This is only the beginning. The temporary tax break on some things and the $250 payment in April is the beginning of the vote buying. The payment in April will be 6 billion dollars added to the deficit and the debt since that money will be borrowed. Whatever the tax cut costs in lost revenue will also have to be borrowed and added to the debt. The last budget started with a 40 billion dollar deficit so they have now blown past that. There will be more spending coming as they try to buy votes going into the next election.

This is stupid. A general consumption tax is about as egalitarian as a tax gets, and is something that gives government a consistent cash flow. While I am happy to lower the GST there are a ton of special interest taxes that would need to be eliminated first. The artificially high taxes on carbon products being a good example. Gasoline does not need to be this expensive, it is simply excessive taxation that makes it so.

Short term fixes don't get at the root of the problem. This increases the national debt. The inflationary carbon tax must be removed and is at least partially responsible for the high cost of living. Also giving $250 to those who worked in 2023 is giving it to people who need it the least. We have tent camps of homeless people who have hit rock bottom and have been unable to secure employment. The use of food banks has increased dramatically as the carbon tax is set to go up in April. This appears to be a vote getting ploy with the thought that voters have a short memory.
