It's so clear that the school fell down on this. That boy should never have been sent back to class. He and his belongings should have been thoroughly searched and he should have been held in a secure room until authorities dealt with the situation. There have way too many of these shootings not to have treated this with zero tolerance.

Agreed... But read comments elsewhere... From other people... There are many who think that the school staff had no role and nothing that they could do in time. Even Sheriff Bouchard stated that he was puzzled why they didn't call the school resource officer. The county prosecutor doesn't seem like she will be putting any criminal charges forth... Hopefully Fieger and the others can do their work.

@@pn1831 I'd still be a bit wary of what is considered a hint. In Ethan's case it was painfully apparent...hell... He even drew them pictures. I'm not letting him off the hook for what he did... But there were other people... regardless of the parents... Who did nothing for him... And by their doing nothing they let others be killed and hurt. It was a very simple thing that should have been done... Required no training and the authority was already there: search his backpack which was initially left in the classroom, then brought down to the office after a class change...or search his locker. Sheriff Bouchard stated that he was puzzled why they didn't call the school resource officer.

The school counselor failed to properly assess the situation and Ethan. Because of this, he made the tragic mistake of thinking Ethan was suicidal not homicidal. He was grossly negligent and failed to perfom his legal duties. Too busy or lazy? It doesn't matter. There's no excuse for him.

Seems the counselor went with his emotions. Since Ethan had not been on their radar for being a disruptive kid, parents had never been called before. mr Hopkins went with the suicidal ideation rather than a threat to others, kinda like he felt sorry for this kid esp when Ethan started to tell him of the losses he’d had…. The parents failed to be forthcoming with the counselor, they never mentioned any problems their son has, this counselor was in the dark the entire conference, never crossing his mind to search the backpack, never crossed his mind that he was carrying a gun or to call 911… Mr Hopkins got misguided information, w/ the parents lack of being truthful to the school officials, led to this entire horrific ordeal….pulled one over on the that counselor, wow!
@evangeline77x
@evangeline77x 2 жыл бұрын
Because the counselor is a mandated reporter he should have acted, regardless of whether he believed the kid was a danger to himself or others. Particularly in this situation where the child was suddenly exhibiting red flag behaviors that were noticeably 'out of character', suddenly being disruptive, displaying an abnormal preoccupation/fixation with guns/gun violence and making allusions to acts of both self harm and violence against others. All of this should have been taken seriously, especially when the parents refused to cooperate or implement any kind of care plan. At that point it became the school's responsibility to act in the interest and welfare of both the child and the other students in their care. Even if the counselor believed the child was struggling with suicidal thoughts but was not a danger to others, it was still the counselor's responsibility in that moment to protect that child. The school resource officer should have been immediately requested to detain the child and have him brought to a hospital for an emergency mental health assessment. The allusions to suicidal ideation alone were enough to warrant this. Had this day gone differently, and the child gone on to commit suicide on campus the school could/very likely would be held liable for failing to report a suicidal child in their care.

The parents never lied. It was this trained professional's job to ask certain questions. They were never asked by Hopkins if they owned guns. They never asked the parents if they could inspect Ethan's backpack. They were never told Ethan was a threat to others. The counselor failed to perform his legal duties: to properly assess Ethan and the situation in order to ensure student safety. He was lazy, and now it seems like he cares only because he has a guilty conscience. But he doesn't care, or he would come clean and admit responsibility.

@ShutUpAndBump

If he wasn’t sent, it’s probably not Michigan law. He showed signs of having suicidal IDEATION which isn’t the same as being suicidal. You don’t send people to crisis center for ideation, Ethan would’ve had to show clear signs of being a danger to himself. He hadnt harmed himself or anybody else at that nor threatened to so it could only be a recommendation and the parents would be responsible for following through.

The counselor had ZERO RIGHT to check Ethan’s backpack. There was ZERO RIGHT for anyone to search his belongings except police. They would have needed probable cause. If the counselor checked the bag and nothing was there they’d be suing the parents for some kind of wrongful accusations.

I know I haven't heard all of the details, but what I have heard doesn't leave me wondering why he didn't search Ethan's backpack. As a person with Major Depressive Disorder, I've written a lot of self-hatred notes to myself, but I was never a threat to anyone else. Shame on the parents for making light of it until it was too late and shame on the school for not only not checking the boys back pack, but for sending him back to class, back to it. A simple search of that backpack; with the student present, and a witness could have prevented all of this. I worked in a middle school for 21 years. It's not uncommon to do this. It's a risk worth taking. What isnt and is so startling is (school) sending a kid back into the student population who is clearly; and openly screaming for help, because hes never been a discipline problem ... ? Really? School shooters seldom ever are behavior problems. Leave the backpacks in the lockers instead of carrying them for starters and search them if need be while still IN the lockers. Kids can and will learn to manage their books, etc throughout the school day without backpacks when they understand why they are doing it. You have to start somewhere

There's a lot of incompetence that goes on in the public schools. I agree Ethan should have never been allowed to go back to class. He was drawing guns, bullets, dead bodies and the words help me. How many red flags do people need to see before they think maybe it's not a good idea for this kid to go back to class. Also, Ethan's Mother appeared to be more interested in her horses than she was in her own child. Last, but not least, a lot of horrific bullying, goes on in schools and absolutely NOTHING is done to stop it. A kid can snap after year in and year out bullying.
@lydialutz
@lydialutz 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with your first paragraph but I'm not sure bullying is relevant to the conversation. It has been said that there was no evidence of Ethan being bullied and I guess at best we just don't know if he was. Also, while there is not enough done to stop bullying, it isn't helpful to speak in absolutes..."absolutely NOTHING is done to stop it." That's just not true. A lot is done to stop bullying day in and day out by teachers and school staff and peers. Some schools are worse than others regarding bullying and there is a lot more we should do about bullying, but to say nothing is done doesn't acknowledge the active work many are doing to prevent and stop bullying.

One student was bullying me as the teacher with a horrible note he wrote and he received 3 days of out of school suspension *October anti-bullying campaigns within schools where teachers talk about bullying, role play how to stop it, etcetera. October is anti-bullying month. One school I worked in it was a very popular initiative with students and I noticed students trying to be kind because of it. *creating a positive environment where students feel safe and respected, leaders have an influence on the school climate and culture *responding to a bullying moment on the spot *increasing adult supervision in hot spots where bullying is more likely to occur. Adult presence makes a difference. *training staff and students regarding how to respond to bullying *if it is happening on the bus, the administrator can remove the bully from the bus route and parents have to drive them *separating students and then listening to their story *if greater threat of harm exists, call police or school resource officer As I said before, we can do WAY better than we are doing and some schools are worse than others, but the list I put above are things that happen daily to prevent and stand up to bullying.

That’s not fair to the school counselor. He had no knowledge of any gun so why would he look in the backpack. He had information that this kid was suicidal. They should direct their anger to the parents

We all know something went wrong they drop the ball on the Oxford children and the Oxford community the police everybody they should’ve checked his backpack he shouldn’t have been allowed to stay in school and the police should’ve been called they dropped the ball on the school district and the community and that’s why those precious babies are laying 6 feet under they deserve to pay

The school had the obligation to search Ethan's locker, backpac, and him.... If they HAD, he would have been removed from the school by police, and none of this would have EVER happened!!! I hold the school responsible for the death of 4 of their students!!! His parents are a joke; however, all schools should be prepared for this type of situation due to poor parenting scenarios 24-7-365!!!!

We need Red Flag laws passed in this country to empower law enforcement and school officials to stop these attacks. When a student makes a threat of violence against a school or fellow student/s they should not be able to return to that school. Ever.

There are elements in place to prevent school shootings. Shawn Hopkins job is to prevent tragedies like these. He failed to do what he's specifically trained for. The schools need to be held accountable if they're negligent. Which, in this case, they were.

Hopkins failed to perform his legal duties and was grossly negligent. He did not review the evidence he was presented with prior to the shooting. He was too lazy to properly assess Ethan. He misled Ethan's parents when he told them Ethan was suicidal not homicidal, and only recommended therapy. He allowed Ethan back to class without even checking his backpack. This lazy and negligent counselor should be behind bars.

The school counselor did an incompetent evaluation - he assessed suicidality and was exclusively concerned about that. He did no analysis or inquiry into homicidality, a closely related issue.

School dropped the ball. Im sorry but when the teacher found and took a picture of that drawing they had probable cause to search that locker and backpack. There are police at most schools now. They could have got a search warrant to search with the parents in the room while they were there.
