Looked up that generator and it's a brushless model that uses a capacitor. The capacitor has probably started to fail hence the low voltage. If you didn't pitch it yet, put a new capacitor in it and adjust the RPM back down and it will probably work like new.

Yes, i think you are right! In Europe they sell it with a 800W 230V generator head. I bought it, because it doesn't need an oil change like bigger generators. It is strong enough to power small tools. I use it about once to twice a year and bad fuel is always an issue. Mine never starts at the first pull!

Klaus, mine starts at the 20th pull or so, but I run it dry whenever I'm done I just shut off the fuel and let it run out. 3 years no problems. Hedge trimmers,electric chainsaw, Sawzall, drill, ect... love this little unit!!

James Condon is an excellent channel to check out for repairing generators. From what I've learned is the RPM adjusts the 60 HZ frequency, and there's a regulator on the power head that allows you to adjust the voltage level. You need to put the rpms back to 3600, and find the regulator to adjust the output voltage.
@jkmacgyver
@jkmacgyver Жыл бұрын
Yep, set these to ~62hz, mine did not have an air filter. Replace "Torch" plug and apply locktight to carb bolts/replace junk fuel line.. and they are decent units for lights or tools.. they 4 stroke under light load and are a copy of an old Yamaha set. No brushes or voltage regulator.. just a cap and diodes.

Hey Carol I hope you see my comment here but the problem with your little generator if you haven't thrown it out is not the capacitor there are two windings in this generator and attached to each end of the winding are diodes one of your diodes is open I had the same exact problem on a Chinese built generator and what I did was I ended up tearing the generator apart pulling the Armature out and carefully breaking loose the encapsulated diodes in clear resin isolating each diode by unsoldering them then check the diode one was good one was bad that's why you only had half the voltage that you needed at the specified RPM I took the diodes out put US manufactured diodes in there at a cost of $0.10 each put the generator back together and it's worked fine ever since the Chinese use crappy Electronics on these generators just enough to make them work and I really love watching your videos I have been a professional automotive mechanic and transmission specialist for 34 years and I've tinkered with lots of lawn equipment too outboard motors anything like that but I do love watching your videos very educational we love it

That silly little strip of foam in the middle is the filter... I found with the ones I've fixed they really need the airbox assembled so they are tuned rich enough for full load. I also found that you get maybe half of them put out a good solid 800W and others are barely able to do half that no matter what you do. For a production cost of about US $20 per unit landed the manufacturers used to include 1000 free units for every 2000 units - literally that was for expected warranty claims ex factory. Every time one came back into the shop they would just grab a new one in the box to give to the customer and put the old one out the back for spares, or in the bin - how I got my freebies... We had customers swearing they were running 1800w circular saws on these things, and then a few months later they were complaining the genset was no good and their saw had blown up too, couldn't understand that the alternator output was virtually solid square wave and both that and the saw windings were getting cooked every moment they were overloading things... Happy to have sold off mine, good for task lighting but not for anything with a motor that you care about. Trying to get the voltage up just made the hertz get way too high and out of range. That's possibly why the drill is not running well, too far out of the frequency range... Cheers from Oz.

That was the best comedy skit to date! Blocking diodes! - On the rotor! There are usually two blocking diodes which are there to decisively switch the polarity of the rotor. If the generator is overloaded, the diodes (one or both) will fail. All you have left then is the residual magnetism to build up the voltage, but it is weak, and cannot built up the full voltage, as you observed. The diodes can be replaced, with a bit of jiggery-pokery. There are several variants of this machine, so be aware to disassemble first to be sure that; A, it uses blocking diodes, and B, that they are accessible to replace them. There may also be a large capacitor, depending on the variant of generator, which can also fail and may need replacement. We have a "Generator 900" version, with a more conventional looking gen-end that has the louvred end cover plate. When the generator is working correctly, the engine should immediately pick up the load and its exhaust note should smooth out. These machines are cheap, but if used within manufacturers spec, they are quite capable of doing a day's work without issue.

jacking up the engine speed till you get the proper voltage is completely wrong. The speed should be 3750 RPMs which translates to 62.5 HZ no load. That is the fastest the engine should be running. Ideally you should be getting anywhere from 110 to 125 volts no load. If you are experiencing low voltage and this is a brushless type generator most likely, then I would suspect either a blown diode in the rotating rectifier assembly and/or a failed capacitor. The good news is the windings are still good in the power head. It can be fixed!

I love my little tail gator I put over 100 hours on it in a few months I haven’t even had it for a full year. I got it used after it sat at my uncles house for years and I got it running with pliers and a broom bristle. I turned the screw in till a little over 4,000 rpm because you need a smooth rpm to prevent blowing light bulbs. If you only use it for power tools you don’t need to but I run lights at the cabin and need them to not flicker cause it’s annoying so I bumped the rpm up to smooth out the engine. I also quit using the fuel tank it comes with and rigged an old tecumseh tank to it cause the metal one leaked. I love that it’s a 2 stroke be it smells good. Just don’t run TVs I blew 2 of them up but it’s fine to charge phones and run radios and lights. It’s easy to clean the carb and exhaust port. I put an NGK BP8ES it’s way better than the torch plug it comes with. The governor kinda sucks if you have a light load on it the rpms waver but under a good load they stay the same. I get like 4 1/2 hours to the gallon at 50:1 with a quality oil usually Maxima Formula K2 or Reverend Freedom Roast. I just run 87 octane with Ethanol doesnt hurt the engine non. I’ll definitely buy more of these when my engine wears out someday cause I love this unit. It’s only broken down on me a few times all I did was pop the bowl off and spray carb cleaner up the main jet and ran just fine after that. Always starts after a couple pulls and only smokes while warming up it runs perfectly. It’s very quiet I’d rate this machine at a 6/10 it would be better if it wasn’t Chinese with those crappy Chinese electrical components. I always start it and let it warm up for a few minutes before I plug anything in. If you don’t have one of these I strongly recommend that you get one cause they’re great. They make so many of these generators under different names and colors.

I like my garbage/curb shopping freebies, 2 years ago a 2 cycle hedge trimmer, no spark, someone adjusted the coil, the gap was big enough to fit an a nickle (coin) in. Cleaned it all up still starts 3rd pull when I need to use it once a year, Last year I picked a 4 cycle weed trimmer with the changeable shaft, carb kit, fuel line and filter and a new spool and bump head. Runs amazing This year a mcculloch blower/vac, with the tubes and bag, the kill switch was broken and the ground wasn't making contact. And I was covered in 2 cycle dirt and packed full of leaf dust and pine needles. Starts 3rd pull on a cold start. I got a snow blower 3 yrs ago, wasn't a freebie but was used 1 season and parked in a shed for 16 years, it looks like new. Tossed the carburator for an ebay aftermarket, new plug, new belts, fuel line, filter, and shut off, tubed the tires, new knobs for the choke and throttle and a new chute cable, cleaned and greased everything up and its running like new. It's simple common sense.

I still have that same generator since I hate throwing things away. It was garbage from day 1. I've actually had 3 of them. The first one wouldn't start no matter what. The second kind of started, but only if you squirted gas down the spark plug hole. The one I have now kind of starts, but only when it is warm out, and only after 20-30 pulls. You can put gas or starting fluid right in it, it will not start for 20-30 pulls. It has been in the corner ever since. At least they were only $60 then, with free tape measure too. The sad thing is Harbor Freight used to sell a nearly identical generator that was blue. I had one that ran and ran for years. The generator part finally gave out eventually. It was the greatest for ice fishing or hunting camp, that thing would start in -10F in 2 pulls no problem. Now the only option is 4 stroke generators, and even with 0w-20 oil they will not start when it is below 0. The oil is just too thick to pull it over. 2 strokes are way better in the extreme cold.

Just happened to see the power head of a Troybuilt string trimmer sticking out of a new looking Troybuilt string trimmer box... Being a curious little guy...I stopped...went to the box...and to my amazement...there was a brand new trimmer in the box. Took it home and for a few weeks it sat before I got a chance to look at it...when I did... I noticed there was something dark in the fuel tank...it was straight two cycle oil. I drained it and put the dino-cocktail in and gave a few tugs...fired right up. I've had it for about seven years now...best trimmer I never bought. I've never bought a leaf blower,chain saw,or weed eater...or any other type of outdoor type of tool sence I've been in the trash business... Love you guys and what you do..keep up the awesome job.

A common problem with those generators is the outer armature bearing spinning in the housing. It allows the armature to run off balance and the slipring brushes are then allowed to bounce off the slipring. it causes low voltage output and erratic poor regulation. It's and easy fix with some Loctite shaft fit on the bearing, or replace it if it's worn excessively.

I know it has become common for folks to say 2 cycle engine and I’m OK with that. What bugs me, though, is that manufacturers write it on the product or box. It is a cycle engine. Engines can complete the cycle in 2 strokes or in 4 strokes. But they are not 2 cycle or 4 cycle engines. Intake, compression, combustion, exhaust (suck, squeeze, bang, blow) Is the cycle. Great video. Love the channel. Just my pet peeve for the day.

How in the hell does Taryl not have atleast a million viewers. His show is hilarious and very informative. I could easily see this show become of a TV show of yesteryear. Id rather have Taryl Dactyl be a celebrity then some of the lame brains they put out these days. Taryl would give Tim the tool man a run for his money.

I've got one of these, had it for years. Its blue but exactly the same. Rated 900 running watts but, funny enough, they all have a range of ratings. Have seen some at high as 1200w, lol. I use it to run my sump pump during rainy outages. Run TruFuel in it and it AWAYS starts. Gives me time to decide if the outage will be long enough to fire up the big genset. Ugly power, but the sump pump don't care. Also, need to replace the cheap chinese plug with an NGK...makes a world of difference.

Mine was bought before they were called TailGator, it looks like the same machine. I intentionally run low amp drills around 4.5 amps on it. When it was running and I pulled the drill's trigger the little bugger immediately ran faster on it's own, worked fine even with spade bits. I let it sit for several years and it won't start. That's why I'm watching this.

I have the older model of this generator, the StormCat, which I bought in 2015. I like it because it is very small and lightweight, and because it's 2T, maintenance is minimal. That said, its fuel economy and power quality do leave a bit to be desired. Having used the generator for several years, I have some experience that will be useful here. First, it "ran and died" because you didn't leave the choke on long enough. Leave it at full choke for 15-30 sec, then SLOWLY open the choke. Some people also cover the hole in the choke plate to make it easier to start. The gas cap doesn't seal, even when brand new, so the gas goes stale very quickly. Either use it up or drain the tank to avoid problems. I have made it easier to drain the tank by running fuel line around the side with a fuel filter in the middle (the only factory fuel filter is the screen under the gas cap). I take the line off the fuel filter and drain the tank back into the can. I also shut it down by closing the fuel valve and letting the carb run out of gas, which has given me 7 years of no carb problems. Adjusting the output voltage is a two step process: adjust the no-load voltage with the idle screw on the carb, then load the generator with about 400W and adjust the governor. It transitions from idle screw to governor at around 100W. You will likely have to repeat this a couple iterations before the voltage settings repeat.

Those specific generators, clones of an original yamaha, have a 10 mcF (for 230V models) motor capacitor on the exciter winding that sets the output voltage. Motor should or course run at 3600 rpm. When that cap loses capacitance, the voltage deteriorates like that. This is not a generator with an AVR where you can set voltage on a potentiometer. No brushes on the rotor, as it is a self-exciting type...

Listen Well, you COULD look into the electronics part of this generator. Life doesn't stop at the exhaust pipe. Maybe a volt meter, current meter...cheap oscilloscope to view the output sine wave. Check for burned circuit parts, bad connections, bad wires. Its usually simple stuff. Dang man, find somebody that knows about electronics and see if you can learn something else. When I was young (15 in 1976) and somebody gave me something to fix, it was already broken so I knew I could not make it worse, so I took it apart and looked at stuff. Amazing how many things I fixed without knowing how they worked. After all, WE are here to LEARN from you, Mr. Taryl! I would take that thing apart so fast and roll my eyeballs around on it just to see what it looked like! - Retired Software Engineer 10.12.2022

Don't know if anyone else has said anything but I believe you have to adjust the screw under 95% full load. You cant just adjust it with no load. Also its hard to tell but the filter should be slotted in already. Airflow is drawn from the left side, goes through the filter then enters the carb on the right. Filter designs vary by models/makes

I was out mowing a few minutes ago and went to go park it for the year and it had no brakes or a brake safety switch, it's a 1996 john deere 325 54 inch deck it had awesome brakes before, all the linkages I seen were moving and had little to no play in them, trans fluid is clean, no metal, runs drives and cuts still with no issues, had to jump the solenoid, asking for help, with a diagram or someone that knows the transmission in and out... trans pulls great still...

it's a brushless generator . low or no voltage at rated speed/frequency is a sign of a weak or bad capacitor. I bought one of these things for camping 18 years ago and it works fine, just hard to start in cold weather.

Their is a small screw on the regulator assymbly that adjust the voltage. it's on back of the generator motor. the engine speed will only increase the hrtz from about 50 to 75 the 3300 rpm is the set for 60 hrtz. the generator is fine just adjust the regulator screw or replace regulator if it won't adjust.

Bass guitarist1985 is on the money. I bet this is a brushed gen end and the slip rings are full of carbon from the brushes. A lot of guys don’t realize that Hz and Rpm are synchronous, just divide the RPM by the number of poles in the gen end to get 60Hz. (3600rpm gen is a 6 pole gen) Small generators need to be adjusted higher 62.5hz to compensate for governor droop due to the small engine’s output not being able to easily compensate for loading easily.

Probably an issue with the voltage regulator, engine seems OK after your dinosaur cocktail. I think the baby just had a little head cold 🙂 I think the best you might get out of it is 6 or 700 watts RMS , ok for a fan and some lights . If your juice is out and that's all you got, its still a great little generator.
