Yes, the 2 inserts are only for those two channels. Those same two channels also feature "instrument" inputs with High Impedance. The first 8 inputs all include Compression that is routed pre-recorder. The EQ, sends and pan are post record of course.

Great review. I think you touched on a lot of things that I would consider when making this type of purchase. Your pros and cons were pretty on point. If you’re looking for another mixer in this space, I would suggest the Zoom Livetrak l-20. There are upsides and downsides vs the Tascam. You’ve inspired me to make a longer form review on that one. If I ever get it finished, I’ll link back to this one. It improves on a couple of the issues you had with the Tascam, but brings in a few more. It’s also a digital mixer so it a shared channel strip. I got mine for a rehearsal setup and the Tascam had just come out around the time I purchase the Zoom mixer, and I needed more monitor mixes than I could get from the Tascam. I haven’t been hands on with the Tascam 16, so I can’t really speak to the quality comparison. From what you said, it seems like the Tascam is a bit more robust. I’d say check out the specs and let me know how you think it compares. I know the cost is a bit higher, but it does give you a few different options.

I've used my Tascam Model 24 in all settings: live as a stand alone mixer, a recorder (recording live performances), as well as sending audio from my DAW to the board. I don't mind that I can not control the DAW per say with the board like the Model 12, but I like how I can "Print" a Mix back into the DAW with actual panning and volume automation that I can do on the Board. My only gripe is I wish there was a bit more option to use Outboard gear as there are only two insert channels if I wanted to incorporate that but I bought the board mainly to record live performances or rehearsals. Great overview!

Good, informative video. I have the Model 12. I think MTR is Tascam’s abbreviation for “multi-track”. But I think of it as “monitor” for playback from the SD card as you said. The mystery to me is why there isn’t a way to record with the built-in FX on the track. I use the Bluetooth audio on the mixer to receive my backing track on my iPad which is running OnSong. No problems so far.

A long winded way would be to play just the track you want the effect on and record main out (aka ch 11/12). Then swap either 11 or 12 back to any mono channel (or both to stereo 7/8 or 9/10). (p47 in manual)

**ANOTHER FEATURE** I have the Model 24 with the foot switch. One feature I wish Tascam would add (I have suggested) is the option of starting and stopping while RECORDING with the foot switch. I play the Drums and by placing the foot switch next to my right foot (which I do for start and pause play back,) I could have the option to record as well, instead of turning around and doing it that way. Just for convenience.

In the end I created a song and choose 48000/24, then it worked fine for general monitoring.

Yeah, they're great! I've been eyeing the model 24 too....
@matt_nyc_audioengineer Жыл бұрын
@@CatoNoise The nice part about the 24 is it's 100% analog signal path. I know the 12 is 100% digital after the pre amp. Not sure about the 16, but I think it's digital as well. Maybe the compressor is analog? Not sure. I mix professionally and do live sound on the side so once I saw the capabilities of the console it was a no brainer! First show I did with it the actors (I'm in NYC, I work a lot of tech for theater companies) and the producers asked right away what was different. They even heard the quality difference. For the price the entire Model line is a steal. I know some people have issues with the built in MTR (Multi Track Recording) processing but from what I have heard it's only when you overload the system by pressing the transport controls too fast. I haven't used that particular feature yet but I do intend to. As long as you don't try to rush it I've heard they are quite stable. Thanks for making the video these consoles don't get enough screentime!
@sub-jec-tiv9 ай бұрын
Yeah, i think the limitations are for 2 reasons. 1, to keep the price point attractive, and; 2, since people are meant to use this unit for recording, and use it as a very basic live mixer.. then for the finishing work, do the heavy lifting like specific sculpting EQ and effects work in the box.

Yay! Awesome review, Cato! Great sounding little board. Just wondered - when it records, can/does it record pre compression and EQ? 💚
@matt_nyc_audioengineer Жыл бұрын
It records with compression only. You can mixdown and use the EQ but the EQ does not affect the recording. Same way it works when recording to tape. The signal flow works exactly like it's laid out. So where the switch is to select the different modes is the cutoff point for recording. So high pass and compression only when recording MTR or to your DAW. Hope this helps!
@yolhanson9 ай бұрын
You can record with EQ, Comp, FX, PAN coming through your headphones. And you can hear and adjust them in playback (in MTR mode). That's how you work out what to do when you get to the mix-down stage: what to pull up, down, adjust.

Very nice job. A few comments. Not all ribbon mics are alike. I have a pair of Bumble Bee SM-7's, and they have built in FET preamps that require phantom power. I use these to mic my wife's grand piano for her classical work, along with a couple of condensers in my own setup design that really captures the live performance and the range of note frequencies of a grand. Next, that switch label "MTR" is not for "meter". It stands for "multi-track recorder", meaning the source is coming from the SD card in the recorder section. Have you tried the Model 12? I understand it is partially digital, and I don't know if that affects the compression quality.
@wildcherriesband Жыл бұрын
Hi Cato, Great review on the Tascam 16 hybrid mixer. I hope I was not annoying you too much when I was trying to correct your EQ on the live stream, if so I am sorry. You can see by the live stream feed how muffled the low end was, luckily people watching on phones didn't hear much of that due to the phone speakers response. I didn't know your setup then (mic in front of a speaker) or I would have suggested that you raise the phone (mic) on a mic stand or something to horn level as to not pick up as much of the woofer. Then the board EQ wouldn't have to dip and effect the recording file. Love your channel, keep up the good work ---- Dennis
@CatoNoise Жыл бұрын
Hey man, thanks! And no worries. Honestly, the live stream was the lowest priority this night. I had to prioritize the recording and the live audio for all the people that were physically there. Before that, I had wasted some time trying to stream from a GoPro attached to a Rode mic, which kept disconnecting. I figured it was still worth doing though (got some feedback from people saying they'd still like to see the stream, even if it's from a cell phone). So, I still set up the cell phone. I literally had to ask friends to tape the phone to a space heater to get the phone that was live-streaming into position. It's not that I couldn't think of better setups, it's that I didn't have time and it wasn't high on the priority list.

Thanks! I have the Model 12, and I'm having a hard time getting it to do a count in, so that it doesn't just start recording. I like a little bit of a lead in. Nothing I do, fixes it.
@yolhanson9 ай бұрын
Record a click-track from a phone or computer, for the length of the song. Decide early on how many beats you want as a count-in. Keep that track there for as long as you can before you need the track for something else, by which time you probably have the main instruments coming in. Alternatively, have a click intro on an instrumental track, but leave enough space to cut it out when editing in your DAW (which most people do). In a 4/4 intro, it might be click-rest-click-rest/click-click-click-rest/play. There are many ways around this; you might have to be a little creative.

Thanks for this informative video! I'm an old school ((clears throat)) analog guy and haven't been quite able to warm up to the digital realm of the DAW... My last attempt was during 2020 lockdown, I purchased a Tascam 208i interface which seems to work reasonably well (once I got it "mapped" correctly 🙄) Being drawn to the "hands-on" approach of physical knobs and faders of the Model series, and given that I like that the 12 has MIDI ports and USB-C, my question is this: Could I link my 208i interface to the Model 12 for more channels if the need presented itself? I have not purchased yet, and am considering either the Model 12 or 16... and possibly the Mackie ProFX16v which has USB and effects, but no on-board recording to an SD card... but seems to have more routing capabilities and features for both live and recording scenarios... Any input (pardon the pun😐) would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Marshall R. Stevensville, MD (guess where I work!?😉🎸)

Another comment. To avoid need for direct boxes, the model 16 has hi z for only two channels while the 12 has it on all 12. I'm struggling with which to get. I'm old school, still using my Akai DPS 16 for recording, not live mix, but getting the music out of that is a PITA and pretty much intended for CD final product. It records at 24, but can only get it out at 16 bits for CD quality, and the backup tracks are 24, but can't upload them at 24. I think the Akai DPS 24 addressed this, but it's still ancient tech. While the Akai will do live mix, it's much more cumbersome and needs external compressors, etc. Also, I want to add live / recording in one, more compact, easier to use device, and being able to DAWless record to SD with all the tracks plus the stereo mix is very appealing.
@jameshendee44896 ай бұрын
I made my choice a couple ways... the Model 12 uses a wall-wart kind of laptop kind of power supply (which IMHO always fail, so plan to buy an extra one while they are still new and in production)... the Model 16 uses a standard IEC connector (no wall-wart thing)... the Model 12 has all the inputs on the BACK of the device, which means every time you plug something in you have to stand on your head or leave enough room behind it to walk behind and see what you are plugging in... the Model 16 has all the inputs top mounted... I went with the Model 16

I have been using my Model 12 for a few years now and it works just fine. I did go thru the "Faulty Power Switch" issue and Tascam sent me a replacement... piece a cake...problem solved. All my stuff is DAW in my home studio. The main and only reason I got this unit was for the USB-C I/O cable to my DAW. I recently built a new computer specifically with a Thunderbolt MB but the only units that to date use this I/O are UA and they're "REALLY" proud of their stuff! So the Model 12 was the next closest thing. But...if they have put the USB-C port on the Model 16 I would have gotten it because I would like more channels. So there's that.

Or... why when you play the ProTools version does it come to life and not sound dull? Why does the video version have such a drastic fallout of the high frequencies?
@CatoNoise5 ай бұрын
I think the video version in this video was from a cell phone live stream, if I'm remembering correctly. So we are comparing that cell phone version to the version recorded through the sound board, before going out the speakers and into a cell phone. I'm guessing the high frequencies are because cell phone mics tend to be fairly unforgiving in that way. I also like to mix things fairly warm. Hope that helps! LMK what you think.

We are a small 3-man band (acoustic guitar, electric guitar and cajon that uses a few digital effects) and use the Model 16 for live shows - about 2 a month. The last few shows, a few people have mentioned our sound is "muddled". We set the gain at the suggested, optimal level, then set our channels at about halfway to avoid clipping. Should we use the mid-cuts on each channel, increase the highs/lows and cut the mids on each channel or use the master eq to do the same? Any suggestions or guidance? Thanks! Ed

They should hardly call this a 16 channel board. I come from old school recording... and have a Mackie 1604VLZ from way back. Back in the day- 16 channels meant 16 channels period. you got 16 channels with 16 individual XLRs/1/4" inputs. Now they skew the marketing - give you 8 XLRs - give you two 1/4 pairs - for a total of 12- then say because they give you a 1/2" iphone/android input - they count that as 13/14 - and then bluetooth as 15/16. Bunch of useless marketing crap if you ask me. This really strains you in a live enviornment when you end up not having enough channels to mic your drums and then get a subchannel mixer to run into this board. But your review is SPOT ON and awesome. I am just venting about where all the marketing flub has went with these boards. I guess if you want the individual inputs- you need to buy higher end boards. New subscriber by the way.. Great work!!! thanks for sharing.

I have a 414 portastudio Tascam that pretty much gave out on me I had it for 20 years and just as well it quit on me since its such a headache to get cassette tapeS I understand this 16 records to an sd card I can get those I dont have a computer but this could work for me if they are still selling Some of these models are introduced and then obsolete in 3 months🤔

If the mike cable is wired right phantom power doesn't hurt a ribbon mic, I use them all the time with phantom power on
@CatoNoise Жыл бұрын
I think it depends on the microphone. There are some that can handle it nowadays, but I'm not risking it unless it's required in my signal chain. Especially not if it's a vintage mic.

Hello ! I’ve been considering the Model 24 . I am a Drummer and back in the old days I always sun mixed my drums and sent that to FOH , they could tweak as needed. Mostly it was I believe a Mackie 1604 VLZ Pro. So my question … I have a Behringer X32 , which I think is just way too much for just Drums , but I LOVE that I can make 100’s of “drum kits” so I can make the kit perfect for different songs etc. I love the ease of use of Tascam but I cannot SAVE anything . Should I just make each kit into my DAW. ? But then I am chained to a computer. I miss my Roland VS2480HD , totally self contained for mixing and recording AND saving !

Start new song, Move the mode switch to mtr, then arm the desired track(s) using the square above track mute in the channel strip and then press record.

I surmise MTR stands for multi track recording, not meter.

Great video! So just clarifying.. this records 14 channels onto SD card? I’m about to purchase but I want to make sure it can do what I need it for. Thanks!

Yeah, it records to the SD card. The number of tracks it records depends on the model you get, but yeah!

This video is very applicable to the Model 24 (the 24 just being a larger version of this). One difference is the 24 has a 7-band EQ up above the screen. They're all really good gear, whether 12, 16 or 24. They sound great and all EQ is on the board. Not having to scroll through digital menus for EQ settings was the real seller for me. So I bought the 12 and the 24. So many people like the old-school way of mixing and recording (yes, it's digital recording on the SD card), but nearly everything else is knobs and faders. Make a mistake, do a new take (just like the greatest bands did).

Actually one other board I would love an honest review on is the presonus Ar16c desk, I loved it for it's on the fly recording my gigs to the SD card which sounded amazing when played back in the van and home hifi system, but I did not like the sound on stage foh it was putting out and it's effects are only just ok, so I returned the desk back to store, now I'm sorry, but after seeing this review I might just give the tascam a run for it's money, still able to record live gig with SD card but mic pre's and overall ease of use and sound on stage is what matters most to me, so still I'm deciding and wondering what will be my next desk outside of my Dynacord cms 1000...

How much outboard gear can you connect to this if you’re using it as an interface?
@Fuzzfooger Жыл бұрын
It has 2 dedicated aux sends, you can also use the fx channel send as an additional aux send if you dont want to use the internal effects.

So does the tascam record separate tracks to the internal SD card ?
@PedroMiguel-if3ll Жыл бұрын
Of course!, no idea why she was not recording each track separate in these live gigs
@CatoNoise Жыл бұрын
Hi, yes it does! And then you can easily import them into your daw and mix them (that's what I've been doing). And I actually have been recording the tracks separately for the live gigs I do. Sometimes it's only a couple of tracks to actually mix if there's just one mic and one DI box, for example, but yep - that's what I've been doing and it's worked well so far!
@pongtrometer Жыл бұрын
@@CatoNoise great, definitely want to consider this for peace of mind recording rehearsal jam sessions, 5mics on drums, then direct in and mics on respective amps of guitar, bass, keyboards, that always have some gem moments. Much thanks , appreciate the feedback.

@CatoNoise Жыл бұрын
I believe the model 12 does have HUI control with Pro Tools, so you can use it as a control surface, but not the model 16. When I looked into it, it was something about how the 12 design is centered around digital mixer functions, and the 16 and 24 are more analog focused.

@@CatoNoise Typical of Tascam to apply pointless limitations to their gear. I love a lot of Tascam pieces and features but there is always something they do that seems to totally miss market share potential and tie the hands of the user.

@CatoNoise13 күн бұрын
Haha, no way! I'm so sunk into pro tools, there's no hope for me. I did use Reaper years ago as an assistant - they had me processing drums in it, and then exporting for use in pro tools.

@@CatoNoise I still use protools in one of my studios, but i use what in my experience was the last stable version of protools which was 5.1.1 with the digi001 on os9. I have 2 of them. Reaper supports all plugin formats natively, You can use multiple different brand control surfaces simultaneously in reaper. The editing is less clunky. The switch between protools and reaper is very easy compared to other the difference between protools and other DAWs. I don't know if you've tried out the DAW control mode in the tascam but it's really really awesome. The money you would save from switching to Reaper could go toward a road case for the mixer.
