‘Snooker’ with a short ‘oo’ certainly is a word in any land, namely the land of Wales, as Rob Brydon has pointed out on ‘Would I Lie to You?’ And Désirée makes a good point that if a word isn’t used in American English she has to arbitrarily choose which British pronunciation to use.
@scottyslearningcorner6080 Жыл бұрын
I've actually never heard this word pronounced out loud until this very youtube video and I was so surprised at how the British pronounce it. For whatever reason Snooker is pretty unheard of here. It seems like pool but different? But I think for US Americans who sometimes watch British TV I'm surprised to here it because I only ever read it occasionally on Wikipedia the featured article will be a Snooker player. But the funny thing is that even though I have only seen the word like on a list of sports and stuff there is a way that Desiree and I both pronounced it is what google says is the American pronunciation. And that's interesting to me. Because I think Americans say Snooker significantly less. But there are lots of interesting things that exist in the difference between British and American English. i can see either being surprising but I also feel like there is a rule involved somehow. Like how if there is a word from outside of English that comes into English, British people will say it in a specific way that is different than American people even though both would sound off to the people in the language that originated the word would say it. Like Cafe is said differently in British and American English and I think French people would find either pronunciation to be varying a bit from how they would say this word they made to describe a thing coming from Arabic I think. IDK
@scottyslearningcorner6080 Жыл бұрын
although I'm sure that Desiree, having lived in the UK for a bunch of years probably has heard it to me it' just interesting because I am from the United States. I have never even seen a Snooker table in real life. I have only read the word in like the guiness world records sports section and on Wikipedia. But, having never heard this word said out loud, Desiree's original way of saying it is how I assumed it would be said. And that is supposedly the American pronunciation. But, I mean how even is there an American pronunciation if generally speaking Americans don't say Snooker. I am willing to bet that no one in my building who grew up in the United States has ever said snooker. But we'd all say it the same way probably for a lot of reasons like it looks like looker, booker, cooker etc. But it's more like Snoopy, Spook. kind of thing
@michaelreid322 Жыл бұрын
On the other hand, she's been in Britain long enough to call the letter "z" "zed" rather than "zee", so you'd think she'd have heard the British pronunciation of "snooker" before.
@jazmindodds4 ай бұрын
Well we say zed in Canada. It is far better known than... pool vs snooker lol
@JohnSmith-dh8zx3 ай бұрын
@@scottyslearningcorner6080Yeah as an American, I always read it with the short O. That’s because most words with -ooker are pronounced that way (looker, booker, cooker) but I can’t think of any with a long O.

The balloon one always drives me mad because so long as the rope is in front of you you’re behind it. There isn’t a fixed side of it that makes it in front of or behind you - it’s only defined relative to you. So you just have to face it from the shop/balloon side and then walk backwards till you’re at the balloon.
