The world's first test-tube burger has been revealed in London and tasted by two lucky volunteers who seemed to quite like it! Scientist-turned-chef Professor Mark Post produced the burger from 20,000 tiny strips of meat grown from cow stem cells. The lab-grown 5oz (142g) patty cost £250,000 to produce was fried in a little sunflower oil and butter by leading chef Richard McGeown.
Nutritional scientist Hanni Rutzler said the burger tasted "close to meat" but that it was "not that juicy". Report by Ashley Fudge.

I am vegan too. I do care about animals and the environment and my health. I also occasionally buy soy burger or beyond meat vegan chicken. The argument for a vegan is life, environment, sustainability, ethics and health. If this products is not a problem with either one great. Us vegans should be the first ones to support these businesses as we are looking for animal welfare and not self glory . I would be happy to take a bite of that. I am not against meat eater . I am against killing animals for food.

Unfortunately, a lot of foods are modified for pest resistance, size / weight, shelf life, and durability (for transport). Taste doesn't often enter into the equation as the other factors contribute far more highly to profitability. Tomatoes and many types of apples are examples of foods that have moved to be virtually flavourless over the last 10-20 years.

Foods are often modified to make them taste better. Look to see if theres any evidence to suggest danger caused specifically by genetic modification rather than suggest scary things as a possibility.

If we are actually able to produce meat in the lab, the price of meat will plummet (along with the price of the grains needed to feed the animals). Food will become much, much cheaper. Raising animals is also a huge contribution to rising carbon levels. This is a huge advancement.

Cultured meats have the potential too eliminate most of the waste (in food raised for cows, and their agricultural runoff) as well as deforestation. Done in a controlled environment- void of pollutants. Labs will care if their municipal water source is full of pharmaceuticals and toxins like fluoride- which is perfectly legal to use on organic food sources. They will not be downwind of a city, or a radioactive spewing natural gas/coal plant. Heavy metals from photovoltaic production...

This technology could feed a group of 100 people in a expedition to Mars lasting years by taking a piece of meat inside the ship the size of stake. Permaculture was high technology in the 1970's now it's part of history.

Damn right! As a vegan, mainly for ethical reasons I would consider eating this meat, but not for at least 20-odd years when it's clear there are no long term effects. Btw, the giving away of food that would otherwise be thrown out is down to Tony Blairs love affair with our Health & Safety Executive which spent 13 years teaching us Brits that we needed to be wrapped in cotton wool and stop thinking for ourselves. Sadly, it doesn't show any signs of reversing the mentality.

To assume that this would make you sick is a pretty big leap of logic to make. Certainly, it's good to maintain skepticism about new production methods like this, but there's less reason - based on the constituents - to assume that it will make one sick than to assume that it is safe (although neither black-and-white assumption is really called for, at this point).

Really? That's odd that you chose food as the sole environmental factor to have changed since those rates started climbing, even over the fact that mainly those rates are getting so high because of advancement in technology, giving us better means of detecting it, and the fact that we've identified roughly 200 different types.

It poses difficult problems, though, because of the stupidity of the courts and liability issues. If food that is still largely edible is distributed to the homeless and someone gets food borne illness, lawsuits result against the distributor. It's absolutely absurd that it's safer for an organization to trash their food than to share it with those that need it, but it's the sad truth of today's society. Regardless, growing meat conventionally has many associated problems: this is a solution.

Cazy243 From what I've read it took 325,000 dollars to produce just one patty. Interesting how they dropped the price to 11$ But their saying it will still take 20-30 years to make it commercially available. Which means I have very little hopes in actually eating this burger or even feel safe that it has taken hundreds of thousands of dollars to produce it, but now their reducing the cost of it. I would like to know what procedures they removed to make the cost drop from 300,000 to 10. www.fastcoexist.com/3044572/the-325000-lab-grown-hamburger-now-costs-less-than-12

+Jfreek5050 sorry my phone is acting up. i think that humans, being sapient, are far more valuable than the lives of lesser minded creatures. should we kill off animals to extinction? No. There is no point to that. But i would rather a species go extinct than a human be killed. I dont think humans are the best creatures around , but i do believe that sapience is a trait that makes us superior to all others we know of.

Seeking people solely on the basis of their agreement with you is nothing short of mental masturbation. Why not listen to what people with dissenting opinions have to say and see if you can't learn anything? I have some incredibly strong opinions, but I frequently engage in online debate / argument, because even at the most hostile of times, I am surprised by what I can learn from someone who disagrees with me.

If it's actually as nutritious as regular meat then great....but if it's just like GMO garbage that encompasses most of our food supply and is not nutritious....the screw it!
