Dear Matt, I've heard rumors that the jump power has a tiny element of randomness, some guy on steam said he tested it with a macro even. But like, TAS runs wouldn't be possible if that were the case, I thought. So I guess my questions are: a) Is this TAS a program that can tell where the character is, or is it just a program that holds down keys for a certain amount of time? b) If it just holds down keys for a certain amount of time, was this run your first try with this specific TAS, or did you develop it and then have to spam it out until the rng was good? TLDR: Does jump power have any randomness? I figure you'd know.

This is a TAS like any you would see for older console games. It directly controls the inputs seen by the game each frame and plays them back, unlike a macro which attempts do this but since its not connected to the game directly your inputs may get out of sync. Jump King is fully deterministic as far as I've seen, meaning each time I play it back I get the same results.

@@hawler7866 Year old comment, but yes, I suppose it would be even more impressive if a player did something humanly impossible. Just like it would impressive for someone to get up and just start flying. People who make TAS speedruns study the game extensively and have an extraordinary grasp on very specific game mechanics some of which is humanly impossible to achieve. Nobody is capable of doing the inputs themselves, that's why it's tool assisted. The person still tells the tool everything it needs to do and exactly when to do it and if it isn't timed properly it wouldn't make any sense. It isn't like an AI is playing the game and making calculations, a human has to set up ALL inputs or make scripts to help them do so, and usually spend hours fine tuning it to achieve the absolute shortest possible time within the limitations of the game. That's why it's so impressive, regardless of whether someone does the inputs themselves (they can't) or not.

This one actually is a computer, 'TAS' means "Tool-Assisted Speedrun", which generally means either a computer is playing the game or the game is slowed down to such an extent that the player may as well be a computer.
