Rent is tricky and varies wildly. Still 191k per classroom minus rent and utilities is crazy. How much are bookshelves and tables? Not much. If you just have one book, you'll save all kinds of cash. Where do I sign? Only difference will be the books, I'd have a mountain in every subject and demand a ton of book reports to burn time. Libraries throw them out by the dumpster load these days. Given the expense of private schools and the fact that most parents want their children to receive the best education possible, I would think that private schools are self-vetting in that parents will check their credentials before sending their children to them. Probably the reason Title of Liberty closed so quickly after becoming private was that it offered such poor quality education that it could not generate enough "business" to stay afloat. I received my education in a public school. In retrospect, the education I received there was extremely poor. A University education pretty much made up for it. The main problem with public education is the smothering politics that are involved--which are largely absent in private schools--and the fact that public education lumps bright, energetic students with the dull-witted, unmotivated students, and everything in between, and it caters to the lowest class so as to "keep everyone moving along." This has an effect on the quality of the teachers also in that, to a large extent, only people who are lacking in motivation to teach will work in pubic schools. This was my experience in that most of the teachers gave us busy-work to do rather than genuinely attempting to teach anything. I was in mid-level management for my career and am now retired. I lived and worked in a medium size city that had several private schools--some religious affiliated and some not. Hands down, the performance of the employees who graduated from the private schools were superior in intelligence, education, and, most of all, motivation, to those who graduated from the public schools. I do agree that people who attend private schools tend to be associated with others of their own background and "social class"; whereas those who attend public schools have more interaction with people of a variety of viewpoints, cultures, and religions.

If Governor Abbott has his way, Texas will be going down the same voucher rabbit hole as several other states. It will be similar to Arizona. Families already sending their kids to private schools or homeschooling them will get most of the voucher money (free money for them). There are a few good private schools but they are quite expensive (way more than the vouchers will pay for) and have rigorous entrance requirements. So, poorer students wishing to go to a private school will have to choose from the lower echelon of available private schools that likely provide a substandard education and have no accountability. Abbott is receiving millions of dollars to his campaign fund from billionaires who are pushing vouchers. Texas has a limit on the number of public charter schools that they will approve. But, there are quite a few charter schools that open up at multiple locations operating under the same charter. But, at least these charter schools have some accountability from the state although they can hang on for years with financial improprieties and/or poor educational outcomes before being shut down or sanctioned.

@@stylesrj down that road feudalism lies sure, dad might want their kid to take over the farm... but thats not his call - and not giving the kid a broad education is deliberately limiting the kids options... its forcing that choice on the kid by taking away most other options PS: but i generally agree - there are absolutely valid situations where homeschooling makes sense or might be necessary (for example for kids with severe auto-immune disorders or forms of neurospicyness that would be constantly overstimulated in a normal school environment) but as you said - when its done, the state has a responsibility to ensure that the education provided in that case is at least meeting the minimum standards for kids finishing a public school

My [parents paid 100% of the tuition and local school taxes. I never heard them complain about anything except how bad the local schools were because every 6 months they had to restart the classes because of military family turnover. Corporate media is then required to adhere to that same "acceptable" range of messaging to maintain advertiser appeal and government access. Stagnant wages, crippling inflation, gutted organized labor movement, etc. etc. On the demanding better schools point, our electoral system is rigged to produce these outcomes. The parties are owned by the donors and the parties choose the candidates. Regardless of who you vote for, their actions are necessarily locked into whatever is "acceptable" within the narrow confines of the interests of capital. (Splitting into 2 comments because KZbin.)
