We Were Dying to Know Who Billy Was in *BLACK CHRISTMAS (1974)!!!!!*

Even though we never got to find out who Billy was and why he was doing the things he was doing....we still really loved this movie and it kept us on our toes the entire time!!!!

That ending is probably the best ending of any horror film. The ambiguity of it is perfect. The phone ringing is meant to imply her fate and obviously Billy was not Peter and he was still in the attic. The only sequel happening is the fan film It’s Me, Billy which is being released this spring. Make sure to look at their new teaser. It looks amazing

The director, Bob Clark, never intended for Billy to be shown, only in silhouette and one brown eye. The brown eye was shown intentionally for those that noticed that Peter's eyes were blue so that we would know the wrong guy was killed. In the remake that was changed up. the 2nd remake is only in name and the story is very different.

This movie did deserve a great sequel to end the story. Instead of the two bastard remakes that make zero sense. Without a sequel it's just an odd horror movie. In this movie's defense there were countless slasher movies made in a very similar style to this movie.

@@averymcr_ As much as I love Halloween, Black Christmas is probably my all time favorite slasher film. The shot composition, the atmosphere, music, sound design, the cast, and the characters they play....on every level it just hits that sweet spot of entertaining and chilling. I don't think I'd say it's underrated, since most everyone who sees it sing its praises, but it is often overlooked, and that is crime against horror. Cinema in general for that matter. Spread the word, people. This movie deserves far more recognition than it gets.

Bob Clark deliberately left the ending and Billy’s identity up to interpretation. It’s much more frightening not knowing who he was and what his motivations were. You do get hints of Billy’s possible history throughout the phone calls, however. It’s clear they were using Peter as the red herring. All this time you believe it could be him, but they intentionally showed Billy’s eyes to be brown and Peter’s to be blue. The final phone call was the last twist, which confirmed that Billy was still in the attic and he may or may not have killed Jess (as he always called after a murder). Some may find it anticlimactic, but I personally love the mystery! It’s the same with the original Halloween, before it spawned a franchise that sought to explain who he was. In the original movie, he was just some random guy who spotted Laurie on his doorstep one day and decided to stalk and torment her, and also kill her friends. He had no connection to her until the second film, which I think made him much more terrifying!

It's probably not the first story to use this trope, but it does also predate the 1979 film, When A Stranger Calls... which is another great movie more people need to see. Those first few minutes in the house are amazing on their own, and the rest is disturbing and tense as all hell and leads to a great final act.

I think it's obvious to everyone that Carpenter was influenced by Bob, no in fact COPIED Bob Clarks directing POV style. But as much as I appreciate Carpenter, you can't escape the fact that he has copied and remade many ideas whether it be through directing or even his music. But at least Bob was gentleman enough to give credit where it is due, unlike Carpenter towards Bob. That should tell you everything about the mans character. And let's face it shall we? Black Christmas is 10 times the movie Halloween is in so many ways. No wonder it's been sort of a "secret".

There's no way of knowing for sure what her fate was or who the killer was, that's part of the on-going fascination with this film and open endings like this. I think a cool twist could've been if Chris (Art Hindle) had been the killer because nobody suspected him so to have had his face peek out the attic window at the end, I think would've been quite a surprise. Bottom line, not knowing for sure and leaving it up to the viewer's imagination is also what makes it a classic. It's a bit like some of those '70s Italian horror/giallo and crime movies, they would quite often have illogical storylines and endings that didn't resolve everything for you on a silver platter but instead left more questions than answers which is partly why fans return to them again and again.

There actually is a backstory within the phone calls. But what makes this film so clever is that you have to figure it out as the viewer. It's definitely not a one-watch-fast-paced-gore-fest-slasher-film. It is so much more than that. It causes you to use your own imagination throughout. But I had a blast watching all three of you discussing and reacting to this brilliant film. It took me back to the first time I watched it and the same questions, laughs, and fright I experienced not knowing what I know now. :)

This is the craziest thing. I was just logging on my Amazon work laptop to suggest Black Christmas (1974) directed by Bob Clark! One of my favorite horror films and the ultimate Christmas slasher. Elvis Presley is on the record saying it's his favorite horror film and he watched it with his family on Christmas for a few until his untimely death. The film has a ton of great horror themes that would become tropes: killer's POV, anonymous phone calls, calls coming from inside the house, an incompetent bumbling cop, red herrings and a holiday in the title/plot. @@tashatipton2141 I feel the reason for that is due to the film being overshadowed by the slasher giants like Halloween, Friday the 13th, etc. Another underrated movie you should check out is Magic (1978), it's a psychological thriller about a man named Corky (Anthony Hopkins) and his ventriloquist dummy, Fats. He's on his way to becoming a star, but after finding out about having to take a psychiatric test, he runs off and hides out. During his hiding, he reconnects with his childhood sweetheart and Fats doesn't like it.

Black Christmas is a definite classic. I always watch it around the holidays. The 2006 remake is quite good in my opinion, campier but still goes for the scares as well. It’s a remake that has a great style but doesn’t try to be exactly like the original. Entertaining in its own right. They remade it again in 2019 and I feel it’s my obligation as a horror fan to tell you you can skip that one (yikes) lol A fun fact is that the original Black Christmas and A Christmas Story were both directed by the same guy, the late great Bob Clarke. Two totally opposite vibes but both holiday classics. You may also enjoy the Christmas themed horror films P2, Krampus, and 2012’s Silent Night. Love the reactions! Keep those horror flicks coming! The policeman said that the killed was calling after each murder (first was after he killed the girl in the park), so while the final call Jess is already dead. "Halloween" was supposed to be a sequel to "Black Christmas" and the work title was "The Babysitter Murders".

I don't believe that it was Billy who killed Janice(the girl in the park). Janice had supposedly been reported missing the day after Billy turned up at the sorority house. Remember, Billy arrived at night. Janice would have had to have been missing for at least two days-which wasn’t the case. Also consider, (though it’s never stated) how far is the park from the sorority house? I find it really unlikely that Billy decided to take a trip out of the house(in broad daylight) to go scope out the park and encounter Janice. Plus having to go and sneak back into the sorority house afterwards? It just doesn't make much sense, when you think about it. I’m inclined to believe that Janice’s murder was unrelated to Billy, and could have been a drifter instead.

Carpenter denies any influence from Black Christmas. The director of Black Christmas says that he talked to Carpenter about doing a sequel in which "Billy" escapes from a mental hospital and starts killing babysitters. That sequel never got made but go figure, the plot of Halloween involves an escaped mental patient killing babysitters.

The fact that you never find out who "Billy" is and why he does what he does is kind of the point. He could be anyone and anywhere. You can't even be sure that his name is Billy. All you can be sure of is that he's extremely disturbed and violent. Whatever your imagination filled in is probably ten times as frightening as any origin they could have come up with. The 2006 remake proved that in this case less is much, much more. Don't bother with the remakes. They're terrible.

INTERESTING TRIVIA. John Carpenter (Halloween) once asked Bob Clark, the director how he would do a sequel to Black Christmas. Bob told him he would have Billy caught and put in a mental asylum and then have him escape on Halloween night and stalk baby sitters in a suburb.... and this was how Halloween was made. It is basically an unintentional sequel to Black Christmas!

Audiences today think that horror movies are about following a formula, showing as much graphic gore as possible and jump scares. It seems people don't know how to deal with ambiguity anymore. They need every last thing explained and resolved and if it's not, then they need a whole other movie just to give them backstory. I love that this film establishes some tropes while subverting expectations and that we never find out who Billy is or what his motivations are. It is scarier that way because if this were happening to you, you wouldn't have a backstory either. You'd just know that this twisted stranger is fucking with you and no amount of backstory will change the danger you're in.

Not unlike Hichcock, the director wants you to feel unsettled that there is no closure, which all three of you normally expected. That's part of the overall creepiness of this film, so many unanswered questions without any closure.

I’ve never actually seen this one but I’ve seen the 2006 remake that one is way more brutal than the 74 movie it looks like and there is another remake that came out last year I haven’t seen either but I’m telling you right now the 2006 one gave me nightmares and I don’t usually get that scared of anything but idk if you’ve ever seen Better Watch Out that’s another Christmas horror movie that’s really good

The credits never say who played Billy et al. The POV shots, "Billy" is considered to be played by the cinematographer. When seen in the shadows, it is the director, Bob Clark. On the telephone, the voices are director Bob Clark, actor Nick Mancuso, and several female actors. To represent the various personalities.

Considering that the remakes backstory for Billy is simultaneously gross and really, really stupid, I think this was better. Billy being a faceless killer makes him infinitely more terrifying and not knowing his motives, assuming he even had any and he wasn't just batshit crazy, is effectively chilling. This movie is the epitome of less is more.

Completely agree! The remake was definitely overkill. After I had time to think about it it is wayyyyy more scary not knowing anything about him. Sometimes I just need time to let everything sink in and really process something lol We did a video of the remake and we pretty much just rip that one to shreds!

It's fun watching this reaction with all of you going off of the "rules of the slasher" considering Black Christmas came out well before any such rules had been established. This is, essentially, the first slasher film (and no, despite what ANYONE says, Psycho is *not* a slasher movie), and frankly, I think it's a better written film than Halloween (which I also love).

I am so glad I was not aware this was before the horror movie tropes because it really made it that much better when the virgin got killed. Totally caught me off guard and I absolutely loved it!!!! That is definitely one of the main reasons why I never do research into films before watching so absolutely nothing gets spoiled!!!!

Okay, so the cops are small town American college town cops in 1974 pre-FBI super serial killer crimes unit FBI... at the very end the small town cops leave because they’re sure it was Peter; they got their killer and they know enough not to disturb the scene anymore as the forensic guys from State police are due to arrive soon as mentioned in the dialogue. Everything said at the end - mostly off screen - between various randoms is important to help the viewer with this seemingly WTF ending... this movie was filmed in Toronto where I was born (1965) and raised. The park scene used High Park, where I played as a boy. The campus is U of T where I’ve partied and played Rugby. I’ve even played hockey at the ice rink they use (first goalie mask used - and used correctly - in a horror movie?). Andrea Martin (glasses) is an SCTV legend. Movies don’t come more Canadian than Black Christmas... Love your channel; great work. The woman in the middle is a champ btw. Also... toilet tank water is fine to drink in an emergency situation because it’s fresh water and the tank is not connected to the business end of the bowl in any way that would make the tank water dangerous to drink. Recommendation... The Changeling (1980), another Canadian film. It’s what I recommend to people who want to watch a horror film that’s “actually scary” because - I think - it’s the scariest one that can be watched by non-horror fans. Other recommends for you are Calvaire, May, Teeth, Raw, and, if you want to break your brains... Dogtooth. Three of those are foreign movie so watch out for any subtitles or expanding horizons...🍷🌻♥️🍷🌻♥️🍷🌻♥️

I believe the whole thing with Billy is up to the viewer's interpretation or you can take it as it is - Billy is an escaped disturbed psycho mental patient and Agnes was his younger sister who he killed and mutilated when he was young. They did have that explanation too in the 2006 remake, but they made it exaggerated and that just took away the mystery and the suspense! The 2019 remake is mostly just the name, but they did make some little references, but that one looks so god damn horrible! Even the trailer spoils the movie's twist! I would say don't bother with either of the remakes because they suck! But it's up to you, your channel and all....Would have loved seeing your reaction on the whole fellatio-gag! XD
