This can was manufactured on Friday July 11th of 1980. * please see MH’s website. You can also call them and they will confirm. Prior to 1989, the used specific codes. K stood for 1980. The 193 is for the 193rd day of that year. The 3 digit code underneath was an internal code which after 1989 is used to identify the operator’s initials that packaged the lot. 😃 (Yes, I’m old) 👵🏻

It's actually good to see these companies are removing Hyrdogentaed oils & MSG, etc... but I agree, the cost of freeze dried foods is pretty crazy and it actually makes more sense to invest in a freeze drier with family or friends and just make your own from scratch + the upside in doing this allows people to eliminate questionable ingredients :)

If you look in the basements of some old small town courthouses you might find some 55 gallon cardboard drums that have rations in them from the nuclear scare of the 1950’s. I saw several in the basement of the Graves County KY. courthouse back in around 1985. They were full of survival items that the US government gave to communities across the nation in case of a nuclear strike from Russia. They’re gone now but I’m pretty sure there are some left somewhere in the US.

Eat the whole can? Dude, that’s 27 ounces of freeze-dried meat. Probably twice or more that amount as fresh product, which would be enough, as part of a meal, to feed a small army! I assume that you managed to figure out the actual age of that can by the title of the video. I worked it out this way: the Mountain House website says they started making meals for the US military around 50 years ago- call that 1968. The code on that can- K139- could mean K refers to the year of production, or twelve years after the company was founded, and 139 being the 139th day of that year (May 18 or 19). That would place the date of your can pretty much around the 1980 mark. Great to see that it stood the test of time. The hiss on opening would have had Steve1989 in ecstasy. All the best for the New Year.

Dunno if this kind of thing intersts you, but maybe next time you open such a large portion you should vacuum seal whatever you don't eat and keep it in the tin as a display/museum piece for posterity. Might make for a neat collection, or something to sell as an "artifact" if you hit hard times.

@@Sticky745 Hi, sorry I don't really want to have to go all through the video again, my point was that, if I remember correctly, the date you said you thought the tin was, together with this year 2019, didn't equal the 38 years of the headline for the video. Which was disappointing, because I was really interested. It appears that after the video you must have changed the title but obviously couldn't change the actual video. Hence the discrepancy. So a bit of a misunderstanding. I certainly don't want any argument with you, because I really like and respect you as a reviewer. (I also really like your soothing voice!!!). 🤝
