Singh. Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92, II. Allegretto will always now have associations with this movie. Apparently, in the movie "Immortal Beloved" (1994), a Beethoven biopic with Gary Oldman, the musical work was about the STUGGLE of Beethoven travelling overnight, in a horse drawn coach, getting bogged in a storm, in the mud, in an unsuccessful rendezvous with his lover , (or so the fiction goes).

I am so glad you covered this film. It has a beautifully surreal flow, and I love the way it shows the relationship between the story and the real world. It certainly helps that it's two leads are so insanely good. Side note: apparently this movie was part of the reason Peter Jackson cast Lee Pace in The Hobbit. You pretty much said what I feel when watching it. Roy needed this story, but it was never really his entirely. Everything that happened to Alexandria shaped and formed it around his words. Even when he does make direct decisions that go against what she wants, they're often him reacting to Alexandria or something she's done.

I have watched this movie 14-15 years ago for the first time. Have rewatched it several times since. There are so many hidden symbolism in the movie. Everytime I rewatch it, I see something new. Example: In you video, go to 6:33 and watch that scene in movie. You will find a reference to Freud's Oedipus if you look closely. (Hint: kiss)

I let someone barrow my blu ray copy probably 10-12 years ago never got it back didn’t think much of it. Went to go buy one. $250!!! I just watched it. Stunned. Never heard of it before. I needed to hear about it, jumped onto KZbin and found your video, thoughtful and provocative as is the film. I'm glad it's considered a masterpiece! But so little known! I found Tarsem Singh through Mirror, Mirror from 2013, which I found recommended in the comments on a Critical Drinker roast of the live action remake atrocity of Snow White. Mirror, Mirror was such an intelligent, adorable, whimsical and gorgeous fantasy take on the fairy tale that I became an instant fan. Thanks so much for this. I like how you anchor all this fantasy with a good story- just as he did.

Lots of old stunts. It's how the film ends, felt really powerful though I haven't quite figured out why. Maybe it is the tragedy of it lots of "falls"

The opening is the fall that left Roy in the hospital, to begin with (he comments when the movie is they filmed is finally shown that they didn't even use his take). The stuntmen that fall in the end are Alexandria seeing Roy in movies that he was not involved, she sees them as who she wants to see in the stunts - not who they actually are, ex: Chaplin. Most if not all b/w scenes are from actual movies, a nice tribute to end a movie about storytelling. I don't remember anyone explicitly jumping to their deaths, but it does add to the tragedy of stuntmen's unsung efforts.

This week I have accomplished my life dream to visit Chand Baori, the stepwell were Darwin dies. 3500 steps, 13 tiers, with an incrusted temple, an Indian jewel form 8th century. If you ever go to India, it’s just about one hour to the west of Taj Mahal (and on the way you can stop at Jodhabai Palace in Fatehpur Sikri, the place were Luigi dies and makes explode a building of the palace)

I know people frown on it but if you can't access it any other way what are you meant to do??? If you look up on KZbin 'how to use qbittorrent' there are lots of good tutorials. It's a lot easier than I thought it would be :)

I'm not sure if you're still looking but I stumbled across it free on KZbin recently (you can use something like 4k video downloader to download it) or I taught myself how to torrent using KZbin tutorials. I know people frown on that, but what are you meant to do if you literally cannot access something any other way?? I now have a stunning 1080p version of it that I torrented, it's well worth it. I also heard someone say it's available on ITunes but I could be wrong!
