@@MrCh0o I highly recommend the TM podcast. Ed Gamble hosted John to discuss Ep. 3, and Fern for Ep. 4. John & Fern know each other from before TM, and she knew that he had a baby just before filming. So she was trying to explain his weird behavior to Dara as "new dad brain". John in the podcast felt so horrible, because he thought he committed the cardinal sin in comedy - which was "look at me, I'm trying to be funny". And John felt so bad that he was doing all this in front of Dara who is like a legend. Dara also was hyper competitive and wanted to win every task. Later on Greg even has a nickname for Dara. I think they're all good with each other though. This is a great cast and I'm sure they became very close. It's been mentioned that with Dara sitting on one end and Sarah sitting on the other, it's like they're the two parents with their three kids. There's a lot of love there.

Some folks wanted to know more about Fern's breakfast item. I think I can offer an explanation... It's a "Fern" variation on something I've had. Tofu pudding is a real thing in China. It's called "dou hua" 豆花, made of super-soft silky tofu that is as delicate as custard or flan. Southern Chinese like to eat it sweet - it's literally like flan or custard in a sweet soup. I grew up on it as a kid and I'd have it for breakfast or dessert. Northern Chinese like it savory, with soy sauce or meat. The thing is, Fern is vegetarian and absolutely loves Chinese food. I'm a huge fan of Fern, and I heard her on the "Off Menu" podcast hosted by James Acaster & Ed Gamble. One of her favorite Chinese dishes is "Ma La Tang" (Spicy Soup) 麻辣湯. So I think she took the concept of a savory tofu pudding and mashed it with Ma La Tang. She drenched this tofu pudding in a mountain of chili paste & chili oil (which is how you make Ma La Tang. She added some straw mushrooms and pickled radishes (all proper ingredients for a vegetarian) and maybe a poached egg. It's a weird result, and I would say it's a "Fern Special" (Ma La Tang + Dou Hua). Definitely not traditional, but still all-Chinese ingredients. Now, another type of breakfast soup is just simply a bowl of soy milk, served hot. Traditionally, we Chinese eat a bowl of soy milk (dou jiang 豆漿) for breakfast, with a fried noodle (you tiao 油條). With this bowl of soy milk, you can eat it sweet (with syrup) or savory (with soy sauce, chili, and a bit of pickles in it). The savory version can turn into a soup-like consistency if you add a bit of vinegar which curdles the soy milk, and it's absolutely wonderful. Fern is amazing. She even knows a bit of Chinese despite her incredible accent. I'd introduce her to my mom anytime. BTW one of her best friends is Phil Wang.

The one thing I couldn't take seriously when she talked about why she loves Chinese cuisine was that she said something like "Chinese people care about texture and not flavor" and even with my very very small knowledge of Chinese cuisine and culture knew that was completely wrong and way too sweeping of a statement about a country of over a billion people who are also famous for having an infinite number of vastly different cuisines. There are cuisines where spicy or savory or fishy flavors are the defining traits far more than textures. It's funny you bring up "Ma La Tang" because as I'm sure you know "Ma La" numbing spiciness is the defining trait of Sichuan cuisine and not texture at all.

She didn't realize that her friend's side gig was designing S&M outfits. Fern used to be a stripper when she was attending university, so her friend probably used that as inspiration for the outfit. Phil also talks about his outfit in the podcast. Because of the way TM films tasks, Phil did all his solo tasks in the jumpsuit and he never realized how genital-hugging it was. The cameramen, Alex, & the producers all knew, never said a thing, and held their laughter because it was going to be comedy gold. Finally, when the team tasks were filmed later, Rhod & James were LOL'ing and that was when Phil saw how bad it was. If anything, the only similarity is that Fern and Phil both accidentally ended up with scandalous outfits and both knew they were gonna be TM comedy gold.

The saboteur bit was fantastic. But it shows how difficult it is to get that kind of thing right. There was genuine tension between John and Dara and Fern, mainly at the end of the task, but also more subtly in the studio (after that resentment had been brewing for four months) when the uber-competitive Dara found out he had lost - you somehow have to be able to pull it back and keep it light comedy. They did a great job, and I hope they use it again, but it's a bit unpredictable how it might play out.

Dara is what we thought Paul and Victoria were gonna be. Mae is great at Taskmaster. I like competition and everything but overall I want to have fun and laugh. Noel and Mel making a sandwich is by far my favourite moment in TM history.

I’m increasingly convinced - especially if he wrote Greg’s introductory remarks to this episode - that Alex is a spree thrill-criminal by night; blending into the crowd by day, but once the sun sets, shoplifting from Tesco, picking pockets, torching abandoned properties, and stealing police cars … anything to feel alive!! Alex, please seek help.

Losing my mind at the start of the ice cream task where John barges in, coat thrown to the floor, frantically opens the task as he stares at Alex with madness in his eyes, simply giggles maniacally after Alex tries to point out the ice cream, and then finally looks at the ice cream and goes "ooo!"

This is by far and away my favorite episode! Seeing the animosity between John, Dara and Fern is beautiful! All the evil intentions of my soul come alive during the betrayal segment. I laugh every time and almost pee myself.

No matter how many times I rewatch this, I still nearly have a stroke laughing in exasperation every time John pours/spills the hat and tube while saying “I thought it had to be in one thing!!” The perfect patsy and Alex played him like a fiddle.
