Also, that "effective ranges" like 800 m for more common sniper rifles are very exaggerated, most of wars are not like in Afghanistan where you shoot from one mountain to other mountain. 100 m is already distance that you barely see the target without scope (you can aim only to siluete, not to specific part of body), so 100-300 m is already sniper distance and it's enough distance that when enemy see you, they can't effectively hit you with standard guns and you still have enough of time to escape if they start chasing you. People who never shot are crazy about distances, they see bullshits in movies, yes, you can hit something on 800 m, but you need to lie on ground with good bipod and be patient, as I said, you are a good shooter when you hit something on 100 m.

Have no experience with weapons (except some air guns) but you are right. Never thought about, but the goalkeeper on a soccer/football field is already quite a small siluette and even if you can still see him, it would be hard to hit the head without scope. Just realised what it means to shoot over 300m because in video games, thats usually pretty easy.

The VSS Vintorez is actually a brilliant design. The click is quiet enough that the audible range is substantially less than the effective range, and you could easily dismiss it as something else even if you heard it. And the round is powerful enough to penetrate many types of body armor. It's therefore a great "urban sniper" weapon, where you may be engaging high value targets at comparatively close ranges. When you start to think of it as an urban sniper instead of a traditional sniper rifle, then it starts making a lot of good sense. Firing this thing from inside a building, the click may not even be audible 20 feet away outside.

Yeah sure. Movies and video games aren’t real. Any bullet with the mass that this rifle fires that has the speed needed to penetrate body armor would break the sound barrier which would be audible, even at pretty big distances. This guys videos are 100% goofy swill made for people that have never fired weapons in real life. Edited to add: the 130 db this thing is reported to fire at would be very loud. It’s the equivalent of a jet taking off with afterburners engaged at 50 yards distance.

There was a story I read on a newspaper. It was from a Ukrainian serviceman. It went; 'i was relaxing with my squad leader and my squad mate, then a shot hit just above me. We all dashed for the trench but my squad mate who was to my right was hit in the jaw which shattered killing him instantly while also mangling his face. No chance of a open coffin. Then my squad leader, who was behind me when we all started running for the trench, was hit in his forehead. His head was cracked open causing his head to split open. I was in the trench then peaked out and was hit in the shoulder causing me to pass out.' this was all done by a single soldier with a vintorez and none of them had any clue where the soldier was

The closest thing to the VSS the U.S was going to have was the honey badger for which was meant for SpecOps, it was chambered in .300 blackout which is a 5.56x45 casing accommodating a .30 cal bullet, it has better ballistics than the 7.62x39 and uses the same 5.56x45 magazine and bolt while keeping the same rounds count of 30 for standard mags. The idea was for the operator to use the subsonic ammo for silent engagements, and having the ability to switch to supersonic ammo when shit hits the fan to get extra velocity, range and penetration. It wasn't adopted by the military but it found its way in the civilian market.

Not sure why this weapon is branded a sniper or marksman rifle. It should be branded as a covert ops weapon. It fulfills the function needed for operating behind enemy lines with no support. Reminds me of the fg42, has the concept the nazis believed in for success of these kind of combat roles.

@@YTStopCensoringFreedomOfspeech actually i think special purpose carbine would be a better classification for it but it gets put as a sniper because it was scoped at the time when scopes were really only on sniper and marksman rifles for the most part (remember ACOG's didn't get to be a much of a thing until after the first gulf war and this is an early mid 80's piece!!) plus it was meant to precision shooting and on top of that it the VSS doesn't really fit neatly in any regular category!!

"No stopping power" I think your under estimating the power of 9x39, they don't use the cheap FMJ shit you get in the US, they use BP (7N12) which is capable of penetrating type III body armor under 300m which is its effective range, add the fact that this rifle is about as loud as a suppressed .22 then you have yourself a very deadly weapon.

How do you think that has any more "stopping power" over FMJ? The only difference is that the military rounds penetrate soft body armor. No 9x39 round is meant to expand or fragment and will make a hole straight through, exactly like a 9x19mm FMJ bullet.

@@plmokm33 fyi many land based fighter aircraft have tail hooks - they're used during emergency landings when the plane might not be able to stop before the end of the runway. the F-15, F-16, F-22, F-35A, & Eurofighter Typhoons all have tail hooks even though they can't operate from a carrier. not very quirky

Some western armies do use weapons firing 300 Blackout ammunition for suppressed fire. The most significant silenced weapon used by the west has been the HK MP5SD for suppressed firing. 300 Blackout has similar performance to the Russian 9mm x 39mm super and subsonic ammunition. These calibers can come in subsonic and supersonic ammunition depending on requirements. Supersonic rounds can be used for extra power when suppression is not vital. .300 blackout has nearly the same caliber as the AK 7.62mm x 39mm commonly used with older AK rifles. Not all countries disclose the use of these rifles. The US and the Netherlands are known to have used 300BO rifles. They can provide accurate fire at over 200 meters. That is better than 9mm in suppressed sub-machine guns like the 9mm HK MP5SD. More powerful suppressed ammunition that be fired from AR-10 type rifles using 7.62mm NATO ammunition. They can fire much larger bullets at subsonic speeds over a longer range. Two rounds have been developed. the .375 Raptor and 8.6mm Blackout from Faxon. With subsonic and supersonic loads. They have superior performance over the 9mm Russian caliber. Like 300 BO they mainly require a barrel change for 7.62mm NATO rifles to fire these new calibers. And likely some minor modifications for more reliable action and use with suppressors. Such as increased gas pressures. This includes AR-10, M-14, HK G-3 and FN FAL rifles. Special forces have a much greater range of equipment they can use. .300 BO is also very useful as a PDW, personal defence weapon. They provide more accurate fire than 9mm sub-machine guns. This would be every useful for REMF soldiers and non riflemen in front line units. Sig Saure and Daniels defence offers a variety of .300 weapons. They would be distributed like .30 M-1carbines used during WW2 but .300 BO has significantly better performance. And can penetrate some body armor.

A couple of days ago fired with VSS. I've got the target on the 50 meters and fired standing on hands, using 2x scoup. The bullet is so heavy that when you are trying to fire "in 10 score", you are getting only 6-7 score (near 10 centimeters down). It's very silent and it has no recoil by the way

One of the reasons to built it was the fact that soviet recon soldier used to grab two AKs: one with silencer attached and one without it. It was actually heavy setup, USSR decided to build special weapon which will be light-weight sneaky one for recons. VSS and Val are basically that sneaky AKM replacement.

@@vihreelinja4743 Supressed and unsupressed AK has different ballistic so if you want to be sure that you will hit target in 100 meters using your ironsight mark you must zeroing your rifle with supressor attached. If you just attach supressor without zeroing your AK will not hit target at 100 meters by your 100 meters mark due to different ballistic. That is the reason why recon used to has two AK.

First time I seen this rifle was playing metal gear solid 4. That game had so many real life guns and correct calibers was a awesome game to use as reference. Vss 9mm was mainly used for body armor penetration. Uses a armor piercing round I forget the make up of the round.

Some extra facts about the VSS and VAL and 9x39 guns in general are the VSS can be dissembled and fitted into a special suitcase, this was a feature meant for the KGB for covert operations. As the VSS and VAL are milled guns they are rather expensive so in the 90's the Russians produced the VSK-94 and 9A-91 which are stamped sheet metal with plastic furniture and their suppressors where also detachable, said guns fell out of use by the late 2000's and where only really used by the MVD and other internal units, the 9a91 also had two prototypes with a grenade launcher and a second with an under barrel shotgun which was based of the RMB-93 a top loaded tubefed forward pump action shotgun. They also only had 20rd mags that where not compatible with the VSS/VAL and where completely straight rectangular boxes made of metal. The VAL and VSS are also related the the SR3 and SR3M which where later designs with differnt features such as the SR3 being super compact with detachable suppressor while the SR3M was more a VAL with a foldable forgrip and detachable suppressor and said guns also had a new 30rd mag steel that can be used in the VSS/VAL, latter a plastic 30rd mag was made with the new VSSM and upgraded VAL. Both guns keep the VSS style fire selector behind the trigger while having an AK style safety that must be disengaged first.

VSS penetrates 4 mm steel sheet at a distance of 500 meters (depending on the ammunition), thanks to a special subsonic nomenclature of unique ammunition (SP-5, SP-6, SPP, BP). And now, during the Ukrainian conflict, the VSS became a common weapon complex in the Russian armed forces.

It's a great rifle; better arguably than .300 BLK, as 9x39mm is 250-278 grains, which is heavier than .300 BLK (around 220 grains); so more stopping power. The latest rifle for this round, the SR-3 Vikhr has a detachable silencer and can be used with or without the suppressor. Also 30 round mags are available, something the video failed to mention. One big advantage of this system is that AS VAL/ SR-3 Vikhr mags will not fit into an AK. That may not sound like a big deal but when you have two type of ammo on the battlefield, having one magazine can be a huge problem. That's also probably why this rifle is issued to grunts, while the .300 BLK is only issued to special forces, who are less likely to mix the mags up.

Tbf, it has the same design choice as the 7.62×39. The 7.62 diameter was chosen because it can take advantage of existing tools to make the barrel instead of having to build new tooling machines. And the 300 was chosen because it can be made from already existing cartridges. While it doesn't enjoy the benefit of a specialized cartridge designed from the ground up, it has the advantage of having more raw materials readily available.

It's a weapon tailored to how the Spetznaz operate. Or operated. Clearly an urban weapon - and dual purpose - sly shooter or shootout shooter. We romanticize the sniper as a long reacher. But concealment in confined areas is on the menu as well. Further a sniper's job is often observation, scouting and reporting. ... Is that the Spetznaz' job? Is their job more on the lines of getting narrow tasks accomplished? Then they've probably got the right rifle here.

Finally someone understands what functionality really is. Most of the people want to use the "sniper" or DMR name for this weapon because of the optics (maybe?). But as you wrote, this gun was built to fulfill the requirements of the purpose and methods of a particular SF unit of which the tasks are completely different from the regular units'. Sometimes it is not important to add things to categories, but to understand their purpose and there wouldn't be misunderstandings. By the way, yours is an underrated comment.

UKranian solder explain it very simply.They use artillery from morning till dusk,we can not sleep or rest,then come night with night come Specnatz (or some other grup)with Vals and thermal,then in morning Army push if they do not brake our line ,rance and repeat..till they brake it..pretty deadly weapon..it is no joke uses Tungsten tip 9×39mm bullets,can penetrate 4 mm of titanium at 400 m easy ,vest can not help...

It sounds like what you're describing is a the MC51 made by FR Ordnance Intl. It was designed for the SAS as a short maneuverable rifle that could defeat body armour by using 7.62 Nato. It would be more accurate to describe it as a cut-down G3 variant.

VSS Vintorez, like AS VAL, is used for anti-terrorist operations, as it was in Afghanistan and Chechnya, as well as for urban battles, where distances often do not exceed 300-400 meters. For fighting at such distances, this weapon is ideal.

First, the dragunov is a marksman rifle. second, 9x39 which is what the VSS and VAL shoot, both have more stopping power, and penetration ability than .300 blackout, which was the US answer to this rifle. If I'm remembering correctly, this round also has more stopping power than a 5.56 as well. Stopping power being joules delivered to target on impact.

I built a DeLisle replica a few years back, it's such a fun little gun and a favorite with the family. Even with my own admittedly mediocre baffle design, all that extra volume to work with more than made up for it. The DeLisle is a surprisingly quiet carbine and a lot lighter than it appears. Justin...I've seen an integral 77/44 and got to shoot it, they're very similar to a DeLisle and you can run some really heavy subs through them compared to a .45acp. My vote would be the 96/44 though, it's a faster rifle and stubby suppressed lever actions are cool as hell.

I don't really see many actual drawbacks from this. Granted, it's got fewer bullets so you'd have to carry an extra mag or two to make up the difference, but seeing as normal doctrine is to fire semi-auto I don't see how you'd have any major drawback by having to reload after 20 instead of 30. You've got essentially the normal effective range that soldiers fire at, up to 300m, it's suppressed, it's accurate, got decent penetration ability and it's light. It wouldn't replace a sniper rifle, but for a normal squad it seems like a great addition or even substitute for current rifles in many countries, provided the price is right.

The VSS can use just about any AK pattern 30rd mag with virtually no mods done to it. The cartridge OAL and width remains identical to a 7.62x39, it's just the follower that needs to be replaced, and that can be taken from a 20rd mag and dropped into a 30rd mag. Two reasons why they chose the 20rd capacity is length and reliability. For length, you need only look at how they're shooting it from a prone position, it's just easier to operate closer to the ground when there's not a mag trying to become a tripod. Reliability, the problem comes from the added weight of that heavy 9mm projo compared to the 7.62 projo, stacked up in the mag there's a lot more weight for the spring to lift and feed, so a standard AK mag spring can cause feeding issues. Add extra spring weight and now you're getting into the issue of spreading the feed lips out because of that extra pressure. It's a relatively easy fix though, as the updated version of the VSS does come with 30rd mags and those issues were addressed.

The VAL and VSS were created with the active participation of Spetsnaz and are more or less like the swiss army knife - you have a sniper, suppressed weapon and rifle with ability to penetrate body armor all in one. It covers a lot of angles that special missions require - stealth, firepower and compact size. The higher caliber and the less amount of ammo in the magazine are not an issue considering the level of training of the Special forces. Their are not in the "spray and pray" game.

No idea why they have it. Any of their special forces are, well, in a way dumb. They will overkill an item without caring about sound even if hostages die in mass (do I need to give the examples Russia are well known for). For fucks sake they even sometimes take a BMP with a 30mm cannon and will start shooting the house until it falls if the 'bad guy' is inside (KGB). So no idea when Russian doc is basically (fuck it; over kill x10) vs something like Us special forces where they use it for stealth. The more you get to know Russian culture they don't tend to use logic/planning/thinking for a lot of stuff - I don't understand why other then it is cheaper to exclude that stuff. I mean, even Russian's special forces are not really special forces but more similar to the US Marines in training and action - they don't even have decent special forces like the US. Not trying to say Russian's tatics/etc is bad and they suck - but there is plenty of info online which confirms it.

Still the funniest part was switching to RPG and shooting crazy jeep drivers, wanting to drive over me, they never learned :D Anyway thanks for bringing me some good memories, its been like a decade, I thought that everyone has forgotten about this game.

The most similar weapon is a suppressed M1- 30x30 carbine. But it lacks in long distance penetration. It's range is about the same and speed of round. But it lacks punch at 300y. Only penetrating 4mm of steel. It's the closest we got. 30 round mag full auto. 18 in barrel foldable stock. In paratrooper model.

As far as I know, the requirements for the system were drawn after the kgb spetsnaz had an experience in the Tajbeg palace assault at the beginning of soviet-afghan war. The main silent weapon for sneaky operations was an akm with pbs and subsonic ammo (the combination is still being used today in russian army), but it has a poor distance and stopping power. Also it takes a time to deattach the silencer and change magazine to the one with regular cartridges if it's necessary. Engineers have tried to make vintorez and val in 7.62x39mm at first, but then decided to create a new subsonic cartridge with heavier bullet for the system.

@@alijankhan3330 there seems to be a problem with modern ak silencers, but cycling with an original pbs-1 was working fine. It also may depends on cartridges and gas tube settings though. Looks like I was wrong about distance and stopping power of subsonic 7.62x39 system, the main trouble seems to be a pbs itself. The suppressor had an outdated design, it's just a tubes with rubber wibes. Theese rubber wibes had a short lifetime of 20-50 shots, then it's accuracy drops drastically. And the first shots with new rubbers runs randomly, the rifle's aiming should be rearranged again.

definition of sniper - concealed shooter. Range does not dictate a sniper rifle but helps with concealment. The Russians spetnaz also utilize a rifle called the SV-99 which is toggle lever or straight pull bold action chambered in 22lr and is fully suppressed. They head shoot and or aim for gaps in body armour up to a maximum range of 200m which is more than enough to kill someone.

It's a fancy integrally suppressed assault rifle that put's on a long range optic to feel like a sniper rifle. When it comes to ranges and magnifying optics in conflicts, many people have some very unrealistic perceptions as i had them. When i was younger i thought that i would surely pick the rifle with the longest range and the highest precision if i had to choose in the case of a war. Imaging myself camouflaged in the woods and equipped with a good old bolt action rifle, because the effective range of them beats the effective range of cold war era rifles by far. Than i learned that nato estimates about average combat ranges in europe was something around 150 meters and how important follow shots are. Warfare seems to be not the cool sniping from a secure position, but more like not got fucked over while moving and fighting it out in close ranges. I also remember the time when the G36 with the build in magnifying optics got into service and so many people were complaining about the scope and the inferior caliber compared to the g3. Turned out that you can't see a soldier in camouflage hiding in the scrub on 100 meters anymore with your naked eye and that soldiers using g36 had a huge advantage over soldiers using the unscoped g3.

i have shot this rifle, and i can tell it is impossible to hit a moving target with it. the bullet velocity is very low, it is inacurate, you can hardly hit anything at 400 m distance. the only thing it is good for is sneaking at night. also the bullet has a decent stopping power, it will hardly pierce 4 class armor plate, but you will anyway recieve a severe damage.

Agree with you. Even in India, the MARCOS use it for night ops. Enemy operatives do hear suppressed muzzle report, but since the muzzle flash isn't visible, they stay clueless on where the fire is coming from. Also, this isn't a DMR, or anything like that. It is hardly used for engagements beyond 100 metres.

I would argue the SIG MCX is a close US comparison to the VSS/AS-VAL. It fires subsonic .300 blackout ammo, has rather large rounds with decent stopping power and is fielded by SOCOM, an equally narrow "spec-ops" style circumstance. I'm iffy on the effective range but I'm pretty sure it will accurately reach into 300m with the LVAW config used by the seals. Edited: spelling.

Aside from arguments over semantics, .300 AAC, .300 Blackout, .300 Black, 7.62x35mm, are all synonyms for the same cartridge based off of it's predecessor the .300 Whisper. I'd agree that a short suppressed .300 Blackout AR variant, or the SIG MCX variants with integral suppressors, with an added LPVO (maybe 1-4x or 1-6x), using the heavy subsonic 220gr .300 bullets would be the closest US/NATO equivalent. As you mentioned the MCX is already in limited SF use by our SEAL teams, as well as their allied UK counterparts in the SAS and SBS, have adopted the MCX as well. To my knowledge, The Honey Badger was a prototype produced in very limited numbers, like the KAC PDW in 6x35mm, maybe a dozen made at most, that never really saw anything more than maybe one or two field trials, but the MCX is definitely the most successful platform aside from modified AR-15s to use the .300 Blackout. Plus unlike most ARs, you can fit a side folding stock (making it even closer to the AS VAL and also the AR-18, the original system the MCX is based on) since it's a short stroke gas piston operated gun, yet does not need any buffer tube whatsoever. You throw on a LPVO (1-4x, which would be pretty close to the fixed power modified PSO-1 scope used on the VSS/VAL.), or even a Trijicon ACOG on there? And you have a very close western analog. Still, I will give props and respect to the designers of the rifle and the cartridge. They were definitely ahead of their time and offered a clever solution to a weapon that many special forces teams around the world found themselves needing. A compact close range rifle for urban/CQB covert operations with better ballistics and accuracy than a pistol or an MP5SD, armor penetrating capabilities, and with the lowest noise/flash signature possible. Thirty years later, the west improved upon what the Russians started with the 9x39, and .300 Blackout was our answer. Not only can you use the slow and heavy subsonic bullets in the .300, you can also use supersonic full power ammo for when discretion/stealth is not required or body armor is a factor, plus you gain 7.62x39mm like ballistics even out of SBR length ARs. The VAL and the VSS were never designed to use anything other than slow and heavy subsonic bullets in 9x39, as far as I know the Russians have never made or issued 9x39mm supersonic ammo. Still, the 9x39 was in my opinion, without a doubt, influential to the design and the success of the .300 Blackout cartridge.

This thing would dominate urban warfare. You don't need extreme ranges in urban warfare , you need stealth. With a suppressor and scope , you essentially have an invisible sniper that can take out enemies without being noticed.

I'd say so. AFAIK 300 Blackout is a 5.56 case necked up to a 30 cal bullet and this is a 7.62 X 39 case necked up to 9mm. Both are intended to make use of bigger slower bullets to work with a silencer.

@@Arcticroberto9376 Subsonic 300 BLK is anemic past 200-300 yards when facing adversaries that are probably wearing body armor. The Russians tried using a subsonic version of the 7.62x39 in the past and discovered this very quickly... ...which is how the 9x39 came into being.

The subsonic game is all about how many grains you can throw out of your barrel. The heavier the bullet, the more effective it will be. The two things that go together to give a bullet energy are velocity and mass, but if the velocity is a constant (subsonic), the only thing you can do to give your bullet more energy is adding more mass. The two ways to add mass are increase caliber or increase length. The longer your bullet gets, the more spin it needs to stabilize, until you run out of room in the cartridge for the bullet. 300BLK is pretty much tapped out at around 260gr, but the 8.6BLK should be good for at least 350gr...and that translates to about a 250ft/lb increase in energy.

The west does have a weapon with a very similar profile: The HK MP5SD. Because of the 9x19mm round it doesn't have the same reach, but these weapons are mainly used within the 100m range anyway. And if it comes to "armour penetrating", we are even better with the HK MP7. Both are simply not classified as "sniper" weapons, but in reality the VSS doesn't fit that description either. It's more "designated marksman" than sniper.

I don't think it can fit for DMR too because the effective range are shorter than 400, while the effective shooting range for DMR is at least 500-600 meters and had enough stopping power.

Special Forces use a Sig MCX surpressed/subsonic 300 Blackout which is the closest comparison to the VSS. MP5SD has the internal suppressor but is different in operation and it's a pistol caliber. Cappy did a recent video on 300 Blackout, very capable package for specific SF requirements.

Some of those video clips of Russians units that had these rifles moved like they knew what they were doing. They were looking out and were communicating. They also had the rest of the go-fast equipment you'd expect on skilled war fighters. I've seen precious little of that in Ukraine. There was a Spetsnaz unit clearing a courtyard near Kiev, but that's about it.

Maybe because we don't have too much army footage? Usually Chechens (their anti-terrorist special forces), the militia, and less often our troops get into the frame. Secondly, specifically these types of weapons are for "special elites".

@@Kinotaurus No that's very false The separatists are no more than like 10% of the Russian force And they are the weakest and most unreliable link in the Russian military structure often used as canon fodder to absorb damage away from the real Russian army in dangerous offensives they will send them first on the attack to recieve all the damage and weaken Ukranian lines and then the real army moves in.... the real Russian army is usually who seals the deal If it was just separatists you wouldn't be seeing thousands of tanks and IFVs and TOS1s and Ka52 helicopters and smerchs and all other top tech Russian weapons all over everywhere lol Unless this is a propganda comment to push the idea of " LPR and DPR are totally independent states with minimal Russian intervention " which i think it is lol

This gun is amazing. It is so quiet a sniper could shot it from a room behind a curtain and the the people next door would never hear it. Perfect for urban sniping where the target is up to 3 soccer fields away. I did some research on this gun for a book a couple of years ago and thought it very cool.

I've been researching this round on and off for a few months, you really should have explained a little better about the weightof the round and rifling of the barrel,personally I would love to do the same thing with the .350 legend however the rifling is not tight enough, however with my own9x19 carbine rifle I have been fairly successful with 158 grain bullets and range up to 100 yards, however it's just for fun and with the shortage of powder and primers I'll resort to more traditional rounds

The weapon ergonomics are very good for this rifle. You pick it up, put it on your shoulder and you are on target! It is awesome to have some sort of suppression when fighting in an urban environment. Sound is amplified by bouncing off walls making you deaf fast and your presence obvious for your enemy. Biggest downside of this rifle is the charging handle on the right hand side and the need for special ammo to be stealthy enough.

I talked to a CATM instructor and he told me that all issue Military pistols and rifles should be suppressed. The reason? Most shooters flinch when their gun goes off and that throws the bullet off target. With a suppressed gun, there is nothing to flinch about or fear the noise of when the gun goes off and shooter accuracy is generally much better. 🧐

Was never an infantry man, I was an artillery fire direction specialist, so not sure my opinion counts here. How much does the US Army or Marine Corps perform the missions this weapon is designed for? Seems to me if any US forces would need something like this it would be "contractors" working for the CIA. How do we know they aren't using something like this if not actually using these?

I think this shows what kind of operations were designated to spetsnaz - to clap people inside the state. Small, silent, so operatives would be able to sneak it covertly, into some Moscow's apartment, shoot target across the street, and no civilian would notice. Sort of in line with Makarov's strong sides.

So... VAL is my 6th load out in the COD mobile. It is pretty much silenced but not too much and has a good amount of firing rate. Its very light weight and takes less bullets to kill. I gotta say its absurdly accurate. I don't know how that translates to real life?🤔
