But I think the fact that we have to guess says a lot.

I think genuineness is the main factor of success for taskmaster. People crave authenticity. That’s why comedy is hard because you almost have to not try to be funny. Put normal be in strange situations or strange people in normal situations and you get comedy. My favorite parts of taskmaster are when you can see Alex laughing on the side. I always prefer that over any parts where he stays in character. That’s why people love to make compilations on KZbin of snl actors breaking character. That authenticity of laughter is contagious. I am really worried about the American interviewer asking about ‘the best’, ‘the worst’, ‘the most difficult’, as if it were a competitive show. No, no! It is a quintessentially British show: five people having a go at something, failing, and laughing at how clumsy they are. It is not about scoring points or winning trophies. The points are useless. The trophies are for kicks and giggles. I am really worrying that an American adaptation would be too competitive, or too serious-but maybe those fears are unfounded and they find two hosts and five contestants, none of whom will take themselves seriously.

Taskmaster can never be a big mainstream hit in the US. The whole premise is to accept you're going to look like a total dork (Alex more than anyone) and I feel that's very much an English thing. Some US viewers adore it, but I feel it will be too unfamiliar to a large audience. There has been a US spinoff and it failed miserably because some of the participants wanted to be the hero, and the funniest bits are where they accept the zero.
