When it comes to festive vegetarian indulgence here in Namma Bengaluru, one looks forward to a good baale ele oota, a meal that is served on a banana leaf. And a popular one at that is the 20-dish special lunch served at the Gandhi Bazaar, Basavanagudi outpost of Udupi Sri Krishna Bhavan, a vegetarian eatery that first opened doors in 1926. In this episode, I not only savour this special lunch but also step into their kitchen to catch the making of a steamed ‘kadubu’ and the South Canara style rasam, known as the Tilli Saaru, by Ganesh, their ‘adige bhatru’, or chief cook, who has been cooking here for over 40 years. There is something truly auspicious about eating off a banana leaf. I hope you enjoy this episode.
Special Banana Leaf Lunch
This is an indulgent lunch affair representative of the flavours of the Udupi-Kundapura region in most of the 20-dishes that make for a typical baale ele oota offering here. The food is served hot and fresh, and conveys a wholesomeness that is pleasing and satisfying. One begins with a traditional grape juice and mosaru vade, menasinkai bhajji, kosambari, kadubu-chutney, couple of coconut-rich vegetables before proceeding to the substantial mains of poori-saagu, anna (rice) served with tilli saaru and sambar. Servings are unlimited, and the servers are quick and efficient in dispensing refills. Make sure you save space for the desserts, a payasa and hollige, before you close with curd rice, banana and beeda, in true South Canara style.

Kripal, normally you do a fantastic job and I am fan of your channel. Lately however, I've been disappointed with your endorsements of certain institutions which no longer retain their quality or consistency. Case in point your coverage of Bheemas, Nagarjuna and even Meghana foods. Opinions are individual and subjective but when a large number of individual consumers have same opinions...that deserves some merit and weight.

True that the Coastal side of our state has some splendid dishes and has a lot of diverse nature in both veg and and non veg but can't call it the best . Every region has some specials in both veg and non veg except north karnataka, they are only pioneers in the veg and big let down in meaty dishes. Kannadigas are lucky to savour various types of cuisines unlike keralites or tamilians

Satvik food fit for body and soul fit for royals and plebian alike and served on biodegradable disposable natural plates .The leaves add antioxidants and anti cancer agents into the food being taken in and the touch of tradition and spirituality is certainly an added benefit A popular Kannada quiz goes this way A good feast consists of eating leaf( green leafy vegetables salads) kept on leaf( banana leaf) and having another leaf ( beeda panbeeda ) to munch after we get up ! Recipes for the goodies being written on palm leaf manuscript

Hi Sir We really love the smile and your presentation, everything is sheer professional . i started loving food after watching your recomandation. one thing i have observed ,sometimes the menu you get served will not be available to comman customers and also its same with the hospitality. to mention not all hotels have same ethics and hospitality you see . i request you make secret visit or revisit your recomended hotels to check if they still on the same style. sorry ,i know that not your work but we your followers belive you, because we fequently plan family gatherings in the hotels you visit but few hotels were not upto the mark of your standard. sorry its my personal thought, but your work is excellent and please keep it on.

He does go once to the place incognito before taking the crew there, and he takes the crew only if he feels the place is worth it. But it’s inevitable that any establishment will put its best foot forward in front of the camera and that’ll not always be the case with all customers.
@FoodLoversTV
@FoodLoversTV 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Madhusudhan, happy you enjoy our work. The starting point for us when we select an establishment for an episode is what customers think of the place. Do customers love the place, if so, what do they like about the food, favourite dishes, etc....That to us is the most important factor, where we are unsure, I go incognito beforehand, unannounced, when possible. And then take the final call. Walking into an establishment with a production crew unannounced and expecting to be let into the kitchen to film in the manner we would like to, isn't practical, in our opinion. Having said that, would like to reiterate that the stating point for an establishment to be considered is its goodwill amongst customers who frequent the place. To your point, it is possible that sometimes even a good eatery can waver, that's the nature of the product. Cheers!

Ayurveda Sastra suggests that should start with something "meetha", as something takes the longest to digest. Next in line should be sour and last should be something spicy. the item enables the flow of digestive secretions. By pushing the to the last, would slow down your digestion. UKB at Balepete was popular among many Central College faculty members and students in the 50s/60s! Dad used to recollect having seen Sri. G.P. Rajarathnam, the well-known, Kannada literary giant enjoying Poor Saagu here. They were popular for this recipe! Thank you for this coverage, on the Eve of Deepavali. May all of us be blessed with a heathy, safe and peaceful Deepavali!

Kripalamanaji, some of the hotels prepare special for only for you and your team, because you are a celebrity go with your team with cameras. But when a lay man goes food will be totally different. Big example for this is New Modern Hotel, Minarva Circle. Even when we visited Udupi Sri Krishna Bhavan food is very different.

P South Canara people's cooking is as ancient as the Mahabharata. Legend says that the South Canara people were entrusted with the task of cooking for warriors of Mahabharata. They would always cook as per number of people(since many died at the end of the day of the battle) and nothing would be wasted !

@@rao433 true that! I have heard Bheema cooked in the Udupi region during the last year of ‘Agnyathavasa’ and the people of the area were blessed to be great cooks. I personally feel the immense amount of produce, spices available translated to the wonderful food the region developed. I guess this only led to choosing food as a career having grown up on such fantastic fare.
