thank you so much for this series of videos. On the first day I got my 414 I was able to record a song, bounce a mixdown to open up more tracks to use. So straightforward and easy to understand.

Hi Dennis, I hope I find you well dear friend. I tried my first bounce on my tascam 488mk1,and I must say it was pretty much lossless in terms of sound quality, and it captured the whole mix with real clarity of tone an no tape hiss whatsoever. I was totally amazed. Keep up your fantastic work my friend. I totally addicted to your channel. Kindest regards. Paul.

hi Dennis, may i point out that in the manual which i studied yesterday, it says that if you want to record or bounce with the R/L pan method, meaning the record mode switch to R/L on the target channel, the pan of the source channel should be all the way to either R/L. with the pan in center you would loose a bit of signal, since the target channel will record either R or L to a track on tape.
@MultitrackCassetteFans3 жыл бұрын
You are right, I get this comment on a regular basis. It never bothered me too much before I made these videos, but I’d stick to this manual advice in future videos
@RosssRoyce9 ай бұрын
If you record bouncing all 3 tracks on track 4 R, then (unless I’m wrong) you should have the pans of tracks 1 2 and 3 panned to the right in terms to get your full signal. On the other extreme, if you pan them to full left, track 4 R will record nothing. In your case they are panned to middle - only half of the recorded signal’s juice is bounced to 4 R. Also, I don’t know why you monitor on cue? I monitor on L/R like this I can adjust different tracks at different mix strength that suits my monitoring, I have a feeling that Cue monitoring ignores the mix sliders. Your vids are very nicely done! Thank you!

Hey, thanks for the videos! I was wondering if it's possible (or smart) to record stereo input into two tracks and then bounce to one? Or will it become mono? I have behringer 2600 synthesizer which has two 6,3 line outs.

Another good demo - thanks. Have you considered doing a comparison video to all the different four tracks you’ve used? I have looked all over for one and so far haven’t found one from any KZbinr reviewing or using cassette four track machines. I’m specifically interested in the dichotomy of the amount of features a unit has vs its innate sound quality relative to other recorders. Thanks again for your videos - please keep up the good work!

Hey I’ve got some questions. Picked this model up a while ago and have had some trouble with recording speed. What I want to know is how I can play the tapes I’ve recorded on a standard cassette player at the speed which it plays on the tascam and which it was recorded as. I’m trying to make tapes for some songs I like. I plug my computer into the tascam and record the songs onto it. Then when I put the cassette into a player it’s all slowed down. The only work around I have found is speeding up the songs through software making them chipmunk sounding and recording that. I can do that but I’d like to learn how to play my songs I record using the tascam on regular tape. I think I need to make a mix down for the master but you don’t cover it. What do you do with your song once it’s finished and mixed so you can listen to it on tape decks.
@MultitrackCassetteFans3 жыл бұрын
This tascam, and many others, runs at double tape speed, to get a better audio quality. So that’s the reason you can’t play tapes recorded on a regular cassette recorder and vice versa. When I mixdown for my videos, I mix down to the stereo input of the usb audio interface, in my case a focusrite scarlett 2i2. But you could also mixdown to a regular cassette recorder

Absolutely love your channel! Quick simple question for you: what kind of cassettes are best for recording on the 414?
@MultitrackCassetteFans5 жыл бұрын
john doe Thank you! It’s best to use Type II cassettes (aka chrome). TDK SA ones are fine, Maxell XLII ones are even better. Use 60min or 90min tapes, never use 120min ones (tape is too thin/weak)

Gonzo6389 These recorders were optimized for use with chrome (type II) cassettes. Metal requires a different optimization. Normal cassettes shouldn’t be a problem, in my opinion, but chrome is best for your tascam. Or fostex, or vestax etc etc

Hey man I just can’t figure out how to record the 4 tracks I recorded into Logic Pro. I only have an rca cable but I can’t figure out where to plug it in like to my interface or what. And I’m reading I might need an interface with more channels? Can I just record all the tracks all at once into logic?
@MultitrackCassetteFans4 жыл бұрын
If you want to mix inside logic, you need a way to transfer all 4 tracks separately and simultaneously to your computer

Can you repeat this process? Say I want to add double-tracked electric rhythm guitar to my "rhythm track" on tracks 2&3 while I have the bass drums and acoustic on track 4, now can bounce that all again to track 1 so I have 3 left for my keys, lead guitar, and vocal?.... Unrelated question and unrelated to bouncing, but what tap types can I use on this and how does tape speed work? Can I record with type IV tapes?
@MultitrackCassetteFans2 жыл бұрын
Yes! You can repeat this process as many times as you like, but keep in mind that every bounce adds an extra amount of tape hiss
@MultitrackCassetteFans2 жыл бұрын
Tascam recommended type II tapes in their manuals, the recorders were optimized for this tape type. You can however use type I tapes. I have no experience with type IV, but I think type IV is too expensive to use on a recorder that’s not made for this. About tape speed: the higher the speed, the more audio fidelity. More magnetic particles particles per second passing, compare it to a higher sample rate in digital audio, more samples per seconds is more precision

Hi Dennis, thank you for posting these videos. i’m supposed to be getting one here soon and this has been really helpful. I also have a question related to the speed of the tapes - I understand it’s recording at double speed for better quality so playing it on a regular cassette will make it sound fast. According to another one of your comments, it seems like you can just play the tape on the tascam, but have your DAW recording it thru your audio interface via the line out (of tascam) and line in (of audio interface). I know online forums aren’t great, but for similar questions some people are saying you will need to use a software to adjust the speed of the recording in the DAW. To me it seems if the tape is playing thru the tascam, the audio interface will just record the tape the way the tascam is playing it, so it will sound normal and not sped up in the DAW, so there is no need for the varispeed software/tool? I’m wondering if you can clear this up for me? Thank you again!
@thecowsaysmoo423 жыл бұрын
sorry, i may have meant it will sound slow down the audio in the regular cassette player, as i still don’t have this yet it can be very confusing without playing around with it haha, hopefully the question still makes sense.
@buzzardsinuses47802 жыл бұрын
Very new to the 4 track. Once you’ve bounced tracks over to a new one, can you bounce more over to it, or are you just stuck with the ones you bounced over?
@MultitrackCassetteFans2 жыл бұрын
You can always bounce a bounced track to another one, this basically without limits. But the thing is, every bounce run adds an extra layer of noise (tape hiss). That is why most people stick with 1 or max 2 runs of bouncing tracks
@marvinbnaylor2 жыл бұрын
Hello and thank you for this. My question: after bouncing tracks 1,2 and3 onto track 4, can you then record on tracks 1 and 2 and bounce them onto track 3, then re-record on tracks 1 and 2 and have a 7 track recording?
@MultitrackCassetteFans2 жыл бұрын
Hi Marvin, thanks for watching. Yes, you can bounce forever, as long as you accept the extra tape hiss that comes with every bounce. If you want, you can check out my video on extreme bouncing: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ap2opn1ngrh3l5Y

Hi, you’re the best. How can I bounce my four tracks of my 414 into a daw? 🙏🏽 I recorded an entire album on my 414 and I want to upload to Spotify. Thanks!
@MultitrackCassetteFans5 жыл бұрын
If you want to record the stereo mix into your daw, then you should connect reverb, delay (if you want) to the EFFECT SENDS of your 414, make your mix, and run the LINE OUT L+R into your daw. You could add an analog compressor and / or EQ between the 414 and the daw. If you don't have a compressor or EQ, use your daw's comp / eq. You can use the stereo input of your daw, or use a usb audio interface. I use a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, which is not too expensive, and the quality is more than I can ask for.

@@bmarr668 you can add effects thru the Portastudio to any 1 track by itself or all 4 at once, even after recording onto the tape. you still may want to leave a track open though so you can re-record something (with the added effect) onto that empty track. that is if you are going all raw, no daw.
