Tarly .... all in all this is a great vid. As a former Ford tech for over 25 years and as now as a small engine tech. The first thing Ford taught me was “Visual Inspect” especially when someone else tried to repair. 2nd was “Wiggle Test” which was not needed in this video. But a lot of so called “Mechanics “ are just parts replacers and would of probably had that entire engine apart and still couldn’t figure it out. This video is excellent for taking your time and figuring out the problem. Also parts can be boxed wrong or made incorrectly. Great vid. Take your time and your experience will figure it out. Your correct on over the phone diag also. It’s hard to diagnose something over the phone without the machine there for you to actually see.

A older friend of mine who taught me everything I know about general contracting and got me going with my own business told me that there's always a better way it's just never right under your nose. His favorite saying was always "gotta MacGyver it!" Anytime I run into an issue I step back, think about it, and I always figure it out. Thats the main reason I like watching your videos, is because you're a lot smarter than your character portrays and you are smart enough to think about everything you do and come up with some purely genius ways of redoing or rethinking your project.

Wow! That’s some good detective work Tarly, I think 95% of people would have never figured this out. You are truly the small engine whisperer! Looked like a great vacation time. Really enjoy the videos, thanks a million for making them, I have learned so much from watching you and your crew. One day I am going to drive up to your shop for a visit, always wanted to, only live in south east Michigan, have dome friends in Terra Houte and Mishawaka, so I sure your somewhere around there, anyway that will be a summer trip, don’t do winters well, in fact just started getting cold here, winter is upon us, and I hate it already. Always said I was going to move someplace warm, but that is not going to happen for at least another 10 years when I am finally hopefully going to retire. Sure you’ll be close to the same spot in your life, but I’m sure jr will be the doctor by then. Ok, have a great weekend. As always, love the videos, keep them coming, your hard work is truly greatly appreciated! Cheers from Wyandotte Michigan!

That's the problem when you buy parts anymore. There not like the originals. It's the same in vehicle's also. You just have to look closely at what you get. Great video. Sometimes it's better just to make your own gaskets if you can from the original that you take off. Just like the last video where thay didn't fit right it's can be problems and just hard to get together. But keep the videos coming I love them. You all do a great job in making them.

Speaking of a junky generators, a friend brought one over some time ago. Said it fell out of the pickup truck on the highway and won't make proper voltage after that. A whole lot of figuring stuff out later turned out that the hit was so strong that the engine shifted on the mounts and rammed the governor arm into something, bending it up. That kept tension on the throttle plate and won't let the engine rev. That, in turn, would not let the generator part of it kick in and generate power. So about two days later it was a simple two minute fix. Still amazed that the thing actually survived the tumble. That framework on the outside really saved it.

I remember I had a GX390 that would do the same thing. The previous owner took it somewhere and had them work on it. Ended up being that they forgot a gasket between the isolator block. Pretty sure the one you had put on was for a GX390 as well as that gasket.

Nice work Taryl. One question would be what was causing the problem for the customer when it first started. Anyway, the air leak was probably coming from the bottom of the assembly as it took a while for the spray to keep the motor running when you were spraying on top.

DIY can be great BUT you must beware of bad parts and be ready to compare them. Taryl, you taught me to compare gaskets even if they are allegedly a compatible part. Maybe there was a packaging error and they put the wrong one in the package labeled with the correct part number. There is a number of things that could have gone wrong. I would make sure that I can return the parts when this happens. I am obviously not going to run out to the store just to return one gasket unless it was expensive, if it was just a couple dollars or something I would just put it out in the car with the receipt somewhere I can find it quick. That way I can return it if I go anywhere that is near the parts store. I would also have to send some pictures of the two gaskets to the manufacturer to let them know that there is something wrong and they need to look into it. They would be side by side, with the factory one labeled in the photo and then a separate one showing the mismatch.

one of the old tricks to find a vacuum leak on engines is to spray carb cleaner around any seams in the manifold to find the leak. When the spray hits the leak area, the engine will pick up speed and run better. Then you pinpoint the leak. Good tip!

Some GX340's are actually GX390's just detuned with a smaller carb. You have to look at the stamp on the block of the engine to see which version you have. Whether that be a true 337cc(aka gx340) or 389cc(aka gx390). That will tell you what parts to buy! Most aftermarket companies don't distinguish between the too so it's up to the repairman to figure that out.

this is similar to a go-kart GX390 engine i got my hands on, people before me had no luck starting it, but as i figured out after two days of scratching my head i started port-matching, and apparently they tried fitting a gx340 carb - which made it leak air in the same manner.
