Enjoyed this interview a lot. So ridiculous that Tavis experienced what he did because of "cancel culture." Folks, he's so right about the genius of Michael Jackson. I never knew the extent of just how talented & gifted he is until I started watching Chris Liepe's YT channel. He's got a variety of never heard before live studio recordings of MJ, which showcases just how multitalented and brilliant Mike was as a musician in and out of the studio. He & Prince both are musical geniuses, and I can't think of anyone else who comes close to what they were. MJ did his thing with dignity, class & integrity; none of this degrading, raunchy, low-rating mess on the scene nowadays. Thanks for the golden nuggets spilled, Mr. Smiley. I hold you, MJ, Prince and Ali in high regard and thank God for each of you.
@divineintervention2122 жыл бұрын
Michael Jackson was a little raunchy at times. He grabbed his little MJ a lot on stage. Prince was all about the raunchy in his younger days. That's ok though because they both had multiple visions and styles of music. I get what you mean though because many newer artists can't do anything else but be raunchy. Meg and Cardi are successful for nothing else but raunchy content. I don't think it's the artists though. Music does and always has had a mesmerizing effect to it. If you want people to have a dysfunctional existence, give them a soundtrack to promote their dysfunction. I'm not that old and I remember when being the neighborhood harlot was a shameful thing. Now girls seriously think onlyfans modeling is a positive career decision.😕 How can you expect positive outcomes for these kids ,when they mommas bussin it open for likes in the other room while they trying to do homework.😂

@TheKing_Originalman2 жыл бұрын
@@musiclove5935 you are obviously stupid and don't know anything about Prince. His art is what makes him the greatest. He played over 27 instruments and wrote, produced,played all the instruments, sung lead and background vocals on both of his first albums, and The Time as well. His art is why he wrote songs for Shelia E. Andre Cymone,Madonna, The Bangles,Chaka Khan,Kenny Rogers, Pattie Labelle, Mavis Staples, Miles Davis, George Clinton, Chuck D,Eve,Dougie Fresh,etc. That is just a small sample of people he worked with because of the respect they have for him and his art.

"many couldn't see past his appearance" big facts. That's like the first and main thing people used to, and even now to a much lesser extent, criticize him for. Prince referred to Michael as a frenemy at one point. I think I saw him on The View years ago and they asked him about MJ and that was his response. Over the years, they knew each other and had friendly competitions (basketball, ping ping, etc) but they stayed in their respective lanes. Prince was a musician and MJ was a showman/entertainer, both of them excelled at what they did. People don't realize one of, if not the very first nationwide tour that Prince ever went on was opening up for The Jacksons. From my understanding, Michael wanted Prince to open for them. This was before Prince had hit it big. Prince was brought in by Motown to audition for a record deal. I can't remember if they offered him a deal or not but he ended up on Warner Bros cause he would have more control over his image. I think this was either right before or just as Prince was releasing his debut album. Anyway, MJ liked what he heard from Prince's Motown audtion and wanted Prince to open for them. Their history goes back awhile and they were both JW.

Mike may have not been a musician the way Prince was..because he didn't play instruments..but if you know anything about what he did in the studio, he was definitely more than just someone who sang other people's songs. He would literally beatbox or lay out the idea for the music with his mouth and collab with the producers on ideas and the way the music and vocals were going to go. He was a genius as well, just not the same type of musical genius as Prince.

Michael and Prince both was a musical genius
@zroy92632 жыл бұрын
PRINCE was a musician, performer, bandleader, songwriter, arranger, composer, producer, singer, and visionary! Michael Jackson was also brilliant. But he was only a singer and performer. Albeit an extraordinary talent in both. However, in my opinion that doesn't make him complete. Therfore he was not a musical genius. I would consider James Brown and George Clinton musical geniuses, because like PRINCE, they were both visionaries, bandleaders, arrangers, songwriters, vocalists, performers, and composers. They changed the entire landscape of music as art! Michael Jackson was awesome. But he was only the King Of Pop.
@leroysmith87412 жыл бұрын
@@zroy9263 As a truly primary Prince fan I must correct you. MJ was brilliant in his musical ear and ability to create a show. A performer who only only sings dances and choreographed is hardly incomplete. There have only been 3 Men ever called the King of Pop. Elvis Bowie and MJ. Prince was a great musician. Perhaps one of the greatest of all time next to Stevie Wonder. But Pop music isn't just what's popular it combines multiple musical genre's to be interesting. Elvis combines blues soul and rock. MJ R&B Soul sometimes rock and jazz overtones thanks to Quincy Jones. Prince was an artist all to himself especially live. He could simply play it all. Honorable mention to Ray Charles Soul Rock and Country. MJ was the greatest entertainer. Prince the most versatile and possibly greatest musician. All of them created music no one else could have.
@zroy92632 жыл бұрын
@@leroysmith8741 It's very difficult for me to believe that you're primarily a PRINCE fan, if you actually believe that Michael Jackson could be mentioned in the same breath in terms of musical brilliance. You admitted, that the great composer and arranger, Quincy Jones was responsible for Michael Jackson's success as an artist. OFF THE WALL was easily his best solo album by far! Michael Jackson grew up around music. So I agree that he had an understanding of what great music sounds like. But the question is, could he actually go in a recording studio and create that music himself? Could he pick up multiple instruments and create sounds? Or can he write ALL of his music? The answer to these questions are HELL NO! Michael Jackson was a showman. Pure and simple! He was an excellent vocalist, and that was his greatest strength! And of course, the dude was an amazing performer! A true James Brown disciple from day one! There weren't very many artists that could fade him on that level! I'm also a huge Michael fan. But did he literally change the landscape of musical art and style? I would say no. The e big difference between Michael and PRINCE, is that Prince, could walk into a recording studio ALONE and play all the instruments, write all the lyrics to the songs, perform the lead and backing vocals, the hand claps, then produce, arrange, compose, perform, and even engineer a top ten work of art, that will also change the sounds and styles of music, and stand the test of time! Dirty Mind, Controversy, and 1999 are perfect examples. PRINCE was also an electrifying performer, and band leader as well! One of the greatest ever. This cat had so much presence on stage! You could see and hear the influences of James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone, Duke Ellington, Ray Charles, and Little Richard, in his style on stage. Michael Jackson's music was bubble gum next to Prince's art period! That's why he hung out with children. They could relate to that Peter Pan bullshit! PRINCE's genius was comparable to Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, Sly Stone, Ray Charles, James Brown, Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, Johnny"Guitar" Watson, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Curtis Mayfield, BOOTSY, and George Clinton. Because all of these artists changed the landscape of music! They were influential. You mentioned Elvis in this conversation. I'm a bluesman. So I really dig Elvis Presley as well! I believe that he was the greatest WHITE blues singer ever! This cat was funky and greasy as hell! I could imagine ELVIS eating chicken and waffles, with some Louisiana hot sauce on the side. His band was smokin' as well. He was also a great showman. But let's face it. The dude couldn't write a song to save his life! He also faked playing the guitar! Scotty Moore was the badass guitar slinger in his band. And in terms of style, he totally ripped off the Black blues singer! So what I'm trying to tell you is that PRINCE was a BADASS DUDE!!! He was a cocky little muthafucka because of that fact! He knew that there weren't very many people in this planet that could compete with his ROYAL PURPLE BADNESS! There will NEVER be another one like him period! Even Michael Jackson had to have known that!

PRINCE and MJ! Love them both! But being a saxophonist I'm a bit more partial to PRINCE! BECAUSE I THINK HE WAS THE GREATEST ALL AROUND MUSICIAN IN BLACK MUSIC! I know what it takes to learn one instrument but for a guy to learn and master 27 different instruments is truly AMAZING! PRINCE WOULD HAVE NEVER NEEDED QUINCY JONES! Infact NO ONE EVER produced PRINCE! The liner notes on EVERY ALBUM always read the same. WRITTEN, ARRANGED, COMPOSED, PRODUCED and PERFORMED by PRINCE! Not only is he responsible for a multitude of POP CLASSICS but also several ARTISTIC MASTERPIECES! Personally, I think SIGN O' THE TIMES by PRINCE is MUSICALLY and SONICALLY THE GREATEST ALBUM EVER though PURPLE RAIN was more popular. But I also think MARVIN GAYE'S ,"WHAT'S GOING ON" , STEVIE WONDER'S, " HOTTER THAN JULY " are in that same Stratosphere artistically. MJ never did anything as artistically acclaimed. But I agree with everyone here about MJ's showmanship even though I think because PRINCE has no holes in his game his showmanship is vastly underrated! REST IN POWER TO BOTH LEGENDARY MEN!
@Akumaten12 жыл бұрын
Perhaps Prince may have never needed Quincy, but by all accounts Quincy is a MUCH better producer than Prince. So it would not have hurt him whatsoever. Michael saw that greatness and wanted it for his music. Part of being Great is knowing when to be a team player. Even the other GOAT MJ🏀, For all MJs high flying theatrics and ball handling talents, the Bulls still got knocked out the first round and didn't win any chips the first few years. He had to learn to work with others...and when he did, the Bulls got 6 chips, in 2 3peats, within 1 decade. 🐐 And with Jackson and Jones you got 3 of the BIGGEST SELLING records of all-time. Which all 3 eclipsed all of Prince's 39 records... For Prince's production skills, he apparently had no quality control. Doing things yourself means you are only as good as what YOU produce. Btw, Purple Rain was done by him AND THE REVOLUTION (meaning he didn't do it by himself). Prince had 39 studio albums....39. That's almost as many albums then our feet and toes combined...and yet, I can count on 1 hand how many of his records actually were successful. Prince was a great all around artist no doubt and his talents were something to behold! But Michael Jackson was something else entirely.....of which the world has never seen before or ever will see again. Shame how he was treated...😔

He didn’t have a seat at the table like Mike did since he was a kid. Prince made his own way because he didn’t come in with a team (which is why Mike was a great team player.. now peep the downside of that, when he didn’t want to play for the team anymore, they tried to destroy his image, whereas, Prince destroyed the image they tried to give him and said he WOULDNT be a slave.
