I just modded mine by putting metal tape ( the kind used in ventilation systems) over the erase head. That way I can make tape loops and record on them without the blank space in the loop.

Funny I suppose in a way about that high end while tracking but not printing to tape as such. It is disconcerting.

Great tutorial! I just bought a 244 and the user manual is overly technical for a dope like me. This video made learning how to record with this machine very easy. Thanks!

Is the reverb unit being connected to the tascam via stereo input in this setup? I wasn't sure if you can connect a stereo effects unit to the 244.

Could you run an effects unit in stereo into the 244 or only mono? I am considering buying a roland space echo pedal which has stereo outputs, but not sure if I can only run effects mono on the 244. Thanks!

is it possible to just connect a seperate mixer to one of the tracks input and do some more precise mixing and bussing to sum to one of the 4 tracks?? hopefully that makes sense lol

i use a boombox to bounce. record your output to another tape using a boombox, then put the new tape into the 4-track. once you do this you should pan track 1 all the way to one side and pan track 2 all the way to the other side, make sure they have relatively the same volume. now youu have 2 free tracks and it is all still in stereo and you can repeat this as many times as you want to.

Hi Denis! Thanks for your videos! I have a question: I just got a Tascam PortaOne and I noticed that the “cue” mix comes out only through headphones, and from main outputs L-R I always hear the “remix” mix , even if it’s switched on “cue”. Is that normal, or should I hear the “cue” mix also in the L-R outputs?

Great tutorial on the porta02 mkII. It goes to show that less is more for recording to tape. I love the Twscam and have been thrilled with the quality and mastering to DAT.

Try to get the Type II (chrome) tapes. I’ve had best results with the Maxell XLII tapes, followed by TDK SA ones. Please use only 60 or 90 minutes tapes, the 120 ones are too weak

So how long can these machines stay functional? I know they have work done to them and they get serviced and moving parts get replaced or whatever...but all the circuitry...I mean how long are the boards and all that able to last before they just become totally broken down? I have a Tascam 464.
@imcrow6674

i believe a deck with high torque wouldnt be problematic in any way or form, youd probably only want to use one of these after servicing a deck to make sure everything is running smoothly if it has low torque thatd be a problem, but i dont believe high torque = bad (unless its a player without autostop i suppose)

If you record bouncing all 3 tracks on track 4 R, then (unless I’m wrong) you should have the pans of tracks 1 2 and 3 panned to the right in terms to get your full signal. On the other extreme, if you pan them to full left, track 4 R will record nothing. In your case they are panned to middle - only half of the recorded signal’s juice is bounced to 4 R. Also, I don’t know why you monitor on cue? I monitor on L/R like this I can adjust different tracks at different mix strength that suits my monitoring, I have a feeling that Cue monitoring ignores the mix sliders. Your vids are very nicely done! Thank you!

if you wanted to bounce could you do this? - Once you have all four tracks filled, record that onto a computer program using the RCA cables as one track on the computer. Then play that track and record it back onto track 1 on the Tascam using one of the "line ins". Essentially freeing up tracks 2,3,4 to record ontop of? would that work?

Couldn’t you just record to a second decent tape with Dolby C NC, perform even a 5th track while recording, and then record that whole mix back into just track one, giving you 8 possible tracks in all? Is it just too noisy? Cuz if I wanted a clear sound I’d just use GarageBand on my iPhone lol

I know I'm six years late to this but I'm hoping someone, or the uploader, will see this. I need some help, I bought one of these a while back, but the recording function seems to not work. The light doesn't come on, and even though I can hear myself in my headphones, nothing is put to tape. The feeler switch in the top left of the transport is fine, and I've got everything in it's right place, the mic/line input on track one, the record function switch (buss L) on one, and the trim and tape cue are in their right spots, and the monitor is on cue, so what is the issue? Does anyone know?

Denis ...I had a Porta one ..did many songs ..I don't know why you only had one guitar strumming the rhythm ? I always recorded one guitar on the left then did it again on the right ...filled the stage panorama wonderfully with stereo guitar sound ...
