Thank you so much for this. I decided to go for the DR05X after your review. Very well presented and explained.

Good review! Which device will be better to record tank drums?
@hgerry4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your video, it was helpful in deciding which device to go for. As regards your phasing issue when trying to combine two recordings from separate devices, perhaps you could get around this by using a short test sound, such as a loud clap, before and after the main recording. Then import the recordings into Ableton, align the first clap, and then time stretch one of the recordings such that the second clap is also aligned.
@GeertVanGele4 жыл бұрын
This would work in principle, but it is always a bad idea to time stretch a complex acoustic signal.

I absolutely love my DR-05. I've used it for all sorts of projects in different genres from capturing sound for game development to recording ghosts! lol

Hi Geert. Great video. You mention doing some postproduction on your iPad. Which apps do you use (recommend)? Could you (in a future video) elaborate on this process?
@GeertVanGele6 жыл бұрын
Great idea. I keep it in mind. Look into AudioShare (stereo recording, organizing and simple editing), Mobile Conv (reverb). For multitrack recording and deep editing: Auria.

I've seen videos of these tascams for use on motorcycles for vlogging and that's what I'm looking to do. Is the DR40 better for doing vlogging??
@cageshowproductions72128 ай бұрын
Zoom, is Tascam's biggest competitor, in my opinion. Love Zoom, think I'll give Tascam a try.

Hi Geert, what you think would fit better for a single guitar, recording in the room? Accordimg to mic position, seems dr40 is directly recording from soundhole, so fits better?

Can you plug a USB from a turntable into a DR-05 for higher bit rate? Or do I need to plug the turntable into an ART USB Phono Plus, and then into the DR-05? Or is a USB phono plus not necessary with the DR-05? I plan to edit an LP record using RX8 iZotope, and I heard you can get a higher bit rate going this route.
@GeertVanGele3 жыл бұрын
To the best of my knowledge, I don't think you can connect a usb mic (or usb turntable for that matter) into the dr-05. The only info I can find, is that the usb connection on the dr-05 works only for connecting to a computer. I don't know if this is correct or if it changed with the dr-05x. Anyway, even if it would be possible, it seems highly unlikely to me that you will end up with a higher resolution (and higher quality for that matter). The analog to digital conversion happens in the usb turntable, so whatever that resolution is, you will not be able to make it better by recording it in a higher resolution... hope this is helpful.

Thank you for the video. About the recording quality, is there any difference between the two devices using an external mic?
@GeertVanGele4 жыл бұрын
I haven't noticed any difference in recording quality, but that is with the internal mics. I have never connected an external mic to these recorders.

Not through the whole thing yet but wouldn't the DR-40 be able to do both shapes since the microphones move?
@GeertVanGele5 жыл бұрын
moving the mics does not change the characteristics of the DR 40 into omni, it simply spreads out the mics.

Between the DR40 and DR05 strictly as mics, do they both offer the same/similar recording quality when both are recording in the AB setting? I need them specifically for recording indoor/outdoor, larger ambient sounds and this is a more affordable option than Rode's two StereoMics. Tascams seem better at recording brighter, fuller, and more detailed sounds vs the Zoom line.
@GeertVanGele5 жыл бұрын
I haven't noticed any difference in quality between the mics of the DR40 and the DR05. Strictly speaking about the quality of the mics of the Zoom H1, I think the H1 sounds more neutral than both Tascams (more highs and especially lows), though not a basis for any concern. Hope this helps.
@masonfamily61246 жыл бұрын
Do you have any sample recordings? I would love to hear the differences between these at various distances including the Zoom H1. Most people doing reviews are only recording one thing close up, like a single voice or instrument. I want to know how these sound when trying to capture an event, for myself it would be as an audience member at a school function. Perhaps an outdoor event, the band playing at a football game. Not necessarily your typical one on one interview most people review these for. I am sure these mics would handle things differently. An exact same clip recorded from each device would be awesome. Also, can you use all the inputs on the DR-40 to create 5.1 sound in production? If so, have you tried it?
@GeertVanGele6 жыл бұрын
I would suggest to use directional mikes for the concert recordings you describe. If you would use omni microphones in these situations, the result will be even more audience noise to an already doubtful quality recording. In order to have a decent recording (accoustical concerts), you would have to place your microphones at a couple of meters distance max (and preferably up above the players). My videos with the French repertoire (recorder and harpsichord - see my channel kzbin.info) are recorded with both Tascam recorders simultaneously. I ended up using the directional mics except for the harpsichord solo and the soprano recorder pieces (if I remember correctly). I'm not sure if 5.1 recording is possible with the 4 microphone setup. I never looked into that. Hope this helps. Greetings!

Grammar tip: the abbreviated form of "microphone" is spelled as "mic" (not "mike")
