As Rocky said I'm not the one to have come up with the idea, there are people far smarter than me that have been thinking about the route for this game for a long time! There are two instances I'm aware of where it kinda-sorta-almost happened, but this demo is the first to successfully fully pull it off. - Another TASer, xepop, came very close to managing the jump in an abandoned full game TAS. They apparently made the distance, got the right angle, but *barely* didn't manage to land on the ledge at the other side. Without having seen the demo I'm assuming that they briefly touched the platform but had too much momentum in a direction away from it, so then they were thrown off it on the next frame. - Another TASer, Vita, managed the trick but using a custom edited map and running with turbo speeds. Turbo speed allows you to get the speed I got with a rocket boost simply by running, and by editing the map they could manually place a cacodemon in the exact right spot for them to wallrun against it. In this way they proved to me that, ignoring the uncomfortable fact that you need to mess with manipulating the position of multiple enemies while timing your firing and running correctly, it WAS theoretically possible to actually pull of.

0:11 strafe glide... Didn't know that was possible. 10:37 using that lost soul to aim at the icon is genius.
@almostmatt1tas Жыл бұрын
Interestingly, in a TAS setting diagonally running actually significantly increases your likelihood of finding input combinations that can result in an instant glide. Being able to define a forward movement value, a sideways movement value and turning value gives you significantly more potential locations to end up in when compared to just moving straight forward and turning. Most of the time, including this particular instance, TASes can get glides efficient enough to actually gain speed as you do them. :) Totally different situation non-TAS, of course!

It's always so scary watching TAS runs. It makes one feel, as a human player, that one is completely overshadowed by the machine's efficiency and effectiveness. At the same time, though it is indeed a person controlling the machine, it operates in such a radically inhuman way that it's hard to discern this; instead, in practice it looks like it's a fully artificial consciousness, playing the game. Very creepy.

Thank you! :) With the currently known strategies and routes I think mid/high 9:3x would be possible, anything lower than 9:35 would start to quite surprise me. The biggest question for me is how much faster the map 29 jump can be done, I honestly have no idea, but it can absolutely be done faster and I believe that that's the biggest variable in estimating a truly optimal time.

Fantastic work!! This has probably been asked already but how did you kill icon in 2 rockets? High dmg rolls?
@rocky472512 жыл бұрын
Rocket splash damage isn't rng based - it's just the distance of the target and the explosion, meaning you can get both rockets to deal maximum splash damage to the icon, killing it in two rockets.
@DuckReconMajor2 жыл бұрын
@@rocky47251 thx Rocky!

Thanks! And yeah, what Rocky said :) I first saw it in Zero Masters Nightmare TAS. I believe he was the first to actually do it, but termrork was apparently the one to theorise using Lost Souls to autoaim rockets to the hole in the Icon of Sin.

That trick is one of the most amazing things I've seen in Doom, and I watch a lot of TAS runs.

@Olek543212 жыл бұрын
This is incredibly satisfying, perfect moves all the time :D What happened in map 7 Dead Simple? How that exit worked? and map 30 how did you hit Icon of sin? Or maybe I shouldn't ask -> MAGIC that's all
@almostmatt1tas2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! :) It's possible to get into a very precise position and press a switch from the left side of it, from further away than you're normally able to press a switch. On the last frame of map 7, the switch I'm facing isn't actually the one I press, it's the one facing to the right. It's possible non-TAS but a TAS is able to do it instantly. The trick is also done in 4 other maps. In map 30, I manipulate luck so that the Icon Of Sin spawns a Pain Elemental. When they then fire a Lost Soul towards me, I shoot a rocket towards the Lost Soul. If I do it right, autoaim kicks in and angles the rocket very slightly upwards towards the exposed brain of the IOS while still missing the Lost Soul.

@rocky472512 жыл бұрын
Pretty much, but because the other wall is also diagonal it requires a very precise position to get into while building momentum. The trick was found by Zero Master, who has a great explanation of it in his video showcasing the trick. Here’s the link kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHqQhJ6vqpadr6s
