TAS: Super Mario Bros. 3 "Total Control" by Lord Tom

This movie uses a glitch and input from the NES controllers to reprogram new features into Super Mario Bros. 3 -- while playing it! To emphasize, this is not a hacked version -- this is all performed using the original, unmodified game.
A slightly modified version of this movie was shown at Awesome Games Done Quick 2016, played by TASBot using an unmodified Nintendo and SMB3 cartridge and with an appearance by SMB3 world champion Mitch: • Video

OMG I was laughing so hard at all the glitchiness going on. First the color a dinosaur, then Mario suddenly learning how to shinespark. Then shell shield and glitched up suits. Then 6:15 - man Bowser, did your tanks get screwed up or something? XP Then Mario defying gravity... Very entertaining to say the least

lol when I was younger and first discovered that you get a full inventory of P-wings after you beat the game if you start again without resetting. I didn't know that was how they appeared, I discovered them when getting the first warp whistle and I was flabbergasted. I thought that I had discovered some amazing glitch. I was even able to recreate it several times, but not every time I played (obviously lmao). It took years for me to finally learn how they really got there

It was the RAM that was being edited. (In case you are not tech savvy, it RAM is what the programs use as storage for saving stuff until the device is turned off or the RAM is overwritten)

How did the TAS's inputs make the game display all of those letters in the fake Shigeru SMB3 backdoor message?

Basically there's a glitch that allows you to run any code you want via sprite positions. Using that you can make a "bootloader" that runs code using controller inputs. The game runs at 60fps and the TAS isn't restricted from left+right/up+down, so basically it can input 8*60=480 bits (60 bytes/letters) every frame. That's pretty fast.
