Wow, I was thinking about the Mantis until I saw the comments (and evidence) of a MASSIVE problem with leaking. That is an absolute deal-killer for me! I camp a lot in inclement weather and there is no way I'd be OK with that amount of water intruding into my living space!
@Steve-yo4ld4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for doing the update. The Mantis was on my top 5 list 3 minutes into your video it's not even a consideration. The starting price on the 2021 Mantis is $50,000.00 USD. There is no way for that much money should it leak. Good luck on your adventure and God Bless you both😉
@DustTheNation4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if that's just MSRP or the actual price people are paying for these days but for $50k, we wouldn't even consider a Mantis. It was already on the higher side 2 years ago. $30-35k is the sweet spot in our opinion.

For that kind of money, look at a Black Series HQ12. I have the Black Series HQ21 and they're both built with the same attention to detail and are the most capable off-road units available in the US. I agree, for $50k anything that leaks is a non starter.
@dmitry79083 жыл бұрын
Starting price for these is $46,000.The issues you described would be understandable for a $15,000 trailer, not a a 50K unit. Good luck with it, hopefully there’ll be no other issues. I was mildly interested in a Cricket as a concept, but the hobo-level milk crates, the lame tiny sink and stove, the absence of ergonomic galley shelving for utensils and spices, all were turn-offs.
@TedBourke-jv2wg2 ай бұрын
You guy’s are incredible, thank you for your very transparent feedback, by just saying it as it is. I love the design concept also, it’s awesome. Am disappointed with the leaks, sink/hob design, door drop, potential head injuries from laser cut aluminium, drafts, lack of insulation and poor AC performance. This product is sold with a sense of engineering excellence, however all the issues you have listed suggest otherwise. It’s encouraging the newer models appear to be addressing these. It might be an idea that you are given one of these newer models for review considering how much you love them. Keep up with your incredible adventures 👍

The new 2023 Taxa Mantis 5.1 is a completely different animal. The new multi-use "flex" shower space is so much better in the new models, and it really gives you a lot of space to work with. I recommend going and seeing one. In the old models, you sort of lost the space that inhabited the shower/bathroom to a big wooden cube that framed out the shower. In the 2023+ you can fold up both the shower frame and the sofa and essentially create a big garage to haul bikes and large items. It's a great design and makes the trailer feel even roomier inside. I've always hated that most camper trailers dedicate so much space to a bathroom and Taxa was right to design it so you can put the toilet outside and fold the shower up and out of the way. My big issue with Taxa trailers right now are the windows. I really wish Taxa would figure out a way to make the accordion window screens seal around the edges. I have a 2022 Tigermoth and bugs can still just walk right around the edges of screens because they don't seal. It's not an issue during the day, or in low-bug areas, but try camping at a lake or a river during the night with the lights on inside your trailer, and you can clearly see what a huge issue it is. I counted 20 mosquitos inside my trailer at one point with the doors closed and all the screens up. It took me forever to figure out how they were getting in and it's the damned window screens. Just horrible. What you gain in convenience with those screens, you lose in effectiveness. I will say, it's more of an industry-wide issue rather than a Taxa issue because it seems like 70% of all the RVs out on the market use those same accordion windows. But Jesus, has no one thought to fix this design or at least find something better? I despise it when stuff doesn't work properly and those accordion screens are a BIG FAIL. For an offroad trailer company, you'd think they'd prioritize keeping bugs out of your habitat. The primary purpose of a window screen is to increase airflow and keep bugs out. It has two purposes and this design fails at one of them. If you buy a Taxa trailer and plan to camp in a place with a lot of bugs, be prepared to either just keep the windows shut (which SUCKS when it's hot) or plan on having to figure out some sort of modification to your windows.

You did a great job on your video. I have a 2018 Mantis. I absolutely love it! Like you everywhere I camp people ask for a peek inside. I also experienced minor leaks. I contacted Taxa and they covered the repairs. I found a RV shop in my area. Taxa sent info to them on how to make the repairs. (as there were no Taxa dealers in my area). So far no leaks. Before the repairs I tarped the top when it rained. I’m not full time, but I do get out often. Keep loving life in your Mantis. ( And contact Taxa about your leaks).

That's awesome to hear about your repairs! Could you tell us more about your experience? Approximately how long did it take for them to fix the leaks? It gives us a glimmer of hope.

The most time consuming part was finding someone near me willing to take the project. Taxa had to authorize the work and agree to the payment. Taxa shipped them all of the replacement parts and instructions, so there was some back and forth and lots of phone calls/emails, but in the end Taxa stood by their product. I advise you to contact them. Establish one adviser, so that you don’t have to repeat your problem to numerous people. Also write the dates and names of who you’re speaking to. It was a slow process, with a good outcome. Hope this is helpful.

We have a the same model and the exact same problems. It's a fun unit for our family, but definitely shouldn't have these problems with a price tag like we paid, I would be more lenient if it was a $15-20K sticker price. I've re-sealed canvas corners and rivets and added insulation strips to help with leaks. The biggest issue we have is the a/c keeping up with Texas heat. You would think being designed in Texas they could have figured this out and made it a priority in the design, but this is a great unit for elevation/cooler season camping. We just have to use additional fans and a portable ac unit to even consider using in Texas 50% of the year. I'm thinking about trying to figure out a way to insulate the walls/windows, a big hassle for the sticker price.

Thank you for the review. The tent/pop-up needs to be sprayed with "camp dry". Also keep the seals very clean. I hope that you resolve these issues. "Props" to you for having a Cattle dog. I love this breed ♡ Things like the door adjustment suck. All trailers have quality issues. Any off road is especially hard on RV's. If you want more bungee straps just drill a couple of holes in the face of the cabinet. I'm kinda disappointed that these things cost so much. Hope that you guys have many wonderful adventures 💖

Great real world authentic video. I looked at a new Mantis when there was still snow around and played with the pop up but noticed water inside on the counter! Should have been a red flag! We do alot of bush camping so I wonder if parking it adjacent a tree or two would help in stringing an overhead tarp (like a tent fly) to redirect rainwater away from the Mantis and keep things dry when it is cloudy. I wonder about the bathroom you didn't mention - and the Mantis is the only Taxa trailer with one. Was it private enough for you to use with/without the shower curtain? I too really like the design and the weight. Presently we have a 5500 pound airstream which is like hauling around a hotel room. I miss the ability to crash into the bush over mountainous rocky roads and park it anywhere. And storing the 8.5 foot wide airstream in the garage is an exercise in geometry and steady nerves every time since I have one inch clearance on either side of the garage door.

Really helpful review. Been looking at the Mantis for travel with a family of three, but the curtain bath/shower is a real turnoff. If they'd just offer a hard sided bath compartment, might consider it. That's where the basecamp 20x starts to win us over, as well as some new alternatives with better off road capabilities. Lack of an overland version probably takes this off the list as we plan to camp mainly on back country forest service roads out west. Thanks again for the review. Helps us avoid spending on something that won't meet our needs.

We should've clarified but our Mantis was in complete shade in that 85-90 degree weather. It was really humid too so that probably played a big role. We just don't believe the A/C unit is effective enough in hot temps although we haven't tested in dry heat. If we had to put a estimated number on it, it was probably only a few degrees cooler. 85 to 83 maybe? lol

Thank you guys for this video! You guys are awesome and I hope you keep on posting with all your travels. The leaking would be my biggest issue. Have you contacted TAXA regarding this? I would really like to see a follow up video that addresses this. This is a major problem. I didn't understand what you were saying regarding the AC unit. Are you saying that it can only be operated when the temp is above 85 degrees? Surely that can't be right. The sink / stove combo issue would be my problem too. I have already thought about asking TAXA (If I go with the Mantis) if they could custom that out of the rig. Or change it. Thank you again. Love watching you guys.
@DustTheNation4 жыл бұрын
We originally bought our Mantis in NC and there were no dealerships selling Taxas in MN at the time. It hasn't been until recently that MN dealerships are now selling Taxas so we might consider going in for an inspection (although Choua insists on fixing it ourselves). We'll see how that all plays out. Regarding the AC unit, it really isn't very functional at temperatures above 85 degrees as it's not powerful enough and struggles. As for the sink, newer models have been updated with a separate sink and stove so way less counter space. You have to sacrifice some to win some. Hope this clarifies any confusion!

How’s the bug situation with this type of trailer? Do you get critters frequenting the inside? If so any insights how they get in? Curious if they make their way in where the top roof tent attaches to the hard walls?
@DustTheNation3 жыл бұрын
The most frequent critters are flying insects but that's because of the windows or door being open. Small gnats seem to be able to get through the screen and sometimes mosquitoes too. Guessing they're able to get in from the sides of the window screens. We just started getting a few ants this year but not too many to be alarmed about and we get the occasional spider. Don't really believe they come in through the tent top unless there's a hole in the corner of the canvas connection which we tried covering with tape lol.
@jeffmurray10163 жыл бұрын
Ok great. Yeah it’s hard to keep them all out. Good to know with the screens. I think you also mention the screens don’t stay in place which is a problem. Have you shared that with Taxa? We haven't mentioned to Taxa about the screens but we also haven't really paid attention to how the newer model window screens compare to the older versions. We like the hatch on the 2021 Mantis and obviously, the separate stove/sink area. The chest fridge is most likely more efficient and convenient BUT it takes away the ample counterspace that we absolutely love in the 2019. We're not very fond of the floating shelves above the sink since it could make traveling with items in there difficult but they sure do look cool. The standing crate storage looks very neat and organized, although having crates on the ground would probably mean items stored there would get covered in debris easily. The trash can incorporated in the design would have been a big game changer for us since we live in our Mantis. We're still currently switching up where we put trash in the 2019 because there's simply not a good designated area. The wider ladder steps on the back of the Mantis are a nice upgrade for safer climbing and storing water jugs too. Oh, and how could we forget that the newer Mantis models don't have the metal, popup bar! Wish ours didn't have one because it's always in the way when the top is down. Lots of head bumping still to this day. 😆

First thing I saw this rig I thought, 'I wonder how bad it leaks?'. I was in the RV business for several years, and worked for someone that's LITERALLY been in the business since he was 14! He NEVER said, 'do you have any leaks?'. He ALWAYS said, 'where's it been wet(?)' and 'where did it leak?' That didn't give them much time to craft their LIE or just say 'NO'. I stopped watching when this AWESOME review team got to the terrible sink idea!

The horrendously excessive water leaks will end up causing severe interior damage as well as ceiling and wall structural damage, potentially also floor damage in the underlayment if it's made of wood. The company owes you a sealed, dry unit.

I wonder if the former NASA engineer that designed this was fired from NASA lol

Thank you. I want something attractive and in the ballpark of the cost of a Winnebago but the ROI is just not comparable. Ugly Winnebago it is.

The leaking problem is completely unacceptable, as is the door issue and a couple of other things, but the stove / sink combo and switch locations were there when you purchased it, as were many other complaints. You probably should have done some research and / or looked at it more before purchasing it.

We did extensive research before purchasing and still felt the Mantis was the right choice for us. Our "complaints" stated in this video are simply small changes that we wish to be different after living in it full time for over a year now and seeing what would work better for our lifestyle. Don't get us wrong. We still love our Mantis. Just putting things into a different perspective. Thanks for watching!

According to the Taxa group we are in, some have reported minor problems. I wouldn't be too worried about it though.

Yeah, ever since I first saw these Taxa trailers they just seem very cheaply made to me. Everything you guys are describing, the milk crates, carabeaners everywhere and the "kids beds" which are some very cheap looking hammocks in the cricket is crazy to me for the price they are asking. Like $30k for a Cricket is ridiculous and it doesn't even have a fridge.

Seriously the leaks are inexcusable. I can run a 30 year old $200 Toyota Tercel through a car wash 100 times and never get even the tiniest of leaks, and I'm supposed to spend $46,000 on a leaky trailer? Sheesh.

Hmm...very well done, for almost $50,000 I think I will pass (with all that leaking?).
