Very deliberate. Additionally, you can still see pill bottles in Travis' apartment even after he swears them off. Travis may like to think he's becoming this unstoppable counterforce to the environment around him, but the truth is New York has as much of a hold on him as it does on everyone else. Otherwise he wouldn't be going down this path. The city drives everyone in it to violence and sin, only they all embrace it. The difference with Travis is that he's been hiding away from it, and letting all those feelings of hate and spite for everything around fester in complete isolation, unable to seek love, help or support from anyone around him. And now its only a matter of time until he explodes, thus the constant ticking in the background. The adult theatre in this scene makes it clear too. Travis only feigns shielding his eyes, but he too can't resist the temptation of gazing into the abyss.

What’s freaky is how you can see Travis’ military training effect on his mindset. It allows him to be both super vigilant and highly organised, but also far more paranoid and at odds with the chaos of civilian life. At 3:09 Travis certainly knows what he’s doing. Cutting the X into the bullet is a rudimentary way of making a “Split Point”. The purpose? So the bullet expands and fragments upon impact, causing more severe injury. Travis is intentionally making sure that if he can land a shot, he aims to fully kill Palantine no matter what

This is the real definition of Neo-Noir, a voice-over narration, a protagonist of dubious morality who faces the dirt of the streets at night, Martin Scorsese knew how to capture very well the essence of New York at the 70s, I have always liked to see Robert De Niro and I think he is one of the best actors ever but I think he will never play a character of this caliber again, he was at his best as a method actor, seeing how he trained to look beefy it's very motivational to train but not to be like the character, remember this.

The unit patch Travis wears on his M-65 jacket is from Patrol "King Kong": it was a very real Marine unit in Vietnam consisting of about 20 Marines - 12 riflemen, a machine gun team, a medic, an artillery forward observer, a radioman and a patrol leader. They participated in bloody “hill fights” in 67'culminating in the siege of Khe Sanh. It explains the scar/wounds on this characters left shoulder and his battle training mindset.

He's a dangerous lunatic, like John Hinckley Jr. It's just that instead of following through with "saving" Betsy from Palantine and becoming a public enemy, he saves Iris from Sport and the Johns and becomes a public hero. Completely by accident by the way, since he only missed Palantine because his security spotted him and scared him off.

Paul Schrader called the writing of this movie therapeutic, since Travis is a man he was scared of becoming. I think there is something that reaches across time, nationallity and class, everywhere there are people in danger of becoming Travis Bickle. I myself find myself dangerously close to seeing the world like Travis does, as a sick place, and I can not think of a way to exist within it without losing my humanity and sinking into my own mental hell. This is what makes this movie so great to me, an examination of what might happen to someone who loses their mind in response to how their lives go, and just goes under without anyone noticing. In situations where I notice a sympathy for Travis besides pity and the vague relatability of his circumstances, I find it important to consciously make an effort to stay afloat, to not drown in self-loathing or hate. If you think you are becoming like him, please seek help. This movie is a fantastic character study of a man breaking apart and turning to violence, and it awakes an understanding of people like him/me/us. People who feel like they don't belong anywhere, aren't wanted, aren't contributing to anything. But I strongly believe that we can survive those times and keep strong, until live gets better again.

While watching a porno? That doesn't seem remote at all, in fact sex and violence correlate together positively, e.g. he wasn't able to get laid with the woman he wanted, thus sex taken out of equation and only violence remains. His desperate actions was not of purpose at all but just unexpressed hatred. Of course the source of true force is violence and only happens when someone is depraved enough. Take today for example and how majority of youth is being lied too, dumped down on, what happens when all humanity is gone in themselves? True Force, not for justice, but violence!

@@Arch3an pretty much, it makes the bullet much more likely to deform into several pieces on impact like a hollow point.

The thing he does with the bullet. Is he making them hollow points. So when the bullet impacts it shatters?

He is not making them hollow points but yes. The purpose is to make the rounds fragment.
@notsure9301

he is trying to make the bullet act in the way a hollow point would. hollow points are not designed to shatter in the body and produce shrapnel, of course they do that but it is not the intent of the design. the intent is to stop inside the body, and to deliver all of the kinetic energy that would have been lost if the bullet punches through. it is the forcing of the body to absorb all that extra kinetic energy that makes them more devistating, not the flakes of shrapnel that are a byproduct of the design

They arnt hallow points,but splitting the end of the lead makes the bullet butterfly out,leaving a bigger entrance wound and even bigger exit wound.if it exits
