I've watched you do these critiques many times and I honestly have to applaud you for sticking to your principals and actually 'critiquing' the work rather than pander to the audience, artist or collector. I have a lot of shitty tattoos I got in very close succession when I was young. I'm in the process of lazing at the moment and I find your insights invaluable as I am in the process of researching artists so I have actual 'art' on my body rather than.. the crap I have now.

You should make a video on how to choose an artist like what to look for in their portfolio, style, art etc
@DentsutXD5 ай бұрын
Zoom in the photos, look for consistency in line work, style and shading etc. If the pictures are heavily edited that's a red flag. Same if the skin is really beat up in every picture. Healed pictures are also a green flag. You can see how the ink holds up. Keep in mind that not everyone heals the same so if there's a few that have faded way more than others it might not be the artists fault. Also if you see pictures that seem way better than other (design wise) you should google it and see if they ripped it off from somewhere. Like Pony said, the place you take the pictures in is important. If they post pictures in a clean environment it doesn't necessarily mean they tattoo in a studio space but if they post pictures in random rooms it's probably a home tattooer. I'm a home tattooer too but I have a separate room thats only for tattoos. No one else than me and my clients go in there. It's kept clean even if not in use. Anyways you should also ask around and get some reviews. And probably one of the most frequent mistakes clients do is that they go to an artist that mainly does old school tattoos and ask for semi realism or something different and then the piece doesn't turn out as well as the other ones due to it not being the artist's main style. A good artist would refer you to an artist that specializes in that specific style. However some artists want to broaden their skillsets and experiment with other styles BUT they should inform you about them wanting to try it out and not being a pro at it.😅

I kind of appreciate the butterfly/cat face for being a simple take on the most overplayed subjects because I've not since this style before, and there's SO much room to improve it. At a minimum, it would be great if there was a round line, like a smile, to complete the butterfly bottom (it's missing a butt) and it would match proportion to the cat's face, looking like a tongue.. and, add a parallel line along the outside frill of the upper left wing, and one on the inside of the frill for the upper right wing. This will get the wings to equal size and enhance the simple design. 🤌
