11 years after this is still useful. I miss your videos. Hope you are doing great

The drifting issue happens because your camera and your Tascam uses seperate clock chips. With the tolerances on consumer electronics, the two chips do not entirely have the same clock frequency, and thus you find that over a long period, you get "drift". There isn't really a way around it, it is the nature of the consumer beast. In professional setups, you link the camera timing with the audio timing and you do not get drift. Apparently it use to run from AC power as frequency reference.

Good video. We are using the DR-40 100% in our porductions and there is nothing we are missing. May be that for bigger productions you need more but for small productions where 2 lavs or 1 lav and a shot gun are what is been used this recorder is more them good. Love the sound quality, love the feeling and the robustness. I will recommend it to any one looking for a great quality and affordable field recorder.

I have a DR-05 that I bought for use in my media class. Just thought about the firmware, and lo and behold...! Thanks bro! Still trying to figure out how to make the playback volume a bit louder. The built in speaker seems kinda meh, but the recording quality is absolutely stellar thus far.

Nice review. I have and like the Zoom H4N, but it's always better to have competition. In the long run we all benefit if these products are nip and tuck in features, quality and pricing.

Thanks for this update.. It works as you said. Haven't tried it yet to see if I've gotten rid of the helicopter noise set. But I will keep you updated..

I haven't tried to sync anything over 12 min. With clips that long I haven't run into the problem. However a number of people had reported sync issues as well as helicopter sound noises in their recordings. I'm guessing it's poor quality control on tascam's end. The test is easy to run, just setup your camera to film the dr40 hit record on both make some noise, then wait 15 or 20 minutes and make some noise at the end. If you have drifting problems you'll see it when you try to sync in post.

That's actually a setting in the menu under record mode I believe it's labeled as EXT L DLY then it has a ms number after it. Make sure it's set to zero.

The Phantom power works well on the DR-40. Though I haven't had any phantom power issues on the H4n that I know of.

No idea, maybe you should do the old buy a replacement and return it. Disclaimer: I do not in any way endorse this method.

I have both, I can see the reasons for owning either one.

If I just use a single channel on the Tascam Dr-40 I usually use it in dual mode with Source set to EXT in 1 and dual lvl set to -8. It generates 2 mono files, one at the input level and one at -8 from the input level. No Helicopter sound and the clips give me the option to select between the two in post. I wonder if it might be caused by any of the selections in record mode.

I'm hoping this fixes the 'clicking' sounds i'm getting, both from line and xlr... G3 and Rode NTG 2, no obvious reason for the clicking.

I noticed some audio drift on a shoot I did the other day for a church service when I went to edit in post. I use a Tascam to record audio separately. After about 15 minutes into each clip is when the drift became noticable. I put my camera in SD mode so I could get a longer record time (roughly 26 minutes). This won't be an issue on shorter recordings. Do all digital audio recorders experience some drift like this?

I've a problem with the DR-40 it's like a hiss when using the External mics only
@koraps8 жыл бұрын
I have two issues with this recorder, one of them is a really annoying hiss which I'm guessing comes from the phantom power source, and sometimes that noise gets recorded. But even worse than the hiss is the fact that the recording stops after 3, 5, 7, sometimes 20 seconds it is started (I never know when it's going to stop recording, but 90% of the times that I've tried to use it, that happens) and that makes a field recorder like this pretty much useless, I've tried changing and formating de memory card: nothing. I thought I had configured the recording time and file size wrong, that wasn't the reason either. I read somewhere that upgrading the firmware would fix this problem so I'm gonna try this and expect it to work properly.
@Photographicelements8 жыл бұрын
+KPS the first issue: the "hiss," often called. "helicopter noise," can be addressed by pressing the menu button after audio is recording. i know it's weird, but it works, and yes, you will not be able to see the levels as you record, but the peak monitor button will blink if the levels peak. the second issue i have not encountered or heard of. have you tried updating the firmware? the new update 2.11 includes an update that improves writing speed to the card, that may fix the problem. i've encountered a similar problem when recording large video files to a slow card, that may be the problem. in my tascam dr40, i'm using an old 16Gb sandisk extreme pro card rated for "hd video," and class 10. i never used the 2Gb card that came with it. perhaps a faster write speed is needed; 16Gb class10 cards are super cheap now, even class10 u3 cards (super fast for 4k video) are cheap now. perhaps that's the problem, but i cannot say for certain. can you try ac power? maybe ask yo use it in a store before buying to see if that fixes the problem..
@koraps8 жыл бұрын
About, the second issue, the firmware was definetly the reason, as soon as I updated it, it was fixed, thank you! And for the first one, yeah that's weird but I'll try it for sure, thank you very much again!

Do you have any issues with the DR-40 having audio drifting out of sync on clips over 15 minutes? I just received mine and started finding people saying recordings over 15 minutes will drift out of sequence. I am searching around for more info about this issue before I return my Dr-40. If you could share your experience with syncing long recordings with the DR40 it would highly highly appreciated.
