Well, when doing a Wrong Warp, it's possible to force code execution to go to where the controller bytes are.. All a Wrong Warp is, is using entity position values as a jmp instruction to another part of execution. By jumping it to the controller data indicating what button is being pressed, it allows the ability to change byte values to create Assembly code. Allowing for some pretty neat cheats.

For those of you who don't know, TAS is a machine that is able to play any game it us programmed to and input any button pushes necessary to exploit incredibly difficult glitches like those shown off in this run. All of the glitches could hypothetically be performed by a person, but that person would have to be perfect in all ways and have more than 2 arms. So, possibly a Hindu goddess or an octopus god. All of this is also possible on the original cartridges for the games it plays.

Guys... all a mix of right and wrong. The game itself is 100% stock SMB3, unmodified cartridge. The only thing attached is a controller emulator that runs a script of pre-determined button presses at the exact right times in the game (to match with an emulator that it was developed with). This is the result of many months of tinkering to find the exact right sequence and time of buttons to push. The "arbitrary code execution" IS a thing, and it's done during the level 7-1 "wrong warp" glitch - which allowed him to input buttons on port #2 and input a "boot loader" that let him write custom code to be executed all throughout the later part of the play - all stored in the NES' tiny amount of RAM. The "Loading..." segments are also additional series of button-pushes to load more code - done so rapidly it just seems like "loading" to the viewer.

I think people over exaggerate Dark Souls's difficulty, And those same people get mad when some say it's not as tough as they think. I've actually completed multiple challenge runs, including: Lvl 1, No items, Fist Weapons Only, No Bonfire, and even No Death runs, respectively. All you have to do is practice. I used to be terrible at those games, (never mind that I was twelve when I first played Dark Souls, on release. After Sif, I had no idea where to go, and just gave up for a long time) and I just practiced until I finally was able to do a Lvl 1 run, and proved to myself that I could do it, given enough effort. In short; it's never too tough, just try. (Also, God Hand is -way- harder, especially if you're doing the Arena. Double God Hand Gene is the bane of my everything. :) )

For anyone curious on how this works: TASBot goes to 7-1 because this one has a very powerful glitch called the "Wrong Warp". When you enter the Pipe, Mario goes beyond the intended level data and interprets other data as level data. In this data, there is data for a glitched note block that when hit, executes the x-Values of enemies as code, that's why TASBot messes around with the shells for so long before entering the pipe, it needs to get them into pixel-perfect positions. Specifically, the "shell-code" is a bootloader for taking the inputs of the controllers and turning them into code that it writes into unused memory, thus TASBot is basically able to write its own code and execute it. That is also why one of the TASers answer on if this is humanly possible is "How many frame-perfect inputs can you do on 2 controllers at once?", because that is what TASBot does when the screen glitches out after Mario exits the glitched pipe and hits the glitched note block.

It's a reference to Super Metroid, where some animals are trapped in a room, and towards the end of the game you have an option to save them before you destroy the ship and beat the game. If you don't they'll get blown up together with the ship. And in these GDQ-events it's the donators that decide whether the animals should be saved or left to die, whichever option has gotten the most money wins.

Basically, after using the ACE glitch to download a custom bootloader (written using Koopa shell x-coordinates) onto the NES during the wrong warp, the TASbot could download any code it wanted onto the NES using the controller input. In the case of the 8-Tank1 glitch, the code in question allowed the player to force the screen to scroll in a desired direction. So, basically, you just have to convert a bunch of assembly instructions into bytes and then into controller inputs, and then enter one of those bytes in on every consecutive frame, including pushing L+R at the same time on some frames. OTOH, by using a different strategy, you could probably write a different bootloader that would be more suitable for RTA use, similar to the technique used to write Flappy Bird into SMW.

No, actually it's a RAM hack instead, the ROM is the original, but they inject their own code into RAM trough manipulating positions of sprites on the screen to get desired values in specific RAM addresses, after which they do a glitch that sands an execute instruction to those addresses, hence running their code. Once their code is ran, they can keep injecting more code using all controlers inputs etc. The actual explanation is much more technical than this, but this is the shortest layman explanation I can give that could make sense. Basically, they are programming the console in real time.
