Back in my day in an all analog workflow we would make sure the sequence is tight and every instrument that’s tied to midi is patched. Our tape machine doesn’tvallow for midi sync. We do all in one go. Then overdub live instrumentation. I don’t miss those days.

I've been trying to figure out for a couple years what I can buy to record multitrack in a DAW. A coworker recommended the DP24 to me, and I never new about the whole "portastudio" thing, I had no idea I had the option to have a dedicated device that I can do all the recording on, and I gotta say, I think I'm gonna pull the trigger on that. I am used to working with a DAW, but I have a feeling this will make things cleaner, and plus I can bring the device over to my girlfriends to record her drums without having to bring my heavy iMac that I'm pretty sure has a brain tumor close to killing it anyway. I was curious if the DP could be used with a DAW and unfortunately not, but that's not a deal breaker. This video was very informative, thank you!

Hello. This video just happened to pop up in my feed today and I'm very glad it did. I subbed immediately after watching it. First I'm thankful that Tascam is still producing equipment despite the overwhelming onslaught of computer based recording. I'm old an oldschool as well. I have had 2 fostech 4 tracker, then thier 8 track open reel with thier mixing board then 4 and 8 track portastudios. I have used the 24 track dps now for many years and unless something bad happens it will be my last. I only personally want to record the old way as in live over an over if necessary until I get the performance in one real live take minus electronic fixes or cutting in one good phrase over an over in a song. I know this isn't for everyone but I only want a finished product that I can play no tricks needed! Sorry for all the words but that's always been my step one. All these Tascam products are great an an incredible value for the money. I wish your tour of these units were around years ago. I never have found any great videos on the 24 an 32 units and learned mine ultimately by myself. One important thing to consider is after you master on the dps taking your sd card out and plugging the card into your computer is way nicer than plugging the unit into you computer. Thanks again for the great content.

I love my DP-24, I have the original one. But I still also use a DAW as well. It just depends on how I feel like working. I like all the extra inputs on the Model 12 since it can be used as an audio interface. My interface only has two inputs. If I had the 12 I could keep all my gear connected instead of having to unplug them all the time to switch over. If my interface ever dies I’d probably get a Model 12.

My original DP-32 died, and when I sent it in for repairs they sent me a DP-32SD. I use a ton of outboard gear that's all MIDI-synced together, which I used with the DP-32 extensively. This completely ruined my workflow since Tascam decided to remove MIDI capability completely from the DP-32SD for some reason.

The digital mixer has midi ports, which is nice for sequencing a synthesizer, but I prefer the Model 12 because it is like an analog mixer. I don’t need to turn on my PC to record. Why oh why has no one EVER thought to include an optional Video Out jack to allow you to use a computer monitor? TASCAM must think we all enjoy squinting at a 3” x 3” screen when we are editing, mixing and mastering. Seems like a simple thing to ask.
@PowercoatMusic3 жыл бұрын
With the Tascam NEO you could use a 3rd party adapter to connect a PC screen, but that was the last version to allow that. Definately something for Tascam to consider moving forward. Please continue providing the great and useful content. Thank you. Also, I know this is a bit off-subject, but i recently acquired a DP-24SD and I was shocked to see how expensive the really good quality 32GB Sandisk SD cards are. Based on your experience, can you tell me if it is really best to use the 'Extreme PRO UHS II' cards, or is there a significantly less expensive alternative that you believe works well without sacrificing performance? The list of SD cards on the Tascam website appears to be a bit dated to me.
@PowercoatMusic3 жыл бұрын
I strongly recommend sticking with the cards on Tascam’s recommended list. These cards have been tested with the unit extensively, and have been proven to work. I have had the same budget SanDisk 32GB card in my machine for several years now with no issues or performance problems whatsoever. I use the USB function to back up my songs to PC. If any issues arise, I will change the card. But if it’s not broke, I’m not going to try to fix it. Thanks so much for watching and wishing you the best. 👍🏿

@@PowercoatMusic Thank you so much for taking the time to respond! That's great to know that the "budget" Sandisk SD card should work fine; however, when I visit the Western Digital website, the card I find has one slight difference in appearance than the one shown in your video: immediately to the right of the "SDHC" icon, there is a roman numeral 1. I'm guessing that really doesn't matter, but do you happen to know if it is the same card? Here's the exact URL: shop.westerndigital.com/products/memory-cards/sandisk-sd#SDSDB-032G-A46 But here is something really confusing: on the Tascam tested media list, it refers to the "SanDisk Standard SDHC (Class 4) 32GB" as "NG" (which means "no good"). Here is the URL for the Tascam tested media list: tascam-ca.com/content/downloads/products/837/dp-24_dp-24sd_dp-32_dp-32sd_tested_media_list_020518.pdf Could you please clarify this for me? Actually it’s fairly simple. You use the 8 combination XLR/1/4” Inputs on the back of the unit to record 8 tracks simultaneously. They are inputs A-H. You can assign them to any of the recording tracks you need to (1-24). Tracks 1-12 are mono tracks and tracks 13-24 are stereo tracks(Paired - 2 tracks in this group equals 1 track). This has been a point of frustration with DP users for a while now. There are many reasons why Tascam may have done this. Production and support costs are usually at the top of the list. If i'm understanding your question correctly, the answer is Yes. *But only 8 tracks can be recorded simultaneously at any one time. Any of the 24 tracks can be assigned to the 8 inputs (A-H) for 8 track simultaneous recording. Remember, tracks 13 to 24 are stereo tracks and each stereo set counts as one track in this group, so in reality that's a total of 6 tracks from 13 to 24. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿

Removing Midi made the SD useless. I want the old one that could burn CD’s AND had MIDI functionality. They basically downgraded the”New” model til it was completely unattractive to buy. The “Model” series look amazing, but you certainly get more for your money with the older dp series. I wish they could have made a wood panelled model series that did everything the old ones did. I’d reckon at least a large percentage of the type of folks who use music equipment to this extent are the same kinds of folks who still want and/or appreciate physical copies of their music. Even local garage bands still want to be able to hand out or sell CDs. Plenty here in Boston are still resorting to handing out tapes for cryin out loud!

The DP-32SD has a metronome but unlike the Boss BR series, it doesn't contain a rhythm/drum-machine instrument? That is what makes it less powerful to me than a standalone Boss Recorder. Sadly neither the MODEL12 or DP32SD really seem to have taken the home songwriter people seriously. Most of us don't have a drum kit and can't play drums. On my PC with a DAW of course, I have drum VSTs but it's great to have a bunch of built in basic rock and country and pop and jazz rhythms when you are doing song demos and early stage songwriting. A separate drum machine box of course is possible, but with the compute power onboard these digital portastudios it's sad that nobody other than BOSS cares about this feature. For home songwriters with mobile phones and tablets though, both of these will let you record audio out of your phone, so a virtual drummer on your tablet or iphone plus either of these units may be a quick and fun way to use these boards. The MIDI, bluetooth and the daw control (record and play back your phone audio output) make the MODEL 12 the preferred unit for me.

I hear you. 😊 The ZOOM R24 has a built-In drum machine and sampler that make it a more feature packed stand-alone unit for folks with your specific requirements. I see a Mode switch button "Live PC MTR" on the Model12 , but i don't understand the use of this Live Mode switch button compare to the MTR Mode (Multitrack mode)

@Gosam l'Art au Naturel Thanks for clearing this up for me, now I understand. The “LIVE” setting of the mode switch uses the signal from the input jack as the input source. That’s what it does. It’s a routing function. This should help you in what you need to do. “PC” uses a signal from a computer connected to the USB port as the input source. “MTR” uses a playback signal from the SD card as an input source. I hope this information helps.

@@PowercoatMusic Yes , that's clear now for the settings , thanks you very much. My question now is : is it possible to record a stereo Master track with the Live setting on all the channels ?

@@gosampeinturemusique I don't see why not. If anyone thinks/knows differently, I would love to hear it. Again this is based on my understanding of the unit. 😊

Hi there, I have a dp24sd and a model 12. My problem is there is no midi sync on the dp24 and not enough tracks on the model 12. Is it possible to sync two model 12s via midi ?
