@@AnteGV1950 tool assisted Speedrun/super play. It's a run made with emulator tools, to simulate what a god would be able to do with a controller in hand. Everything is theoretically possible, but not for a human, while it's not "real" gameplay, it involves a different skillset, more about knowing the inner workings of a game and programming a set of inputs that will produce interesting results.

"YOINK!" is an onomotopaeia that stems from 1940s cartoons. It's the sound effect made in many classic cartoons. It was especially used in Hanna-Barberra cartoons such as The Flintstones and The Jetsons. It was the sound effect used when something was snatched up or moved quickly. As far as I know, the earliest use of "yoink" as a verb was in the Simpsons, often when a character would sheepishly yank something out of the hands of someone else. They would say "yoink" in place of the sound effect.

This blows my mind even as a casual SMB3 player. Can't imagine being an active speedrunner watching it. It'd be like toiling every day for months and finally benching 400 pounds only to have an android stroll in with an arrogant gait, one-arm-curl 500 pounds 10 times and then backflip out the door.

Shutter speed reminds me of Speed Booster quickcharge in Super Metroid as despite the different executions, it's ultimately the same idea for both of them: Checks to build up P-Speed and Speed Booster only happens on certain frames while you can take it slower between the frames.

You starting statement isn't really 100% accurate: Every 8th frame the check for your P-Meter is done. If the speed is 40 or more and you are on the ground, an arrow will build up on your P-Meter, then after 8 frames it will check again. During those frames inbetween, it's indeed possible to decrease your speed a bit and then build it up again. Optimally, this is the speed you'll have for each of those 8 frames: 40, 38, 36, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40. Making it that you can decrease your distance with up to 21 subpixes (1 pixel + 5 subpixels) for each P-Meter arrow. If you have P-speed, you can only corner boost if you duck. The example at the end of 1-1 was not a corner boost at all. You can only save max 1 pixel from such boost, but most of the time we have to delay a bit to do it, making it not worth it for a lot of the boosts in the game. Same comes with the corner clips we do through blocks. While it does save 2 pixels without having to slow down, Mario isn't always lined up correctly to do it. We often slow down briefly to get such clips, though in many cases we have to slow down more than it saves. Anyway: Continue :D

If you fail the wand grab and grab it later, so that Mario won't screen wrap and actually fall, then you'll indeed lose time. But if it's done the way in the TAS it's always faster.

What he mean is that the route the TAS does can't really be done without the Wing, because of the flight timer that starts as soon as you jump. Obviously, if you build up the P-Meter later and do a later jump, you can get up with a leaf.

Ok I never understood any fire kills in this game. How many fireballs count as a hit? And what about bouncing on him at the end with boom boom here @17:42 for a reference?

You need five fireballs to kill a Boom Boom. Stomping has, in a way, it's own HP counter and can't be combined with the fireballs to do more damage. So either 5 balls, or 3 stomps. We usually stomp in order to be close to him so that the final ball hits as early as possible.

I grew up playing smb1-3 til 7or 8 years, then world after getting my snes in 95? always felt like I had seen (and maybe just in remakes or other games but relating it to this game…) fireballs reaching a certain point to cause ONE of the three hits you would need to stomp on. And now I can’t tell if it is just going be shit I have seen in Mario maker or something but since I am not super into that game it projected some game mechanics back in to my old faves lmao. how much closer could runners get if by adding another couple of buttons that your feet could use. (it's not technically a valid run, but against a TAS). Could stutter step be more consistent (I'm thinking like a bass drummer with 1 bass pedal vs 2)
