Dude thank you for all these videos. I have been making music for 16 years now, always recorded digitally, composed in DAWs. Recently got into DIY effects/instruments electronics projects, got fascinated by the cassettes of my childhood by watching Hainbach and realizing the unique qualitues and possibikities for manipulation with tape and bought a 424MkIII to record with. Your videos have been a huge help. Best wishes!

The 424 MK3 a masterpiece of design and functionality. I've had mine now for 3 weeks and am loving it. Cassette recording is fun, tactile and the warmth of analogue tape is worth that little bit more background hiss.

424 Recording it's going. Finally recorded 2 instrumental tunes on the 424 and ping ponged 2x on the 2 tunes. I then dumped the tracks into Logic and mixed them down.
I used to bounce down to a external deck through a mixer, then back into the 4 track... Sometimes you record parts during the bounce down process. It was a bit of a fussy process but the quality was a bit better.
@424Recording5 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, I need to try this out. I've always bounced in the 424. I have a deck that would be perfect for this. Recording parts during bounce down is high stakes haha. Thanks for watching, Mike

Thank you for your videos, man. I have a question that maybe someone here can help me with. I've noticed that when I do a pingpong bouncing on my Yamaha mt120, the result is very noisy and muddy. I'm wondering if it's possible to do a bounce of (let's say) 3 tracks using the direct outputs of the tape through a mixer, mix them, apply EQ, etc., and then record that refined sound back onto the fourth track of the 4-track recorder. I feel like the result will be much cleaner than doing internal bouncing through the ping pong technique. Has anyone tried this?
@aguynamedjosh13 жыл бұрын
can i do this on a fostex x12? and if so, how?
@juliostacecilia7 жыл бұрын
But this technique is mono right? The only way to get a stereo bounce is to bouncing the tracks to your DAWS and back again on to tracks 1 and 2 correct? Your videos r a huge help
@424Recording7 жыл бұрын
Yeah... or you could leave two tracks open but it might not make sense if you're only recording one instrument per track to leave them open. I actually perform the stereo bounce in this video. For your consideration: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nn3XY6mLjLqjpZY

if you have something already on 4, does it stay on that track?
@sleepwalk86963 жыл бұрын
No, you cannot add anything "on top" of something that is already there when it comes to tape. This is why you leave a channel blank if you plan on bouncing tracks down like this.

When you bounce tracks 1, 2, and 3, do they all go into track four as mono? Like if I had tracks 1, 2, and 3, panned left or right in different directions and bounced them all to four, would four just be mono or would it keep the stereo pan that the three tracks had before bouncing?

Yeah. They will be on one mono track. If you want stereo, you'll need two open tracks

@blakewhittington43366 жыл бұрын
424 Recording Still nothing. I've tried everything. 2, 3,and 4 work so I'm guessing it's out but it was working fine when I got it. Could plugging in direct guitar blow a channel? This 424 MarkII was in Perfect shape and is the one we used with my band from 95-2000 and that's the only thing it was ever used for ever so maybe 20 hrs of use. Damn I just dropped a grand to get this going and now this so I need to do your approach where you had channel 4 out I think.
@424Recording6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I had to work around mine for a while. Never had any issue with blowing a channel with direct guitar and I've gone pretty hard with them. It might just be the age of the machine. It is weird that it would all of a sudden stop working after having been fine all those years but stuff does break down. I basically just used 3 tracks for a while, probably not what you want to hear but if you get creative with it, it'll work fine! Good luck, my friend!
@blakewhittington43366 жыл бұрын
424 Recording I've come into a little luck. A friend heard about my problem and had a 4- track laying around he said I could borrow. I was really excited when he got here and its identical to yours a Tascam Mark III so your videos are going to be even easier to follow.

thanks for the vids! I'm revisiting this thing after several years of dust collection. one thing I'm noticing thats different from your example. I ping ponged 1 & 3 to 4, but I'm not seeing the levels show up for the 'ping' tracks 1&3, only on the 'pong' track 4. I've got 1 & 3 set to Tape. wth? were they not recorded hot enough? and the pong track sounds kinda warbily? I might need new tape.
@424Recording7 жыл бұрын
Awesome! What's your pitch knob set at? How do you have 1 & 3 panned?

pitch at TDC, 1 & 3 panned Right, set to Tape, Line Out at Mono, Track 4 Buss R. Tried again and nothing, and still no levels showing up for 1 & 3...I'll try again later today. Not sure what I've got mixed up.

Problem is getting it to sound good. Tracks 1-3 may sound great by themselves but sound awful when bounced on track 4.... You have to do it several times making different EQ adjustments to get the final bounce on track 4 to actually sound decent.

I still have a doubt mike. Is it posible to bounce the tracks with stereo panning? Or does it always have to be mono? For example, if I make a pre mix where guitar is panned all the way to the right and another to the left, will the bounce to track 4 be in mono, or will it keep those changes?
@424Recording7 жыл бұрын
You can bounce in stereo but you'll need two tracks

Every time I bounce tracks on my 424, the quality goes to crap. Is there something I’m doing wrong or is there something on my 4 track I need to fix?
@424Recording7 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, the quality will be diminished with each successive bounce due to hiss... what does your bouncing workflow look like? You can get around the hiss by bouncing to your DAW, fast forwarding the tape to a new section, and bouncing the new mix back to your 4-track. When's the last time you cleaned your machine?
@quirkyfunguy7 жыл бұрын
I just got my 424 recently for super cheap from a dude and I'm learning how to use it still (your vids are very helpful btw). It's not so much a hiss that's making the bounce sound bad. There's sometimes a high pitched tone coming from the bounced track on the cassette and some warbly-ness. I'm thinking I'm either doing something wrong or it needs to be cleaned. There was one demo I recorded and the cassette I used actually got ruined when I bounced the tracks over
