I love how interesting their songs are, honestly. It's not necessarily my favorite genre, but between her insane technique, the band behind her, the constant meter/style changes, the songwriting, the lyrics... You almost have to listen to their songs quite a few times before you start to really understand them lol. I can't be the only musician who gets bored with normal music sometimes 🤷🏻‍♀️

@@ZoeStibiVocalCoach No worroes, it is the community reading between the lines to guess some of thos details. She and Eugene were dating people in Southern California and since everyone in the band already had 6mo US visas they stayed there while Roman, Vlad and Sasha went back to Ukraine, and the two of them who do most of the interviews anyway did a couple of videos there. The cat is her cat with Alex Lopez (drummer of Suicide Silence) named Pepino (her life has been too crazy with constant touring to have a pet before) so we can reasonably guess this was recorded at Alex's house in CA with some black fabric draped as a backdrop.

I love how she uses different vocal colours in different songs. Her cleans in Pisces compared to this song, as well as Perenial and I Speak Astronomy etc. sound different. Tatiana's band mates fuse many genres in their writing, which allows her to spread her "vocal wings" and sing in a style that's appropriate for that composition.

Zoe, extreme vocals are part and parcel of the harder metal genres. It is important to follow the lyrics to better understand why they are used to emphasize meaning. Tatiana is one of a kind and Jinjer's ability to create complex rhythms and syncopation never goes unnoticed. They are all fine musicians. Please do some research into their history and take some suggestions below of a live performance. To paraphrase a very fine teacher I once studied under... "The finest musicians I have ever heard on any instrument are those that not only take the time to learn every aspect of that instrument, but are also able to LOOK AWAY FROM THE SCORE and FEEL THE SOUL of the music". This teacher's name was Ralph Gomberg (oboe) and this was the most important lesson I ever had! Tatiana, Roman, Eugene, and Vlad have also learned that lesson!

If you ever have the opportunity to watch Jinjer live do it. I waited for over two years to see them and they are world class artists. When you watch them live you can tell it is not pre recorded and played while they act and her voice is 100 percent real and not some effect. Yes there are effects, but none more than other artists use regularly and I am not talking about pitch perfect or anything like that, just a little reverb and echo etc... The next Jinjer concert I am able to attend I am going to take a better camera because the audio my phone recorded is horrible and doesn't do justice to the performance in real life.

I don't think that Tatiana's "acting" the expressions of her face and body on purpose to entertain us whilst she's singing easily and almost boring. Basing on the experience of dozens viewed performances I can assume that Tatiana always expresses herself during the performance. It's like... you know, like Italian people should involuntarily gesticulating hands while talking. And I'd say that's my favourite Tatiana's feature. She's never just singing, not just producing some sound. Tatiana's expressing herself in performing. And singing is just a part of the whole performance. She's impressively good in singing to put it mildly. But moreover she has such a good stage presence that this combination makes her a worldclass performer. And we are not talking about how good Tatiana is as a lyricist. She's the author of most Jinjer's lyrics. Pay attention to it, it worthwhile.
@Dilligff
@Dilligff 3 жыл бұрын
I think that is part of what makes her so special, is she isn't just 'singing' but genuinely getting into the moment. Less of a deliberate and conscious act and more of a natural emotiveness that elevates her performances.

I know that everyone keeps recommending Perennial as the next song (just because it's an awesome performance). But from a singer / singing-technique point of view, I'd say you DEFINITELY have to watch the official video for "Teacher, Teacher". In that song, Tatjana keeps doing those extreme switches between clean and growl WITHIN single lines of the song, without any breaks between the two styles. And also in that song, she uses an awesome amount of different singing styles throughout the whole thing, from somewhat spoken-wordy, to pop-like, to growl, to jazzy, and then very smooth and warm at the end. Even if you don't do a video on it, do yourself a favor and watch it at least.

"Cupping" of the mic is often looked down upon by metal singers as a cop out to make your voice bigger and Tati rarely does it. Even though when asked in an interview, she said she likes to cup the mic, she was actually referring to simply holding the head on the mic (her hands are small and she said she feels like a wedding singer if she holds the neck - LOL) and not full on cupping her hands around the mic to make the sound bigger. She does do this occasionally but not as often as you would think given her small frame and achieving such a low, aggressive sound.

Usually I wouldn't respond to negative comments but I feel that it just puts down teachers in general. I do not mind if you are referring to me, do what you must, however teachers are usually (in music anyways when you have a good one) highly skilled performers. Floor Jansen for example is a voice teacher, would you say she is an incapable singer? Wishing you a lovely day.

Would you consider something that has been processed as being live? I think we just have different definitions. I think this has been edited to suit. I get the "all in one take" thing but as soon as your voice goes through a computer there is no way to tell what is really going on.
@ZoeStibiVocalCoach

@k o a l I feel as though your general tone is one of dislike for my video therefore I am not going to try and convince you of my point. I think we are past that from what I can see. What I would say is that for aspiring singers they hear this performance and try to recreate the same level of sound that she does and therefore they over push because it sounds extremely loud. I merely wanted to point out that singers should know that there is no way to create such a stable sound without the plugins from the computer. You need the microphone. Anyways I never mentioned inauthentic, so that is something that is being read into my comments. Have a great day.

The way people define "live" as no effects or audio engineering involved is inaccurate and unrealistic. I've done live sound and studio work and I've never seen vocals left raw with no processing whatsoever. Always some reverb, usually some compression delays chorus etc. Saying a recorded performance isn't live because a small amount of industry standard processing techniques were used is silly it's a recording. If you go to see a band live I guarantee you you are not hearing a raw voice with absolutely no effects unless it's strictly acoustic singing and instruments with no amplification whatsoever

She cups the microphone in her performances which is what I was getting at. Due to the compression there is no way this isn't fiddled with. It sounds far too similar. Just my opinion though, we shall never know unless we ask her.

@@ZoeStibiVocalCoach Every sound engineer no matter if it's a live production or a recording will probably use compression, EQ and adjust levels and in this case mix the vocals to fit with the backing track. Tools of the trade IMO. Don't think it's taking anything from her performance. Nowhere do they claim it isn't fiddled with. I think youtube would be quite different if people where uploading raw unprocessed audio. It would be a lot easier for sound engineers if more musicians had a basic understanding of music production. As for cupping the mic. She does sometimes cup the mic when they perform live, but in this video I don't think it qualifies as cupping. In fact she seems to be careful to only touch the mic mount, as cupping a condenser mic would not have any positive effect on the sound.
@cognitiveharmony
@cognitiveharmony 3 жыл бұрын
@@ZoeStibiVocalCoach There is no drop in the upper harmonics that would be seen with cupping in this recording. It would be pretty obvious with this microphone. This recording has compression like virtually every single recording you will ever hear and likely some eq to clean up the microphone dynamic range and that is all I am hearing. I am not even hearing reverb. Likely some dampening of popped P's etc.. in post as well. Digital recording almost always has compression due to the intricacies of the technology. Most DAWs have compression on every channel without you even knowing it to stabilize the sound. Any live or studio sound engineer who has a clue will have at least some compression on a vocalist. And unless she is the greatest lip syncer I have ever seen, and I have seen alot, her performance here is the actual recording. I have also seen Jinjer live and have seen her growl with and without cupping. She doesn't need it but does use it at times. When I first saw this video, I was extremely impressed that they had only done the bare minimum to capture the sound with the general intent to only fix what the technology added and needed to sound closer to real life (noise cleanup, compression and eq). I am a former professional sound engineer (multiplatinum acts) and I think this recording is about as real as you can get while still sounding professional and not like someone who just plugged a mic into their computer and started singing, which sounds horrible no matter how good the singer. Now the Jinjer Pisces "Live Session" is straight up a studio recording with all the dubs, layering, post processing etc... still awesome though.

@@cognitiveharmony thank you so much for sharing your insight. Happily stand corrected! Great that she can still make it without cupping, obviously the compression gives us the impression that her growl is louder than it probably is... although I would need to hear her do it in front of me to really be 100% certain. Thank you for your thoughtful comment and I always love learning new things from those who know more than I do. Stay healthy and have a great day!
