Just to clarify because some people are confused and they're saying that I did not mention "the standard deduction". This video is about how "tax brackets work", not about "how taxes work". The starting point for tax brackets is "taxable income" not gross/total income (total income minus deductions = taxable income). I will make a video about "how taxes work" in addition to this video about "how tax brackets work".

@funtechu

@@Tien1million No they don't. They may be withheld at a different rate, but they are still taxed as ordinary income. So if they are withheld at a higher rate you would just get the money back at tax refund time (or you could adjust your W4 witholding if you don't want to wait).

@@funtechu Guess I'll need a new tax guy, because I never got any of those tax back. Every time I work overtime my paycheck show I'm at a higher bracket. I just watched Brian's latest video. Our social security retirement that we were taxed every year gets taxed too. So we have to literally pay taxes on the same money that we already paid tax on 🤯. These Politicians are sneaky 🤦 Brian, did I sum that up correctly?
@fr9714
@fr9714 Ай бұрын
No. The social security is taken out pre tax from your paycheck. You pay tax on withdrawals which is the first time you’re paying tax on it. It’s called social security taxes but the amount is pre tax removal from your paycheck.

Good breakdown. One other thing that people are often confused about is they think "taxable income" is the same as your income. However, your taxable income is after either your itemized deductions or standard deduction is subtracted. So effectively at least the first $12,500 of your income is taxed at 0% which means your effective tax rate is even lower.
